FELICITY: (voiceover to Sally) "Dear Sally, So there we were, Ben and I, at the
Trocadero waiting for the night to open itself to us. Did you ever have those nights or even days where you sensed something huge was going to happen, but you didn't know what, so all you could do was wait."
At the Trocadero there is a long line in front of the small venue. Most of the people range from twelve year olds to people in their mid twenties. There are patches of smoke emitting from the mouths of people here and there.
BEN: "We finally made it."
FELICITY: "Yeah, we're here."
TEENAGE GIRL: "I thought this gig opened at 8:00?"
FELICITY: (looks at watch) "It's 8:15 already."
BEN FROWNS AND LOOKS AROUND.
BEN: "These things usually start a little late. (points) Hey look! That dude is climbing up the flagpole."
FELICITY TURNS TO THE PARKING LOT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET AND STARTS LAUGHING.
FELICITY: "You'll do strange things to keep yourself entertained."
AFTER 20 MINUTES . . .
BEN: "Speaking of keeping yourself entertained. . . ."
SOME GUYS CLAP AND CHEER AS A WOMAN IN A PASSING LIMO LIFTS HER
SHIRT AND FLASHES EVERYONE THROUGH THE SUN ROOF.
When Ben and Felicity finally get into the club. It is packed with people in the lobby. Off to the side it steps up to an area where band shirts are displayed on a wall for sale. Some of the teenagers are already wearing the concert shirts they have just bought. Past this you can see stairs against the wall leading two the second floor.
BEN: "That must be where they're serving drinks."
FELICITY: "Yeah. (looks around) Adia must be with Story backstage now."
BEN: "She never told us the name of their band."
FELICITY: "Judging from all the T-shirts people are wearing I'd say they're called
EmPeRiAL HoZtS."
BEN: "Thanks Sherlock."
FELICITY: "Come on let's go see the stage."
Ben and Felicity enter an area with rows of columns surrounding a grounded floor. Already kids were there talking in bunches throughout the open area. There were no chairs so if someone got tired they sat on the floor. Towards the back was a mini bar that sold soda and junkfood.
FELICITY: "I've never really been to concerts in small venues like this when I was
young. I was usually off at someone's house or a mall somewhere. Sometimes we'd go to a club or a camping trip, but . . ."
FLASHBACK: FELICITY AND ADIA OUTSIDE THE MALL IN FRONT OF THE
MOVIE THEATER.
FELICITY: "Ben looked at me in Study Hall and smiled at me!"
ADIA: "Really! Ooohhh! He's not goin wit that Tiffany girl, anymore. They broke up again!"
FELICITY: "I don't get those two."
ADIA: "They're popular and out of our league."
FELICITY: "Don't you think they'll be a point in our lives when we won't be judged by whether or not in the 'in crowd.'"
ADIA: "Just wait till college. It'll be different."
FELICITY: "We can go to San Francisco and hang out at those coffee shops and jazz clubs."
ADIA: (laughs) "I've always wanted to read in front of an audience. I even practice in my room in front of the mirror sometimes. (blushes) I always feel their eyes judging me saying you suck. Thumbs down for this chick."
FELICITY: "I know it makes you feel so self-conscious. I hate it when you're face turns red."
ADIA: "I know."
ADIA SNEAKS A LOOK AT A GROUP OF GUYS ACROSS FROM THEM WHO
ARE SMOKING. ONE OF THE GUYS WINKS AT HER AND SHE SHYLY LOOKS
AWAY. HIS FRIEND LAUGHS AND PUNCHES HIM IN THE ARM.
ADIA: "Those guys over there are looking at us."
FELICITY: (looks around) "Where?"
ADIA: "Don't look! It'll seem obvious."
FELICITY: "Too late. Two of them are coming over right now."
ADIA SQUEALS
BOY #1: "Hey, going to see a movie?"
