River steamers played an important role in Nashville commerce. Grain and building materials were mainstays of the river trade. Civil War Era Federal troops also relied on the river to recieve supplies while they occupied the city.

The Nashville Wharf

These pictures show the Riverfront Park area as it appeared in the 1800s and early 1900s. In the top photo note the Woodland Street Bridge in the distance, and behind that the Nashville Railroad Bridge. The Nashville Railroad Bridge was completed in 1859 and at the time had the longest spans in the nation, including a 700 ft center section that turned to allow tall ships to pass. This bridge is still in use today.
