SCIENCE TABLE
Add
valentine shake toy. They come in all the seasons.
Some have little hearts in them. Put
some wind-up
valentine toys and talk about what makes them move. Follow up with
a toddlers gear toy where they add pieces until another piece moves. Add
red and pink
color cans for sorting.
Stick a stalk of
celery in water. Add red food color and watch it
change.
Look at a piece of pink yarn
under the microscope.
ART/FINE MOTOR
Put
some pink paint in a tray. Cut out hearts from
sponges. Have kids dip and press on contruction paper. Cut a
potatoe
in half. Cut out a heart shape on the inside about 1/4" deep. Dip
in red, white or pink paint for potatoe prints.
Looks good on black! Use
pink things,
yarn, tissue paper, strips of cloth etc...to make a
poster. Trim in red and hang outside the door.
Glue those nifty
white packing materials that boxes are packed with to paper
plates. Cut
out just the
pictures from old valentines and have the kids glue
them to a folded piece of constuction paper for a
card.
Have the kids
mix red and white paint to make pink. Give
them the choice of small or large brushes each time they paint now.
Some will
be ready for the small.
Show kids how to
cut out hearts with folded paper. Your older ones
will love this.
CIRCLE TIME
Make
Pink Playdough. Let the kids mix, stir and pour. Read
Clifford the Big Red Dog. This an old book
but it never fails to grab the attention of of even the youngest child.
Use a piece of
red constuction paper. Have chalk and sissors ready
as you tell a story
of two kids going to Grandma's. They need a map so
you fold the paper. They start at home and go around a
large lake. (Make short strokes to resemble map trail in
shape of half a heart. Start at the top of the folded
side of the paper) All the way down to Grandma's.(Draw with
chalk while you talk) Start them on their trip while
cutting along the lines of the map.
When they get to Grandma's she opens the door (you
open the paper)and the kids see a big heart! Another
one of their favorites.
Use Pink Magic Box
to bring out many different shapes. Ask the kids to name
them but clap their hands when they see a heart.
Have many hearts cut out of Red and Pink, all the same size!
Have each child pick up two hearts. Ask whole class if they are
the same or different. Read
Love You Forever.
and if you can stand it read
Shel Silverstein 's The Giving Tree.
Makes me too teary eyed ever time
I do. It's one of the saddest sweetest books I've ever read in my life
and highly reccomend all adults read it.
It is a fine lesson on ageing. Make your own choice about
reading it to your children.