FELICITY: "Yeah we're going to see Dazed and Confused"
BOY #1: "Hey, us too. That's cool. (hesitates) Wanna hang wit us before the movie starts?"
ADIA: (quietly) "Sure."
BOY #2: (to Adia) "I'm Ethan."
ADIA: "Amber."
FELICITY TURNS SHARPLY AT THIS, BUT ADIA GIVES HER A WARNING LOOK.
BOY#2: "Cool name," he sincerely comments.
BOY#1: (to Felicity) "What's your name."
FELICITY: "Felicity."
BOY#1: "That means happiness, right?"
FELICITY (surprised) "Yeah, usually people don't guess what it means they just say nice name."
THE FOUR OF THEM JOIN A GROUP OF GUYS MOMENTS LATER. AFTERWARDS THEY ENTER THE THEATER. BEN IS WITH A GROUP OF HIS FRIENDS IN THE BACK ROW.
CHRIS: "Hey man, don't be bummed cause that chick's easy."
BEN PUNCHES CHRIS IN THE ARM.
CHRIS: (winces) "Don't blame me cause I said the truth."
BRUCE: "Yeah! With a body like that."
MARK ROLLS HIS EYES AT THIS.
BEN: (sighs) "I'm tired of these high maintenance chicks. They're all the same."
BEN LOOKS AROUND AND NOTICES FELICITY AMONGST THE GROUP OF
GRUNGY GUYS.
BEN: "Is that Felicity?"
BEN'S FRIENDS TURN TO LOOK IN THE DIRECTION HE'S POINTING AT.
CHRIS: "Yeah, those guys don't know any better."
BRUCE: "She's a brain and so's her dork friend Adia."
BEN: (gives both of them dirty looks) "They're cool just . . . quiet."
BEN CONTINUES TO LOOK IN THEIR DIRECTION. FELICITY AND ADIA HAD
JUST LAUGHED AT SOMETHING ETHAN SAID. BEN COULDN'T HELP BUT
FEEL A SMALL TWINGE WHEN HE SAW THE WAY FELICITY'S FACE LIT UP.
MARK: "Maybe those guys know something about them that we don't."
BEN: "Felicity?"
FELICITY SHAKES HER HEAD FROM HER REVERIE.
FELICITY: "Hmm?"
BEN SHAKES HIS HEAD IN AMUSEMENT.
BEN: "I've been trying to get your attention. Let's go upstairs."
FELICITY: "Upstairs?"
BEN: "Yeah, the balcony. It's for the older crowd."
FELICITY: "Okay."
Ben and Felicity walk hand in hand up to the balcony. The opening act plays to a few boos from the audience impatient from all the waiting for the opening act to come. An hour later EmPeRiAL HoZtS comes on. Story comes on wearing the same clothes he had on before. Except it looks like he is wearing eyeliner and nail polish. They rip into a fast paced song that quickly sends the crowd below to form a mosh pit.
ADIA: "Hey you guys made it!"
BOTH BEN AND FELICITY TURN AROUND.
FELICITY: "Hey, Amber!"
ADIA: "I can't believe you remembered that."
FELICITY: "You also couldn't believe it when Ethan asked you out."
ADIA: "Yeah."
FELICITY: "That boy didn't stand a chance. He fell for you big time."
ADIA: (gives a small reminiscent smile) "He was my first boyfriend."
FELICITY: "It was so cute the way his hair fell over his eyes."
BEN: "Wait, are you talking about those guys like slacker dudes in flannel?"
FELICITY AND ADIA: (in unison) "Yeah."
BEN: "I saw you guys together at the movies when Dazed and Confused came out."
FELICITY: "You did? I didn't even notice you were there."
ADIA: "Yes you did."
FELICITY PUTS A FINGER TO HER LIPS.
FELICITY: "Sshhush."
BEN SMILES AT THIS AND GOES TO GET A DRINK. THE TWO GIRLS BARELY
NOTICE HIM LEAVE AS THEY CONTINUE TO REMINISCE
ELENA IS ABOUT TO GO OUT THE DOOR WITH HER SUITCASE, BUT DR.
