Chapter 7

"This is getting really crazy!" Emilie commented to Billie, as they sat around the hospital room the next day. Emilie's surgery had been postponed until the next day because the surgeon had been called to perform a heart transplant right away. The guys had gone back to their motel to get some rest after Emilie and Billie had kicked them out.
"I know," Billie nodded, as she tossed the latest issue of Glamour aside. "Em, I really hope everything goes well."
"Billie, I am going to be just fine!" Emilie reminded her, as she sat up. "Stop worrying about me. It only causes you stress."
"Aren't you scared?" Billie wanted to know.
"A little, but I am trying my best to be hopeful," Emilie responded, as she turned on the television. "I am really focusing on the holidays and my new little sister right now."
"I bet you really want to see her," Billie said softly, as she glanced out the window, as the snow came down. "I never get to see my little stepsisters. My dad and stepmom moved to Indiana about three years ago and I haven't heard from them."
"I'm sorry Billie," Emilie put a reassuring hand on her arm. "You never know, one day you could see them again."
"I doubt it," Billie shook her head. "After my mom passed away, my father lost all contact with my sister and I."
"Are you going to your sister's for Christmas?" Emilie asked, hoping to take Billie's mind off her mother.
"Yes," Billie nodded, standing up. "I hate going there though. My sister's boyfriend is a real asshole."
"I'm sorry," Emilie apologized, as she saw stared hopelessly at Billie. "Why don't you come to my house for Christmas?"
"Yeah right Em," Billie laughed. "I'm sure your parents would love that."
"Billie, they would love you to come," Emilie reminded her. "Just because Clarissa is around now, doesn't mean that they don't any visitors for Christmas. Nick's going to come down for a few days as well. In their opinion, the more, the merrier."
"Really Em?" Billie's eyes sparkled. "That would be so wonderful. Being part of a real family at Christmas would be so great!"
"Billie, consider yourself my twin sister for a few days!" Emilie responded, and they gave each other a hug.
"So, your parents called her Clarissa huh?" Billie smiled, as she sat down in her chair once again. "That's a beautiful name!"
"I know," Emilie agreed. "It's so romantic. I bet she's so precious."
They heard the door open, and turned to see Brian, Nick, and Kevin standing at the door.
"Hello ladies," Brian said, as he came in with some sodas. "How are you doing now?"
"I thought I told you guys to stay at the motel!" Emilie told him. "You guys need your rest!"
"Em, we rested for six hours," Nick reminded her, as he came over and kissed her forehead. "We had plenty of rest!"
"You should stop worrying about me," Emilie replied smiling. "You are going to worry yourselves sick!"
"We already are sick!" AJ winked at her, as he came into the room with a few McDonalds bags.
"AJ! Em can't have that junk!" Billie told him. "You are so dense."
"Yes she can," AJ rolled his eyes, as he set the bags down. "She's not dying Billie."
"Not yet anyway," Emilie told them, and everyone grew silent.
"Em, that was not funny," Brian told her. "We are really worried about you."
"I'm sorry," she apologized, as she rolled over on her side. "I just wish you would all-"
"Wish us all what?" Kevin asked her softly.
"Leave me alone," Emilie answered, as tears came to her eyes. "It's too much. You guys are worrying too much about me. I am not worth it that much."
"We are not going through this again Emilie!" AJ told her sternly. "If you don't know how much we care about you, then you must be incredibly stupid!"
"AJ!" Nick looked shocked, but AJ shook his head.
"I am sick of Emilie saying all this crap!" AJ replied. "She says she's ugly, and she's beautiful. She says she's fat, and she's not. Em, you are sick, and I can't believe that you don't think we wouldn't want to be with you right now."
"AJ, I-," Emilie choked back tears. "I'm sorry."
"AJ, you are too harsh!" Brian snapped at him, as Nick wrapped an arm around Emilie.
"Well, someone has to tell her sooner or later Brian," AJ replied, and he walked out the door. Billie followed him, and she saw tears streaming down his face.
"AJ! Hun! Are you okay?" Billie asked him softly, as she placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Why would you care?" AJ snapped back coldly.
"AJ," Billie answered, looking taken back. "I'm sorry."
"Whatever," AJ replied, and he walked away from her. Billie watched him go, and walked back into the room. Kevin, Howie, and Brian looked worried, and Emilie was curled up in a ball, with tears streaming down her face. She saw Nick trying helplessly to comfort her, but she was rendering no response.
