Syquia talks... (from News page 1)

Eric then scribbled a message on a small sheet of paper. According to the documentary, the message was disturbing – garbled words about darkness and the Devil.

Ka Imam advised Elena to go with Eric to church for three days. “Make sure that your prayer comes from your heart,” Ka Imam added.

After two days, Elena and Eric went back to Ka Imam. The exorcist placed two feathers again between Eric’s toes and found nothing wrong. Ka Imam believes that “the powerful combination of the earlier exorcism and Elena’s prayers have vanquished the evil spirit.

“They won’t come back. It’s over,” Ka Imam said, to Elena’s relief.

But to be sure, Elena also sought the help of a priest named Fr. Rick, who has performed nine exorcisms sanctioned by the Catholic Church. Fr. Ric was skeptical whether Eric had been possessed. He was thinking that Eric was suffering from psychological trauma. Eric’s father died several months ago, but the boy only learned about it three months later. The attacks started at around that time. According to the documentary, Fr. Ric thinks “the exorcism has made the attacks worse, convincing Eric that the spirit was to blame.

Syquia said that in the Office of Exorcism, there they determine if a person is possessed through four ways: (1) the person should have come from a psychiatrist already; (2) the surrounding events in the time frame of the attack are looked at; (3) the psychiatric manifestations are looked at. This involves seeing what diagnosis has been done by the psychiatrist; and (4) the para-psychological phenomena, such as performing acrobatic feats and aversion of the sacred, are observed.

Syquia said many Filipinos have contacts with the spirit world.

“As a country, we are very open to the spiritual world. We are at their mercy. They can appear in any form they want. We just accept the form,” Syquia said.

That is why, he added, we must be critical and consider what the Catholic Church says about the paranormal and the occult.

However, in the case of Ka Imam being a former Catholic, the Church disproves of his work because he is not a priest and yet he exorcises. Nevertheless, according to the documentary sourced from the National Geographic, he will still continue with his work free of charge in order to help people.