MCGRATH COMES RUSHING TO THE FRONT DOOR. HE PUTS A HAND ON
THE KNOB.
DR. MCGRATH: "You can't go."
ELENA'S EYES BLAZE.
ELENA: "Why not? Give me one excuse why I shouldn't leave a relationship that was doomed from the very beginning because: number one you have a wife, and number two you have kids."
DR. MCGRATH ROUGHLY GRABS ELENA FOR A KISS. FOR A SECOND SHE
PULLS AWAY.
ELENA: "Wrong answer."
ELENA TURNS AND MOVES PAST THE OPEN FRONT DOOR. SHE WALKS
BRISKLY TO THE SIDEWALK. ELENA IS WILLING HERSELF NOT CRY TO
SAVE SOME OF HER DIGNITY.
DR. MCGRATH: (outloud) "My wife just died."
ELENA STOPS IN HER TRACKS AND TURNS TOWARDS HIM.
ELENA: "What did you just say?"
ADIA'S "CIRCLE" PLAYS IN THE BACKGROUND
"Oh my brother my sister my mother
you're loosing your identity
can't you see that it's you in the window
shining with intensity
What kind of love is this that keeps me
hanging on
despite everything it's doing to me
what is this love that keeps me coming
back for more
when it will only end in misery... "
MOMENTS LATER IN THE BALCONY. FELICITY LOOKS OVER TO BEN WHO
IS HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH BARTENDER.
FELICITY: "Hey, I've got to go the bathroom. I'll be right back."
ADIA: "OKAY."
FELICITY LEAVES AND SAYS HI TO BEN ON THE WAY. BEN SEES THAT ADIA IS LEFT ALONE AND GOES TO JOIN HER."
BEN: "Hey."
ADIA LOOKS UP AT HIM AND SMILES.
ADIA: "Hey, so how do you like the show so far?"
BEN SURVEYS THE SCENE BELOW AS EMPERIAL HOZTS PLAYS THROUGH A
NUMBER
BEN: "They're pretty good. (looks directly into Adia's eyes) How'd you meet Story?"
ADIA: "The coffee shop we're goin to I used to work there. I met him when his band had a regular gig. He was performing up on stage and this energy just vibrated off him. I knew the drummer because he hangs with my brother."
BEN: "Matt, right? We played basketball a couple of times."
ADIA: "Yeah, that's actually how the band got the gig, since I got them set up with the audition. Afterwards, when they got it Story came up and thanked me. He asked me out as a show of his thanks."
ADIA LOOKS AT STORY FONDLY.
ADIA: "We've been the best of friends ever since."
BEN: "No romantic possibilities?"
ADIA: (shakes her head) "I don't know. I know I can't imagine him out of my life. He's my other half, but we've never gone in that direction."
BEN NODS AT THIS. ADIA STEPS CLOSER TO BEN.
ADIA: "I know Felicity and the way she looks at you."
BEN: "Yeah, it makes me nervous because it's like everything she goes after also has to have this big cosmic meaning to it. It scares me a little cause I never found anyone else so desperate for meaning in their life."
ADIA: "It's easier to take the initiative when you've got a reason to back it up."
BEN: "Yeah, I guess you're right."
ADIA: "Of course I am."
BEN: "Do you want a drink?"
ADIA: "Sure."
BEN AND ADIA GET THEIR DRINKS AND ARE LATER JOINED BY FELICITY.
FELICITY: "You guys seem to be getting along."
BEN HAS HIS ARM AROUND ADIA. FELICITY TAKES NOTE OF THIS AS ADIA
SEES HER REACTION.
BEN: "Yeah we're cool, now."
ADIA: "Come join us."