"Maybe we should go," Brian whispered to Kevin and Howie, and they nodded.
They walked out the door, as Billie followed them silently. Nick saw them leave, and took the cue to leave as well.
"What the Heck is going on?" Kevin asked them, as soon as Nick had shut the door.
"That was weird," Howie commented. "I have never seen AJ get that upset."
"Emilie is very emotional, and she never usually is," Billie observed, as they saw AJ walking back towards them.
"Why did you have to yell at her AJ?" Nick snapped at him angrily. "You've got her in tears."
"Because I did," AJ snapped back. "I hate her feeling as if she is nothing to anyone. She always put herself down, and every time we try to tell her she's wonderful, she never believes it."
"Well, that's still not a reason to-," Nick began, but Kevin silenced him.
"Look, no fighting guys," Kevin made them promise. "Em needs us now, and if anyone us get angry with each other, it will everything worse. I think she needs some time alone, so we should all let her alone for a while."
"Emilie hates to be alone," Nick whispered softly. "She's in denial."
"She's sick Nick," Brian reminded him. "She needs some rest."
"I know that," Nick told him.
"Maybe Nick is making her sick," AJ commented. "He was the one who caused all the stress in the first place. He said he didn't love her anymore."
"I did not!" Nick cried. "I love Emilie very much."
"Yeah right," AJ shook his head. "You love Mandy and you are too full of chicken shit to tell her."
"I don't love Mandy!" Nick argued.
"Yeah right," AJ shook his head. "You are one big pain in the ass Nick."
"Stay out of our relationship AJ," Nick threatened him. "Emilie loves me and that's it."
"She's too good for you Carter," AJ said, and he turned away. "I'm going back to the motel." AJ stopped when he heard the hospital room creep open, and they turned to see Emilie.
"Em, you should be in bed-," Brian tried to tell her, but she silenced him.
"No, I don't," Emilie snapped. "Look, why don't you all go home? I don't need any of you here. I am sick of you fighting constantly over me."
"Em," Howie said softly, but she tried to keep an angry face, but tears were coming to her eyes.
"I can't do this anymore," Emilie cried, and she fled back into the room.
Nick went to follow her, but Brian stopped him. He let Howie and Kevin go in to make sure everything was okay. "Nick, leave her be," Brian told him, and Nick shook his head.
"Em?" Howie asked her, as she sat down on her bed. "What's wrong?"
"Everything," Emilie answered, as Kevin handed her a tissue. "I hate AJ and Nick fighting about me all the time."
"Tell them sweetie," Howie encouraged her. "You can."
"I'm not strong enough too," Emilie whispered, as Howie gave her a hug.
"Emilie, you can," Kevin offered her a smile. "Just do it."
"Em? Can I come in?" Nick yelled through the door.
"Yes," Emilie cried, and Nick appeared, followed by AJ, Brian, and Billie.
"Listen to me now," Emilie instructed them. "AJ, stop saying Nick doesn't love me. He does! Why do you say that?"
"I hate seeing you hurting," AJ confessed. "Nick is always playing games with your heart."
"I am not," Nick whined, and Emilie glared at him.
"Yes AJ, Nick has made some crappy decisions in the last few months," Emilie admitted. "But we needed those instants to happen in order to help us grow more. I need Nick. I don't like when you put him down AJ!"
"Em, I'm sorry," AJ apologized, as he shook his head. "I have no business doing this."
"Don't worry AJ," Emilie replied softly, and he came over to give her a hug. "Thanks for caring about me so much."
"Not a problem," AJ answered, squeezing her hand. "I'm leaving now. Bye."
"AJ, wait!" Billie told him. "I'm coming with you."
"No thanks," AJ retorted, and he headed out the door. Emilie saw tears fill Billie's eyes.
"Why does he hate me so much?" Billie cried, as she felt tears stream down her face.
"It's okay Billie," Kevin told her, and her wrapped his arms around her.
"Em," Nick began, and Emilie turned to him. "I need to tell you something."
"Yes Nick?" Emilie offered him a smile, but she saw terror in his eyes.
"AJ's right," he began. "I love Mandy. I miss her. I can't pretend anymore. I can't lie to you anymore."
"What?" Emilie cried. "Are you serious Nick?"
"Yes," Nick nodded, as tears came to his eyes. "I only think of her Emilie. I was wrong to lead you on, but I love her."
"Nick, you don't even know her," Emilie cried, as tears streamed down her face. "She barely knows you!"
