Chapter 2

I came back from a delicious lunch with Mandy and Nick, and headed up to my motel room to get ready for the Broadway show that night. I passed many extravagant couples along the way and I wondered if any celebrities were staying there this weekend. I walked into my motel room and once again, I was amazed at how beautiful it was. I wish I could live in this luxury all the time. No, I'd probably get bored with it all. I like my dorm room too much. I walked over to the closet and took out the dress I was going to wear that night. It was lavender with silk material that cascaded all over it, and there was spaghetti straps with a little jacket to add to it. I had a pair of white scandals and realized I had brought matching butterfly clips with me.
I laid the dress down on the bed, and decided to turn on the television. I surfed to MTV and saw re-runs of the Real World and watched it for a while. Being from Canada, I had never actually watched MTV, but I loved it just as much as Muchmusic. About an hour later, I went into the shower and got ready for the night. I decided to walk down to the lobby early to see if anyone had gotten the same idea as well. There was nobody familiar down there, so I wondered around in my evening gown and checked out the beautiful restaurant and lounge area near the front desk. I admired the decor that covered the walls and my feet were definitely enjoying the carpet.
"Em!" said a familiar voice, and I turned around to see Brian and Leighanne.
Brian was wearing a smashing black tuxedo and Leighanne was in a basic black dress. They were absolutely adorable together.
"Hi! How are you?" I asked cheerfully. "You both look so nice."
"Thanks, so do you," Leighanne replied. "Is this your first Broadway show?"
"Of course!" I answered smiling. "I have never even been to New York. I love it so much already."
"We'll have to show you Central Park," Brian promised, and I nodded enthusiastically. "How about we get a drink?"
"Sure!" Leighanne responded, and we headed to the lounge. Brian ordered himself a beer, Leighanne a martini, and I settled with a Sprite. He brought them over and I thanked him.
"So, how's everything going with the tour?" I asked Brian.
"Pretty well," Brian answered. "How's school?"
"It's fine," I sighed heavily. "I kind of wish I didn't have to go."
"It's only four years Em," Leighanne reminded me, and I nodded reassuringly.
We watched as everyone else magically appeared. We greeted everyone, and all us ladies headed into a sleek black limo and the guys headed to a New York Yankees game. We arrived at the Metropolitan Opera House and I remembered this building from the MTV Video Music Awards I had just watched the month before.
"Is this the place where the MTV's Video Music Awards were?" I asked Amanda and she nodded.
"Yeah, isn't it amazing?" she replied, and I nodded with excitement. We walked through the doors, and were met along with a handful of other celebrities and press promoters. I realized it was the opening night of a new play called "Shady Shoes" and the opening night always featured many celebrities. I observed Susan Sarandon, a few of the New York Giants, and some other famous people that I couldn't quite remember what their names were. I looked to the left and I saw Britney standing there with a guy.
"Britney!" I called excitedly, and she turned around to see who was calling her. I saw a smile creep across her face when she realized it was me.
Britney and I had become pretty good friends over the summer on their tour.
"Hey Em!" she replied smiling. "How are you?"
"Good," I answered. "What about you?"
"Great," Britney smiled. "I'd better go. See you later." I nodded and headed back to Amanda, Leighanne, and Mandy. I was kind of disappointed that Britney never said anything more to me, but I realized the ways things were on the tour, was never going to be the same again. We walked into the theater and I ended up sitting near the back row with Amanda, and Leighanne and Mandy were sitting more to the front.
"Emilie, how's your love life?" Amanda asked me, as we sat down.
"Not exactly wonderful," I replied smiling. "Although, I do have a date tomorrow night."
"With who? Spill the beans girl!" Amanda encouraged me, and I smiled.
"With Joey Fatone," I replied, as a dreamy expression crossed my face.
Amanda's eyes lit up, as the curtain went up, and the lights dimmed. We watched the play from beginning to end, and I realized the play was pretty awesome. We walked out after the show, and caught the limo to the special convention center where they were auditioning the new talent.