ADIA TAKES FELICITY'S HAND AND SITS HER DOWN WITH THEM. ADIA IS
TO BEN'S LEFT AND FELICITY IS TO BEN'S RIGHT, HIS ARMS ARE AROUND
BOTH OF THEIR SHOULDERS.
BEN: (with a smile that includes the both of them) "I'm so lucky to have two of the most beautiful girls in the concert."
NOEL: "We should look around at some tourist spots during the week.
JULIE: "I don't know that much about Germany."
NOEL: "We can get some travel brochures or just walk around and see what happens.
JULIE: (raises an eyebrow) "Spontaneity coming from you?"
NOEL: "Ah, well."
JULIE (smiles) "Yeah, let's do it tomorrow."
JULIE AND NOEL SIT ON A FOUNTAIN WATCHING THE SKY AS THE SUN
SETS IN BETWEEN THE OLD MEDIEVAL STYLE BUILDINGS. NOEL LOOKS
AT JULIE AND SMILES BACK.
NOEL: "I'm glad you came to Germany."
JULIE: "Me too."
TOM PETTY'S "LONESOME SUNDOWN" PLAYS I N THE BACKGROUND.
"Redemption comes
To those who wait
Forgiveness is the key
And I wish you love
And I wish you hope
Please believe in me
And it's a lonesome sundown, this is gonna be hard
Yeah a lonesome sundown, this is gonna be hard
I know
So don't let go this is gonna be hard"
The audience applauses after another head bangin' song. Story is telling the audience to
quiet down, but some people proceed to scream.
STORY: "SHUT UP!"
THE NOISE LEVEL DIES DOWN A BIT
STORY: "Okay, the next two songs are new. I wrote them over dinner so if we mess up . . . (big high pitched scream) Be QUIET! The first is called 'Romeo's Envy' Double Savior Intro that leads to a ballad called 'Juliet's Rose'. This is for my Juliet. (points to the balcony where a shocked Adia stands) Adia I love you."
THEY QUICKLY CANNONBALL INTO THE SONG THAT JUMPS OFF THE SPEAKERS. BOTH BEN AND FELICITY TURN IN AWESTRUCK AT A STILL
SHOCKED ADIA WHOSE MOUTH IS HANGING OPEN.
STORY: "I had dinner with you this night. Inside a garden of four walls. The roses they grew from hell. Where their roots were born. I, forgotten love stricken man. A banished angel. Taught them how to climb from Satan's fire. Past the earth's core. We're safe in these four garden walls. We're safe. I have you in my arms. Where we are saved. Angel's didn't see the greater part of day. The hours they disappeared in your eyes. Their halos broken. Their voices fade. You took God's melody. We're safe in these four garden walls. We're safe. I have you in my arms. Where we are saved. Romeo envied me. Because I feel for you. More than he ever did. Because we're not star crossed lovers. We're not star struck lovers. Juliet. I have you in my arms. I have you in my arms. We're safe in these four garden walls. Where we are saved."
THE GUITAR SOLO PLAYS REALLY FAST AND THEN REPEATS ITSELF UNTIL
IT SLOWS DOWN AND LEADS INTO "JULIET'S ROSE."
STORY: "Okay people, get ready with your lighter's!"
"Juliet's Rose"
"You know
You're the thorn on Juliet's side
Romeo never felt the way I did
Romeo's Envy
He never felt the way I did
He never had time to feel this careless and free
You're Romeo's Envy
Don't you know
Romeo envies me
He took a rose
from Juliet's wedding bouquet
and it filtered past
cumulonimbus clouds
and magarine rays
to you
These garden walls
will keep us safe
I never knew a person could
be so lucky
lucky enough to have Romeo
envy
Because when I look into
your eyes in these four
garden walls
I know
That we've been saved
We're not a pair of star-crossed lovers
We're saved"
ADIA LOOKS AT THE VERGE OF TEARS. SHE QUICKLY GOES OFF THE
BALCONY AREA AND FEW MOMENTS LATER WE SEE HER ON THE STAGE
WITH STORY KISSING. THERE ARE A LOT OF AWWS AND CAT CALLS FROM
THE AUDIENCE. BEN AND FELICITY LOOK AT THE PAIR AND SMILE.
