Tip for the month of August. From Jon Magendie, Nicholls State Powerlifting, and USAPL Collegiate Committee Chairman This is not so much a tip as a note from me to you all. First off, congrats to the lifters at Men's Open. This years meet was the first one I've attended since the 1995 USPF's that Paul Fletcher hosted in Baton Rouge (remember, they used to have the IPF affiliation). It was well worth the trip. The lifting was great, even though the total number of lifters was considerably down from previous years. For those of you in the Collegiate ranks looking to move up, be forewarned: it moves even faster than Collegiates! These guys went from first squat to last dead in about two hours. You will hear more from me on this meet in the upcoming POWERLINES, out on August 15. Most of us will begin the new school year at the end of this month. Are you ready? Have you found a gym for your teams to train at, started hounding the SGA about handing over some funding, and picked your meets? Note the new date for Collegiate Nationals (April 12-14)! Mr. Johnny Graham ran into dificulties with the meet site (lifting will be at the Plaza Hotel, not the Abrams Center), so he had to change the date. As he is also hosting the Teen/Jrs, he moved that date too. Ladies, the date for Women's Nats has changed, too. It will be in Chicago, in February, making it hard to lift at both Collegiates and Women's. Speaking for myself, I am tremendously anxious about the upcoming year. Seeing the new members of my team get together for the first time, watching them all make the transition from the hectic lift every three weeks schedule of the high school season to the long training cycles necessary at this level...can't hardly wait. As the Collegiate Chairman, I've already gotten several inquiries from representatives of several schools asking about how to register as a team. This is great news! The rule change with regards to Team Scoring at Collegiate Nationals looks to be helping already. The more teams we have entered, the better! If you are interested in registering your team, you should contact the national office or your state chairman. I am also looking forward to the non-national meets coming up. Chances for the Rookies to test out the new training, lift in front of family and friends again. This should be a hell of a year. I'll list below the upcoming meets I know about, and if any of you have something to add, email me and I'll get it posted. October 13 La.
