History
in the making!
The
African Serval is the foundation for the savannah cat. There have been
documented, and more than likely undocumented breedings between the African
serval and domestic cats for many years. It has only been in the past few years
that myself and a few committed breeders have taken it one step further. This
truly is an exciting time for we the breeders as well as the lucky individuals
who will decide to make one of these incredible endearing and breathtakingly
beautiful cats their own.
The African serval has a very mild temperament for a wild cat making the
offspring of the domestic X serval a very reliably tempered cat. The African
serval has been kept as a pet here and abroad and has also been kept as a pet by
tribes in Africa .This I was not sure of so did my own research and yes they are
still kept as pets. This impressed me because this proves that the serval as a
specie has the potential for total domestication. Pongo has lived in my home
since 8 weeks of age and there was never a sweeter more gentle cat.
The process of producing Savannahs is no easy task. The breeding part of course
comes naturally, it is the actual fruition of kittens thereafter that is the
difficult part. I have had great success for the short time Pongo has been
breeding. The females used for the program were specially bred for gestation as
well as genetic compatibility. This took much research and time. I will say
after my first success I knew it was all worth it.
The Savannah females from the first generation are fertile making the task of
producing f2 kittens and further generations much easier. With it’s breathtaking
beauty and regal stature, the Savannah Cat truly is the new breed for the
Millennium.