FELICITY: "I love happy endings."
BEN: "Me too."
ELENA IS LOOKING AT DR. MCGRATH WHO IS STANDING FRAMED INSIDE
THE FRONT DOOR. SHE MUST HAVE BEEN A HUNDRED YARDS AWAY
FROM HIM, BUT EVERY MINUTE SHE STANDS IT FEELS LIKE HE WAS
DRAWING HER IN WITH HIS EYES. ELENA HATED THE POWER HE HAD
OVER HER.
DR. MCGRATH: "My wife just died." He let the sentence hang like a gift in the air.
ELENA: "I'm sorry."
DR. MCGRATH: "The funeral's next week. I have to start making plans as soon as I get back. But being with you it makes me forget, somehow. I know it's mean, but you're the only one that makes me feel better. Better than any type of medication."
ELENA GASPS IN SHORT QUICK BREATHS.
ELENA: "When are you going back?"
DR. MCGRATH: "Sunday. We have two whole days. We can stay here and pretend we're the only two people left in the world."
ELENA: "I gave up on fairytales a long time ago. They always come to an unrealistic ending . . . but they all come to an end."
DR. MCGRATH: "Don't you think I don't know about endings. I'm trying deal with one right now . . . I need you, please."
ELENA: "You're not dealing with anything. You're running away."
ELENA PURSES IN HER LIPS. DR. MCGRATH COMES WALKING UP TO HER.
HE HOLDS ONTO HER HAND SHE RESISTS AT FIRST, BUT HE HOLDS ON
DESPITE HER STUBBORN ATTEMPTS.
DR. MCGRATH: "Just because one thing is ending it doesn't mean you have to close all the doors. (pauses, and closes his eyes) My wife and I talked a while ago and she doesn't want me to live my life alone and pinning for her. I know I'll never find anyone like her again. I feel that way about you too. She'll always be a part of me, but the both of us have already gotten used to the idea that we won't be around long. All I'm saying is, I need you. Just you. If you leave we're going to end up very lonely without each other. Please stay here with me."
ELENA TAKES A DEEP BREATH AND TAKES HIS HAND. THEIR FINGERS
CLASP AND HOLD TIGHTLY TO EACH OTHER.
ELENA: "You have to go back there alone. You need time to yourself to figure things out. You can't depend solely on others to help save you. I'll wait for you. I'll wait for you when you do come around."
LENNY KRAVITZ'S "CAN'T GET YOU OFF MY MIND" PLAYS IN THE
BACKGROUND.
"I don't wanna lose you baby
And I don't wanna be alone
Don't wanna live my days without you
But for now I've got to be without you
I've got a pocket full of money
And pocket full of keys that have no bounds
But then I think of lovin'
And I just can't get you off of my mind
Babe can't you see
That this is killing me
I don't want to push you baby
And I don't want you to be told
It's just that I can't breathe without you
Feel like I'm gonna lose control
I've got a pocket full of money oh yes I do
And a pocket full of keys that have no bounds
But when it comes to lovin'
I just can't get you off of my mind"
FELICITY, BEN, ADIA, AND STORY WALK AS A GROUP TOWARDS THE BLUE
MOON CAFE. BEN AND FELICITY ARE HOLDING HANDS WHILE ADIA AND
STORY ARE WALKING WITH THEIR ARMS AROUND EACH OTHER.
STORY: "I never knew you gals worked together on a school play."
ADIA: "Why so surprised."
STORY: (nuzzles nose to nose with Adia) "Because from what you've told me both of you don't seem like the type to perform in front of an audience before."
BEN: "They weren't."
FELICITY: (playfully punches Ben) "Oh we were on the costume crew. We kept
threatening to quit."
ADIA: "It was a thankless, thankless job."