"Em, we've been together for six months," Nick replied quietly. "I met her six months ago and we've been e-mailing and calling each other. The reason I broke up with you was because of her."
"Get out!" Emilie spat at him. "I hate you."
"Em, I'm sorry," Nick apologized, as Brian looked at both of them with wide eyes. Billie was shaking her head, and Kevin and Howie were just shocked.
"Nick, just make up your mind and stick to the decision," Kevin coaxed him.
"I want to be with Mandy," Nick told Emilie. "I'm sorry."
"Fine," Emilie snapped. "Just get out and leave me alone!"
"I'm going," Nick snapped back, and he slammed the hospital door.
"That was a shock," Howie finally said. "Em, are you okay?"
"What do you think Howie?" Emilie snapped. "I am not okay! I have cancer, my boyfriend just broke up with me, and-and well, there is nothing else! Oh. Forget it. I'm sorry Howie. I guess I'll get over it."
"Em, we had no idea," Brian told her. "Don't worry."
"I have to worry Brian," Emilie replied, as tears came to her eyes....

******************************

"Emilie has what?" Mandy repeated as she lounged around Amanda's apartment.
Amanda was at the studio cutting her album, and Mandy was staying at her home for the night.
"Cancer," Nick repeated, as he spoke to her outside of the hospital. "I told her I still love you."
"Nice time to tell her Nick," Mandy acknowledged. "Maybe you should have waited."
"I had to do it Mandy," Nick concluded. "I feel bad, but she needs to know."
"She'll get over it," Mandy nodded. "But cancer? Not even Emilie deserves that!"
"Nick, who are you talking to Man?" AJ asked him, as he came outside with a Coke.
"You're talking to me now?" Nick asked shocked.
"Um yeah!" AJ responded, as he watched the snowflakes come down.
"I'm talking to Mandy," Nick answered slowly, waiting to see AJ's reaction.
"Your girlfriend is sick and you're talking to that skank?" AJ repeated. "How convenient!"
"Actually, my girlfriend is who I am talking to!" Nick responded. "I don't love Emilie anymore AJ."
"Nick, come on Man," AJ replied calmly. "You aren't this cold-hearted, are you?"
"Mandy, I have to go," Nick told the receiver. "I'll talk to you later. Bye."
"Nick, you can't do this anymore," AJ said, as they began walking along the sidewalk. "Emilie can't handle it anymore."
"I know AJ," Nick nodded, as he kicked the snow. "I am so confused. I see Emilie, and I feel so bad about everything's that has happened, but I don't feel anything when I am near her."
"Nick, just tell her," AJ concluded. "Emilie is awesome, and it really pisses me off when you hurt her over and over again."
"Why does it piss you off so much?" Nick wanted to know.
"Because, she's been so good to me," AJ answered finally. "She always listens to me. She's so caring Nick. She never judges me and she's always there for me and everyone else Nick."
"I know," Nick nodded slightly. "Emilie is a wonderful person."
"I just hate seeing her go through all this," AJ commented. "She is the last person on earth who deserves all this."
"AJ, I feel so bad about breaking up," Nick admitted, as they headed back to the hospital. "I just need to do what is honest."
"I know Nick," AJ patted his shoulder. "I have been in the same situation before. I'm sorry about always getting mad."
"I understand," Nick offered him a smile, as they walked through the hospital doors. They were met by Billie and Brian, who were obviously really upset.
"Oh no," Billie muttered to Brian. "I hope they aren't fighting or anything."
"We aren't fighting," AJ snapped at Billie.
"AJ, why do you hate me so much?" Billie asked him.
"I don't hate you," AJ answered. "I just think you treated me like crap when we first met."
"I'm sorry," Billie apologized, and AJ nodded. "Nick, what the Hell are you doing?"
"Billie, nothing," Nick answered, avoiding her eyes.
"My best friend is dying and you just sit there and make her feel so shitty!" Billie cried, as tears came to her eyes. "Emilie doesn't deserve this Nick. She loves you so much and you keep playing games with her! Why? Why her? Why now? Why did you have to get back with her last week? Why couldn't you have kept your feelings to yourself and let her go out with Joey? Why? Why Nick? Why are you hurting her?"
"Billie, you don't understand," Nick answered, as tears came to his eyes. "Emilie and I have nothing anymore."
"Nick, you'd better leave her alone!" Billie threatened. "Don't come back, asking to be with her again. I will kick your ass if you do!"