I walked in to hear Mandy Moore singing her latest hit "Candy" and watched as these hot male dancers, danced around her. She was pretty good, for someone so young, and everyone in the audience seemed to be enjoying her performance. I followed Amanda towards the table where the guys sat, and she immediately headed to the dance floor with AJ. I sat down beside Howie, and saw everyone else was basically leaving the table to hit the dance floor.
Howie was asked to dance by one of the girls from Innosense, and I was at the table by myself. I looked across the dance floor and saw Joey sitting with JC by the bar and I decided to go innocently get a drink. I ordered a cranberry lemonade and headed over towards Joey and JC.
“Hello Boys,” I said innocently, and they turned to see me. I saw smiles creep across their faces.
“Em? When did you get here?” JC asked, and he gave me a gigantic hug.
“This afternoon,” I replied enthusiastically, and looked at Joey. He winked at me, and I felt butterflies enter my stomach. I couldn’t believe how gorgeous he is, so cute, so sweet, so wonderful.
“Hey Em,” Joey smiled, and he gave me a quick smile. Obviously, he hadn’t told any of the guys about our date the next night. “How are you?”
“I’m fabulous Joey,” I smiled, putting down my glass. “Want to dance?”
“Sure,” Joey answered, and we walked onto the dance floor as ‘Heartbreaker’ by Mariah Carey poured out of the speakers. “I hope you aren’t mad I never told any of the guys.”
“Why would I be mad?” I answered, beaming. My eyes were sparkling, and I knew Joey could tell.
“You look so good tonight,” Joey complimented me, and I felt my cheeks blush red.
“Thanks,” I whispered softly. “You don’t look too bad yourself.” Joey smiled, and he gave me a quick hug.
“How’s school going?” Joey asked, and I smiled.
“It’s okay, except my miss my family and friends a lot,” I admitted, as the song changed to Jessica Simpson’s “I Wanna Love You Forever”. I noticed LFO getting ready to perform on the stage.
“I can totally understand that,” Joey agreed, as we went to sit down at a booth to talk some more. “I hear people say that being a star makes life so easy, but actually, it’s pretty hard. I mean, I wouldn’t change what I do for anything in the world, but there are always consequences to good things.”
“Nick went through that too,” I told him, as I glanced across the room at him. Our eyes met and he smiled, as I smiled back. “He’s still my best friend though.”
“Emilie, I know Nick and you had a great relationship, and I am not intending on making you jump into something new,” Joey explained to me. “I am willing to do what you are comfortable with. I am not going to rush you. If you want to chill and be friends, that’s fine with me.”
“Joey, I have been thinking a lot lately,” I said thoughtfully, sitting back in the booth. “Nick will always hold a special place in my heart. We had so many cherished moments throughout our relationship, but all good things must come to an end. Nick and I did the right thing. It’s obvious he loves Mandy a lot, and I think she’s really great for him. I honestly do. We are over in the love department, but Nick will always be my best friend.”
“Damn girl, you should be a writer,” Joey winked at me, and I smiled.
“I’m just being honest,” I told him. “When you’re in love, there are so many emotions that you realize you have that you didn’t realize before.”
Joey nodded and I heard ‘Summer Girls’ begin on the speakers. I looked towards the stage and saw LFO creating a storm on the dance floor. I grabbed Joey’s hand and we headed towards the dance floor, and started dancing. This bought back memories to the many unsuccessful trips I had taken to dance clubs and tried to dance my heart out. Now, I’m a little better because Billie had told me all the right moves to do, and I started using some of them. I saw Joey watching me, and I smiled at him. I felt arms wrap around my waist, and I noticed it wasn’t Joey. I whirled around to face Justin, and I shrieked.
“Justin!” I cried, and gave him a big hug. “How are you?”