STORY: "It usually is."
FELICITY: (to Adia) "Remember that time we had to take Sam's cowboy shoes off and we were both on the floor struggling."
ADIA: (laughing) "Yeah, you had one shoe and I had the other. I felt sorry for the girls, and the guys everytime Edwin was around during the changes."
STORY: "Why?"
BEN: "He's this really weird guy in school who runs around with a tool belt."
FELICITY: "Plus, when we put him with the guys during changes he'd just sit there and stare, and the girls were out of the question. The construction crew didn't want him either."
STORY: "Ouch."
FELICITY: (laughs) "I remember the time he was walking with a ladder and he conked out Adia when he turned around and it hit her on the head."
BEN: "I heard about that."
ADIA: "I literally saw stars in my eyes."
STORY: (kisses Adia's head) "Aw too bad I wasn't there."
ADIA: "Yeah to see me in all my glory with a bump the size of Mount Everest."
ADIA PRETENDS TO FAINT AND THEY ALL LAUGH AS THEY ENTER THE
BLUE MOON CAFE. BEN, FELICITY, AND STORY TAKE THEIR SEATS. ADIA
DISAPPEARS BACKSTAGE AND AFTER AWHILE THEY SEE HER ON STAGE.
SHE MOVES AROUND THE STAGE WITH A CONFIDENCE FELICITY NEVER
SAW FROM HER BEFORE AND HER VOICE IS FILLED WITH EMOTION.
ADIA: "Hey this piece is from Jeff Buckley I thought it held a lot of truth on what you
should be getting out of life admist all misery."
In order to live my ideal life.

THERE IS A LOUD APPLAUSE AS ADIA TAKES HER BOW. STORY WHISTLES
AND SHE BLUSHES FAINTLY.
ADIA: "Aw thanks people. I'd like to say hi to my friend's Felicity and Ben and my
'Romeo' Story over there. Thanks for letting me believe in fairytales again."
FELICITY: (voiceover to Sally) It was a beautiful seeing Adia so happy. I wondered if I've ever looked that happy with Ben, Noel, or maybe even Eli. The way Adia's eyes sparkled at Story I thought I was going to melt."
THE FOUR OF THE ARE NOW GOING OUT OF THE CLUB. STORY WALKS AHEAD OF THEM. HE IS WALKING BACKWARDS, FACING THEM AS THEY
CROSS THE STREET.
STORY: (smiles to Felicity and Ben) "You seem to bring me luck ever since both of you came here."
BEN: "Naw man, it's all you. You were cool on stage. You and Adia both have stage presence."
STORY: "Thanks man."
ADIA: "Thanks Ben."
STORY: "Hey wanna crash at my place? We can just chill the rest of the night there."
THE GROUP AGREES. ADIA RUNS TO STORY. AS THEY START TO HOLD
HANDS, STORY SEES A TRUCK COMING AND PUSHES ADIA OUT OF THE
WAY. IN THAT SPLIT SECOND DECISION ADIA IS LEFT ON THE SIDEWALK
WHILE STORY IS LAYING ON THE STREET UNCONSCIENCE.
FELICITY: "Oh my God! Someone call 911!"
CUT TO NOEL IN HIS HOTEL ROOM.
In his hotel room Noel is unpacking his things. He gets out a picture of him and Felicity together. They are both smiling with Felicity in Noel's arms. Noel's fingers wonder over Felicity's face as memories flood his brain. A tear falls on the picture. Noel turns to look out the window as the night fills the air so does the sound of raindrops.
CUT TO JULIE IN HER A SINGLE DORM ROOM.
Julie is playing on her guitar attached is a picture of her and Ben together. She sings with a voice full of heartbreak she sings the last verse of Jeff Buckley's "Despite the Tears."