"Billie, calm down," Brian coaxed her. "Maybe we should all leave now. Emilie needs some rest and so do we."
"I'm going to see if Emilie's okay," AJ said. "Good night guys."
"Bye Bone," Brian told him, as Billie and him headed towards Billie's Toyota Paseo, with Nick following them. AJ heard Billie continuing to argue with Nick, and Brian was trying to calm her down. AJ passed Howie and Kevin on the way downstairs, and they said good night to one another. AJ went up to the elevator and paused at Emilie's door. He opened it, to reveal her holding the teddy bear Brian had given her earlier, with tears streaming down her face.
"Em?" AJ said softly, as he came into the room. "How are you now?"
"I'll be okay," Emilie answered, as she turned over to face him. "How are you?"
"Surviving," AJ offered her a smile. "I figured you might want to talk about it."
"Not really," Emilie admitted, as she looked out the window. "Where is he now?"
"He went back to the motel with Brian and Billie," AJ said, as he sat down in one of the chairs. "If it makes you feel better, Billie is majorly ragging him out."
"Good," Emilie nodded. "Oh AJ, I can't believe this happening."
"I can," AJ answered. "You see, Nick never got over Mandy. I could see it a mile away."
"Why didn't you tell me?" Emilie wanted to know.
"Because I didn't want to hurt you," AJ admitted. "Em, you can do so much better Hun. You are awesome. Any guy would want you!"
"It's not that easy AJ," Emilie commented, as she rolled her to face him fully. "I was so lucky to find Nick. He has supported me through everything. I even gained back forty pounds, and he stayed by me."
"Em, Nick was lucky to find you," AJ said softly. "He'll always remember what a great person you are."
"I'll always remember him as well," Emilie smiled. "We had a lot of great moments together."
"It's time to move on Em," AJ suggested. "It's going to be hard, but you have to go on."
"I know AJ," Emilie nodded. "I will move on eventually."
"You need to tell Nick you are ready to move on," AJ informed her, as he placed a hand on her shoulder. "It's the only way to make everything all right again."
"I can't tell him now," Emilie replied, as she sank down in her bed. "Nick will just have to wait for an explanation."
"Em, how are you feeling now?" AJ asked, trying to change the subject.
"I feel weak," Emilie admitted. "My body is not strong at all. I feel useless."
"Everything will be just fine after the surgery," AJ smiled. "You are one tough person."
"I can kick your butt anytime Bone," Emilie smiled back. "Just kidding. Oh geez. Aren't you going to go back to the motel?"
"I really don't want to," AJ said. "Nick and I are sharing a room, and I really don't want to see him right now."
"You can go stay in my dorm with Billie," Emilie winked, and AJ rolled his eyes.
"Billie and I together for a night? A war would break loose!" AJ joked, and Emilie laughed. "What's on TV?"
"Let's see," Emilie smiled, and she picked up the remote control beside her. She switched on the television to see AJ sitting with one of the Muchmusic DJ's, talking about their upcoming tour. The interview ended and on flashed a commercial for Backstreet Boys Day on Muchmusic.
"Hey, I never knew about this," AJ commented. "We should watch for a while."
"Okay," Emilie grinned, and they waited as on came another interview, but this time it was with Nick. "Look who it is."
"Hold on," AJ silenced her, as he turned up the volume.
"So, how long have you been with Emilie?" the VJ asked Nick on the TV.
"About nine months now," Nick smiled at the interviewer. "She's awesome. She's a really great person."
"How do the fans treat her?" the VJ wanted to know.
"I think they genuinely like Em," Nick said. "Emilie is really kind and caring towards the fans. She respects their love for me and the rest of the guys and is always willing to meet them. I'm grateful because I have found someone who understands my career and supports me throughout the whole process."
"She's sounds pretty great," the VJ commented, and Nick smiled.
"Turn it off AJ," Emilie pleaded with him, as tears came to her eyes. "I can't take it!"
"Em, it's okay," AJ comforted her, as he turned off the TV.
"Why can't he still feel that way about me?" Emilie cried, as tears came to her eyes. "Why does he have to break my heart constantly?"
"Em, people change, relationships break up," AJ explained. "Nick just fell out of love with you."
"How can you just stop caring about someone?" Emilie wanted to know.
"He still probably cares about you," AJ offered. "Just not in that way right now."
"You know what I am the most worried about AJ?" Emilie told him.
"What?" AJ replied.