“Good,” Justin smiled, and he kissed my cheek. “I thought it was you, and then I realized it was.”
“It’s so good to see you again!” I told him, as Joey smiled at us.
“Same here Em,” Justin grinned. “How long are you in New York?”
“Until Sunday,” I answered, as ‘Summer Girls’ ended, and we headed back towards the BSB’s table. For some reason, Nick and AJ were sitting there alone. I sat down beside Nick and invited Justin and Joey to join us.
“Having fun?” Nick asked me, and I nodded with a smile. “You sure can dance now.”
“Billie’s a good teacher,” I responded, and he grinned.
“How about we go for a walk?” Nick suggested, and I said sure. I saw Joey looking at us worried, and I gave him a quick hug as reassurance. He smiled at me, and seemed to relax more.
“Wait, where’s Mandy?” I asked him.
“She’s dancing with some guy,” Nick told me, and I nodded. We walked out the doors, and into the downtown streets of New York. I felt the autumn breeze stream across my shoulders, and Nick offered me his suit jacket and I thanked him.
“How’s your night going?” I asked him, and he frowned.
“Not too good,” Nick admitted, as we strolled along the street. “Mandy and I aren’t getting along too well.”
“Oh, things will be better tomorrow,” I reassured him, and he shrugged.
“How is it so easy for you Em?” Nick asked me all of a sudden, and I stopped short.
“How is what so easy Nick?” I replied confused, and Nick sat down on a bench.
“How is it so easy for you to go on as if nothing happened between us?” Nick asked me, and I saw tears in his eyes.
“Oh Nick, I am not acting like that,” I told him, and I felt tears come to my eyes. “I’ll always cherish you in my heart.”
“Emilie, she doesn’t compare,” Nick looked at me. “I always compare Mandy to you, and I can’t stop it anymore. She doesn’t listen to me like you do. She doesn’t hug me all the time. She doesn’t reassure me I look okay. She isn’t you Em, and she never will be.”
“Nick, please, don’t do this,” I pleaded with him. “Mandy is better then me. You know that.”
“She is not,” Nick answered. “Em, I love you. I haven’t stopped. I need you in my life. You have to understand. My heart belongs to you and only you.”
“Nick, no,” I felt tears spill down my face. “I’m supposed to be going on a date with Joey. I can’t…I can’t do this. You can’t love me anymore. It’s not right. You have Mandy, and I have Joey. That’s the way it should be.”
Nick looked into my eyes, and we both knew we still loved each other with all our hearts.
“Em, I know you love me,” Nick told me, and I looked away. This wasn’t right, and I wasn’t going to give into my feelings. Nick couldn’t either. If we did, we were going to hurt Mandy and Joey, and I didn’t want to hurt two innocent people in the process.
“Nick! Hi!” Mandy shrieked, as she came out. “Em, why are you crying?”
“Oh, I have something in my eye,” I lied, and I could tell she wasn’t buying it.
“Sure, whatever,” she snapped, and she saw Nick’s tears too. “Oh Gawd. Don’t tell me. You two still love each other and are vowing your feelings for each other.”
“We aren’t Mandy,” I told her, and she looked unconvinced.
“Nick?” she asked him unexpectedly, and she avoided his eyes. “Nick!”
“What?” Nick replied softly, and Mandy sighed.
“Let’s go dance Nick,” Mandy insisted, and I stepped aside.
“I don’t want to Mandy,” Nick answered, and she groaned. “I hate dancing anyway.”
“Emilie, I can’t believe you!” Mandy shrieked at me, and I looked at her with surprised eyes. “Why are you trying to steal my boyfriend away? He’s MY boyfriend. Not yours.”
“I’m not trying to do anything!” I answered calmly. “I’m leaving.”
“Em wait-,” Nick said, and he grabbed my hand. “Don’t go.”
“Oh my gawd,” Mandy glared at me. “You are a bitch.”