"Don't cry, don't dry, don't dry
Lover we tried, we tried, we tried
and in his mind he knew he'd love her
always
despite the tears"
THE AMBULANCE QUICKLY TAKES STORY INSIDE AND ADIA GOES WITH
HIM. SHE TRIES TO GET OUT OF THE WAY AS THE PARAMEDICS TRY TO
RESUSCITATE HIM. ADIA IS SNIFFING INTO A TISSUE HELPLESS WHAT TO
DO. JIMI HENDRIX'S "ANGEL" PLAYS IN THE BACKGROUND DURING THE
SCENE.
"Angel came down from heaven yesterday
She stayed long enough to rescue me
And she told me a Story yesterday
About the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea
And she spread her sings high over me
She said she's going to come back tomorrow
An' I said fly on, my sweet angel
Fly on through the sky
Fly on, my sweet angel
Tomorrow I'm gonna be by your side"
CUT TO THE HOSPITAL ROOM STORY IS ON A BED HOOKED UP TO VARIOUS TUBES AND MONITORS. ADIA IS BY HIS BEDSIDE HOLDING ON TO HIS HAND. SLOWLY OUT OF NOWHERE STORY'S EYES AWAKEN. HE STRUGGLES TO SPEAK.
STORY: "Adia?"
ADIA: "Yes, I'm still here. Thank God you're all right."
STORY: "If something . . . happens . . . don't blame yourself."
ADIA: "What? Nothing is going to happen. You'll get better. We're going to get out of this place and we're gonna be together, always."
STORY: "I love you."
ADIA: (eyes getting misty) "I love you, too."
ADIA KISSES HIM SOFTLY ON THE LIPS. A TEAR ESCAPES AND MIXES
WITH THEIR KISS. WHEN ADIA BACKS AWAY SHE NOTICES STORY'S EYES
ARE CLOSED. STORY'S EYES ARE VERY STILL.
BEN WALKS DOWN THE HOSPITAL CORRIDOR TOWARDS THE PLACE WHERE STORY IS BEING HELD. HE PAST BY A ROOM WHERE A FAMILY WAS GATHERED AROUND A GRANDFATHER. A LITTLE BOY WITH CHESTNUT HAIR STOOD BY HIS BEDSIDE HOLDING HIS GRANDPA'S HAND.
FLASHBACK SCENE: A MIDDLE AGED WOMAN WITH DIRTY BLONDE HAIR
IS TALKING TO A SEVEN YEAR OLD BOY.
BEN: "Mommy why do we have to go see grandpa?"
BEN'S MOM: "Because he is very sick."
BEN: "But he's always been sick."
BEN'S MOM: "Well, it's a little more serious this time, honey."
BEN: "Can we go for ice cream after this?"
BEN'S MOM GLANCES AT BEN WITH HIS LIQUID BLUE EYES. DESPITE
EVERYTHING HE WAS STILL INNOCENT."
BEN'S MOM: "Okay hon let's go to the 31 flavors afterwards.'
BEN: "Yeah!"
MOMENTS LATER
BEN IS AT THE GRANDFATHER'S BED SIDE BESIDE HIS MOM. HIS MOM IS
TRYING TO TALK TO HIS GRANDPA WHO CAN ONLY ANSWER IN A WAILING KIND OF VOICE. HIS MOUTH IS SLIGHTLY AGAPE SO THAT EVERY SO OFTEN BEN'S MOM WOULD HAVE TO WIPE THE DROOL THAT ESCAPES FROM HIS CHIN. A CLEAR IV BAG HUNG FROM THE BEDSIDE.
BEN: (tugging at his mom's skirt) "Mommy will grandpa get better?"
BEN'S MOM: "I don't know."