"The fact that Nick won't care anymore," Emilie whispered. "The fact he'll go out with Mandy and not even care about me. I don't even care if he's my boyfriend. I still want him as a friend. I couldn't stand losing him."
"You have to tell him that Emilie," AJ told her. "Only you can tell Nick how you really feel."
"Should I call him?" Emilie asked, and AJ shrugged his shoulders. She picked up the phone by her bed, and dialed the motel's phone number. She asked for Nick's room and was connected after the front desk clerk questioned her agonizingly.
"Hello?" Nick groggled into the phone.
"Nick?" Emilie said softly.
"Mandy?" Nick responded. "I just talked to you baby. I need to get some sleep Hun."
"Nick, it's Emilie," she answered, trying not to become upset.
"Um hi," Nick said slowly. "Em, if you are calling to bitch at me, I don't want to hear it."
"Nick, I have to say something," Emilie ignored his tone. "Please."
"Fine," Nick answered carelessly. "Go on."
"Nick, I'm sorry about my reaction before about Mandy and you," Emilie began. "I'm sorry we didn't work out and I'm going to work on moving on. My only wish is that you be happy and if that means being with Mandy, then I support you."
"Em, it's okay," Nick became nicer. "You don't need to apologize."
"And also, I don't want to lose you Nick," Emilie whispered, as she began crying again. "You mean so much to me, and the thought of not being friends with you anymore is unbearable. I care about you a lot, as a friend, and I hope one day you can care about me too."
"Emilie, sweetie, I never said I didn't care about you," Nick replied, as tears came to his eyes. "I love you. I always will."
"I love you too," Emilie whispered. "I need you now Nick. I need you as a friend."
"I need you too," Nick said. "Want me to come over?"
"Yes," Emilie answered, as he hung up with her. Emilie fell asleep soon after, as AJ kissed her on the forehead, and left to go home to the motel.
Nick came later, and opened the door to reveal her sound asleep. He climbed onto the bed, and wrapped his arms around her, before falling asleep as well...

"I hope Emilie feels better today," Brian commented, as they headed up to the room.
"I hope so too," Howie agreed, as they stopped outside her room. They opened the door slowly, to reveal Nick and Emilie asleep on the hospital bed.
"What's going on?" Brian asked, shutting the door again. "I thought they broke up."
"Who knows," Howie sighed. "This is getting too complicated for me."
"Maybe we'll go get some coffee and come back," Brian suggested. "Kev's coming to the hospital soon, so will go meet him."
Meanwhile, Emilie shifted in her bed, and felt her hand hit someone on the head. Her eyes flew open to reveal Nick sleeping beside her. "Nick?" she cried, and she saw his eyes pop open.
"Yeah?" Nick replied, half asleep. "Hi."
"What are you doing here?" Emilie shrieked. "Why are you sleeping beside me?"
"You called me last night and said you needed me," Nick reminded her. "You were asleep when I came, and I was exhausted, so I just fell asleep here. I'm sorry."
"It's okay," Emilie reassured him. "I guess having you by me made me sleep so well."
"Same here," Nick smiled, and he gave her a hug. "This friends thing can work, right?"
"Yes it can," Emilie nodded, determined, as the door flew open.
"Carter, you never came home last night and I was worried sick," AJ snapped, as he came into the room. "How ya doin' Em?"
"Great AJ," Emilie laughed, as she saw the doctor appear.
"Em, we have some good news for you!" the doctor grinned. "It's very good news."
"What is it?" Emilie wanted to know.
"We were wary about this tumor for a while," the doctor began. "So, we delayed your surgery, and send it to five labs across North America and we've discovered it's not cancer after all. You just have an infection in your shoulder, and antibiotics can cure it fast. We are very sorry."
"Are you serious?" Emilie asked.
"Yes," the doctor nodded. "You can go home for Christmas now!"
"Yay!" Emilie shrieked, and she jumped off the bed. She threw her arms around AJ, as tears came to her eyes, and he squeezed her tight for about fifteen seconds.
"What's going on?" Kevin asked, appearing at the door.
"I'm not sick!" Emilie shrieked, as she hugged Kevin. "I just have a virus."
"Seriously?" Howie asked, and she nodded. Howie wrapped his arms around her again, and smiled. Brian gave her a hug next, and she paused at Nick.
She smiled at him, and he reached forward to wrap his arms around her.
"This is going to be a great Christmas after all!" Emilie winked, and everyone cheered....
