08/02/2003 -- Feels 100% fine
|
THE price one pays to meet his idol. Just ask 19-year-old Ngee Ann Polytechnic student Li Dahua.
He was one of five students who had dinner at Bobby Rubino's at Chimes with Hong Kong star Daniel Chan and MediaWorks stars Celest Chong and Adam Chen on Thursday night.
The stars are from the upcoming idol drama Feel 100%.
And for that honour, he was fired from his part-time job at convenience store 7-11.
'I called my supervisor up to say I couldn't make it, and he fired me,' said the mechanical engineering student from Hubei, China.
'I can do without the job. I don't need the money.'
But wisely, he added: 'It is always better have a job though.'
Channel U took Celest and Daniel to Nanyang and Ngee Ann polytechnics on Thursday to have their pick of dinner dates.
(Adam was filming action drama DSTA that morning and left the honour of picking a date to his co-stars.)
The dates were picked based on their words of admiration, an easy task for the students.
Mr Li insisted getting fired was worth it.
'I've been a Daniel fan since I was 15. It was worth it because I could have dinner with my idol.'
He added: 'Dong Dong (Daniel's nickname) talked about his old movies.
'And Celest was very friendly too - she even let me see her Nokia 8250. I wasn't impressed with the phone at first but I've changed my mind.'
And of the lady?
'Celest is so very pretty.'
Daniel, who appeared grumpy the entire afternoon, managed to lighten up.
Miss Shirley Chia, another Ngee Ann Polytechnic student, said: 'He is different up close. He cracks little jokes and is friendly.'
The 19-year-old accounting student also said Adam was great company.
'He was talking to the others about his secondary school days. I never imagined a star would talk about his school life.'
Miss Chia, Mr Li and the others were lucky. Not only did they meet stars, they had a free meal.
A group of Daniel's fans sat a few tables away, staring lovingly at his every move. In fact, they had been tailing him the entire day.
At 11am, about 20 members of his fan club Danieland - dressed in their trademark yellow jacket and blue T-shirt - mingled with 1,000 Nanyang Polytechnic students, standing out with their placards and posters (right).
Even when Daniel appeared in his navy leather jacket and dark glasses, looking tired and moody, the fans were excited.
A source revealed that, after a late night outing, Daniel woke up with stomachache.
At Ngee Ann Polytechnic, the fans were running around frantically just before his appearance, while about 400 students waited patiently.
Of course, they had to position the posters and banners so their idol would notice their presence. And he did.
Every time he had to pick a contestant, he would veer towards those with the matching jackets and T-shirts.
So here's a tip the next time you want to date a star: Dress in the uniform of his fan club.
In the end, it was a night of yummy food and great company.
(Although Daniel's buoyant mood petered out at the end of the night. After the obligatory round of photographs, he walked away briskly, as if happy that the ordeal was over.)
Still, for most, it felt like a real date - if you discount the lack of candlelight and champagne and include a television crew recording your every chew.
STAR-STUDDED DRAMA ABOUT DATING & LOVE
WHAT is Feel 100% all about?
Dubbed the Hong Kong version of the US hit sitcom Friends, Feel 100% follows a bunch of young singles and charts their trials and tribulations.
Meaning, they are all gorgeous, adorable and are never filmed working.
Their prime occupation seems to be hanging out at cafes to discuss their love lives.
And despite their single, bohemian lifestyle, they all live in huge, expensive-looking homes.
It started off as a 10-parter for the Internet but interest in the series grew to such levels that more episodes were added and it moved to TV.
Now, Feel 100% will be seen in places like China, Thailand and Taiwan.
The series stars Daniel Chan and Hong Kong national swimmer Alex Fong.
This star-studded idol drama also has famous faces like Miriam Yeung, William So and Shu Qi popping in occasionally.
MediaWorks stars Celest Chong, Adam Chen and Irin Gan are also featured in the series.
The show is already available on VCD and those who have seen it gave it the thumbs-up.
China student Wu Bo, 20, said: 'I like the show very much. Can't wait to watch it again.'
Feel 100% debuts over Channel U on Sunday, 10.30pm.
THEIR IDEAL PARTNERS
EVEN celebrities have fantasies about love.
Celest says she has yet to meet the ideal man. To her, that means 'someone whom I can love, and who can love me'.
Adam's ideal woman is 'independent'. He is rumoured to be dating MediaCorp actress Cynthia Koh.
'I need to be with a very strong person.' Daniel, of course, has a much-reported love life, the most publicised being his stormy relationship with Cecilia Chung. But he is hopeful.
He said: 'When I see my fans, I sometimes wonder if the right girl is there.' Daniel has had to deal with a stalker before. He said: 'That's not love. But I don't fear the stalker. I can protect myself.'