“Mandy, calm down,” Nick snapped at her, and she glared at me once more.
“No Nick, I am leaving!” I snapped, and I turned away from them, as tears spilled down my eyes.
“Emilie, no!” Nick yelled, and he ran after me. “I screwed in the past, and I will not let you walk away from me, without saying you love me too.”
“Nick, Mandy is your girlfriend,” I felt tears spill down my cheeks. “Not me.”
“I knew it!” Mandy shrieked, stomping over to us. “You are a deceiving bitch Emilie. I can’t believe you came to New York to split Nick and I up, and get him back. Bull crap about the whole friends episode.”
“Why would I come all the way to New York to break you up?” I snapped. “Nick and I are over.”
“Oh quit the innocent routine!” Mandy shrieked. “You are so pathetic Emilie. You prance around the BSB’s as if your some saving angel, and all you are is a bitch. I’ve seen you with everyone.”
“I’m not a bitch,” I snapped at her. “That is one thing I am not. You have Nick Mandy, but you will not make me feel bad about myself.”
“What’s going on out here?” said AJ, as he walked out with Howie. “We got worried about where you all went.”
“AJ, did you know Emilie is scheming to get you away from Amanda?” Mandy suggested to him, and AJ considered the idea for a moment, and then burst out laughing.
“Yeah right,” AJ answered. “Emilie would never do that.”
“Maybe you should reconsider who Emilie really is,” Mandy offered the idea, and I felt more tears come to my eyes. This was unfair. I did love Nick, but I would never break someone up with their significant other. I couldn’t imagine Mandy thinking I was a horrible person, when I am not.
“Mandy, I don’t want to break you up,” I whispered, as tears spilt down my eyes. “Look into Nick’s eyes. He loves you very much.” I saw Nick’s hurt eyes meet mine, and I turned away.
“I don’t love Mandy,” Nick spoke up. “I love you Emilie.” He looked into my eyes, and I started to cry more. I turned and ran away, and I kept running. I ran until I was somewhere lost in New York City and collapsed on a nearby bench. I felt some snow come pouring down lightly in the sky, and I hailed a cab soon after. I headed back to the motel, reminiscing about the charter of events that had happened. This was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe Nick had said that. I was just starting to get over him, and now, he was declaring his love for me.
It was after midnight when I came into the lobby, and I saw AJ and Amanda waiting for someone in the lounge. I wondered if I could squeeze past them without noticing me, and it almost worked when a heavy set man appeared with his wife. I tried unsuccessfully to hide behind them, but Amanda noticed me right away, and I cringed.
“Emilie! Where have you been?” AJ yelled at me, when he noticed me near the elevator doors. They opened and all three of us stepped on.
“Out,” I answered softly, and I saw Amanda give AJ a Look.
“Em, are you okay?” Amanda asked me, and I shook my head. I felt tears come to my eyes, and she gave me a hug.
“Why did he have to say he loves me?” I sobbed, as we got off at our floor.
“Because he does,” Amanda replied, as AJ nodded in agreement. “Em, AJ and I are a prime example of a couple who broke up and got back together.”
“I don’t want to hurt Mandy and Joey though,” I told them.
“Emilie, why don’t you consider your feelings before everyone else’s for a change?” AJ suggested, and I shook my head. I unlocked my motel room and whispered good night to them. I collapsed on the bed, and fell asleep quickly…

I awoke the next morning to hear the phone ringing off the hook in my room. I groggily stretched and saw snow was whirling around, outside the beautiful view of my motel room window. I paused to enjoy it and temporarily forgot about the phone, until it blared again. I sighed and picked it up. “Hello?” I said groggily.
“Emilie! How come you didn’t tell me you were going to New York City?” screamed my mom, and I sighed. I remembered I had forgotten to call her.
“Sorry Mom, I forgot to call you,” I answered. “How did you know I was here?”
“I called Billie and she told me where you were,” Mom replied. “It’s not a problem honey. Just tell me when you go somewhere. Are you there with Nick?”
“Yes,” I replied. “Actually, all the guys are here.”
“Well, have fun hon,” Mom said, and she said goodbye. We hung up, and I leaped off the bed. I walked over to the window and watched the snow coming down more. I glanced down and saw a couple, laughing their hearts out. I wondered if my love life was ever going to be that easy. It used to be, but now it was one big mess. I took a quick shower and headed out the door to see where everyone was.
I knocked on AJ’s and Howie’s door and nobody answered. I found that strange, and I headed down to the lobby to get some breakfast. There was so many people staying in the motel for the weekend. I saw they were already decorating the lobby for Christmas and I grew excited. I love Christmas. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. I can’t wait until it gets closer.
I wondered where Nick was this very moment. I wondered how he was feeling from last night. I was confused beyond words, and I wasn’t ready to discuss my feelings for Nick or not. I didn’t know whether to still go on the date with Joey, or cancel it. One thing for sure was though, I was pissed off at Mandy for all the horrible things she had said about me last night.
“Emilie! Hey!” said a familiar voice, and I turned to see Howie, AJ, Kevin, and Brian eating breakfast, and there was an empty chair beside them.
“Hi guys,” I smiled, standing awkwardly by Kevin’s chair. “How are you all this morning?”
“Good,” AJ replied. “How are you?”
“I’m fine thanks,” I answered softly. “Well, I guess I’ll see you later.”
“Hey, wait,” Brian grabbed my hand. “Aren’t you going to eat with us?”
“Um…well…wouldn’t it be weird with Nick and all?” I answered softly, and I felt tears coming to my eyes once more.
“Oh Em,” AJ said, and he stood up, and gave me a big hug. “It’s okay.”
“No, it’s not,” I cried, as he made me sit down beside Howie. “I am so confused.”
“Want a coffee?” Kevin asked me, and I nodded slightly. He ordered from the waitress, and I reached for the napkin in front of me.
“What are you up to today?” Howie asked me, as I dried my eyes.
“I don’t know,” I replied. “How about you all?”
“We’re going shopping,” AJ replied, offering me a kind smile. “Amanda, LeighAnne, and Mandy took off shopping, so we decided to go shopping too.”
“Oh,” I said softly. I wondered if Mandy was still with Nick.
“Guys, I got some papers,” Nick said, as he came over to the table with three New York Times. I looked straight at him, and he realized I was there too. He avoided my eyes, and sat down at his chair.
“I have to go,” I commented, and I attempted to stand up.
“Fine, bye,” Nick snapped, and I looked at him with shocked eyes.
“Wait a minute, why are you mad at me?” I asked him, and I saw Nick look at me with a glassy stare.
“Think about it,” Nick replied haughtily. “Someone usually doesn’t run off when someone else says they love them.”
“Nick, you don’t even know how I feel,” I replied, as tears poured down my cheeks.
“Yes I do,” Nick answered, and I saw his eyes soften, but there was still a sharpness in his tone. “When you run away, it means everything is over.”
“Nick, that’s unfair,” AJ told him, and Nick shot him an angry glance.
“Don’t even go there AJ,” Nick snapped again. “Emilie knows exactly what’s going on.”
“Fine, Nick, you want to know the truth?” I screamed at him. “I love you! There, you have it! I love you with all my heart and I have missed you so much the last month. I don’t want to interfere with your relationship with Mandy, so I am letting you go. I figured you had moved on, but now you know. I love you Nick!” I saw his eyes pop open, and I turned and fled towards the front of the motel….

*Hello everyone. I have received some e-mails from people who are very upset because Emilie and Nick broke up. I apologize for this and I am listening to you. I am also so excited. I'm going to see the Backstreet Boys. The details are sketchy yet, so I'll let you know which concert!
Thanks a lot! Always, Emilie :)*