BEN LOOKED AT HIS GRANDPA SILENTLY TAKING HIS IMAGE IN. FOR AS
LONG AS HE CAN REMEMBER HE'S ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THIS. HE
REMEMBERED SEEING PICTURES OF HIM INSIDE AN OLD CHEST IN THE
ATTIC. HE LOOKED LIKE HIS DAD: HANDSOME WITH WAVY SHORT BLOND
HAIR AND GRAYISH BLUE EYES. HE HAD A COCKY SMILE AND A COPPER
COLORED BOTTLE IN ONE HAND. BEN'S GRANDFATHER LIFTED HIS SHAKY
HAND AND POINTED TO A TAPE RECORDER ON THE BEDSIDE. BEN'S MOM
RETRIEVED THE TAPE RECORDER.
BEN GRANDFATHER: (his words are slurred) "Play for Ben."
BEN'S MOM PUSHES DOWN THE PLAY BUTTON AND SUDDENLY THE DEEP
STRONG VOICE OF A YOUNG MAN FILLS THE ROOM."
BEN'S GRANDFATHER: "Dear Benjamin, Hello, this is your grandfather speaking to you. I requested for this tape to be played when I knew for sure my last days were here. I found out I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease a few months ago. You're still a baby, just born, but I see how your father is. So like me. I know my diagnosis or your birth isn't going to stop him from drinking. I've tried to stop him many times now and before this tragic episode started. I feel like I've failed in more ways than one as a father. So now, the only way I have a chance for redemption is saving you as a grandfather. I want to stop this twisted tradition before it get passes down again. I see you, Ben, as the strongest one out of all of us. I know that you'll do the things your father and I can only wish we were able to do. To become a loving, and caring father not married to the bottle. I'm sorry I couldn't have given you one, but maybe I can bring that gift to your children. Please honor my wishes and that you should know that there are good fathers in the world. I just hope you become one of them. I love you. Your, Grandpa Benjamin."
BEN'S MOM SURREPTITIOUSLY WIPES A TEAR FROM HER EYES. BEN IS
HOLDING HIS GRANDFATHER'S HAND QUIETLY AS THE SCENE FADES.
ADIA HOLDS STORY TO HER CHEEK BRIEFLY. TEARS BEGIN TO RAIN DOWN HER CHEEKS.
ADIA: "Story. Story. Wake up. Oh! Wake up!"
ADIA SHAKES HIM A LITTLE AND LOOKS AT HIS HEART MONITOR WHICH IS A STRAIGHT LINE. AT THIS MOMENT A NURSE COMES QUICKLY IN THE ROOM AND IS FOLLOWED BY A DOCTOR. THEY GO TO WORK RIGHT AWAY. ADIA IS LEFT IN THE HOSPITAL CRYING IN FELICITY'S ARMS. "ADIA" BY SARA MCLACHLAN PLAYS THROUGHOUT THE SCENE.
"Adia I do believe I failed you
Adia I know I let you down
don't you know I tried so hard
to love you in my way
it's easy let it go... "
ADIA: "God, Felicity. I'll never be able to see him again." She buries her head in
Felicity's shoulder and starts to cry again.
FELICITY: "You don't know that. He might still make it."
ADIA: (looks straight into Felicity's eyes) "No, he was saying his good-byes. he knew. He told me not to blames myself for this, but I still feel that way."
"Adia I'm empty since you left me
trying to find a way to carry on
I search myself and everyone
to see where we went wrong
'Cause there's no one left to finger
there's no one here to blame
there's no one left to talk to, honey
and there ain't no one to buy our innocence "
FELICITY: "Of course, it wasn't your fault. you have to see that. Story sees it. You have to see it. It was an accident."
ADIA: "It should've been me. he had more to give to the world."
FELICITY: "But you were his world. Anyone could see it."
ADIA: "God, how am I going to get through this?"
"Adia I thought that we could make it
but I know I can't change the way you feel
I leave you with your misery
a friend who won't betray
I pull you from your tower
I take away your pain
and show you all the beauty you possess
if you'd only let yourself believe"
FELICITY: "It's what Story would have wanted for you to carry on with your life,
because now it's like he lives through you, you know."
ADIA: "Thanks, but (her mouth is trembling) I love him. I still do. Where will it all go now?"
"believe me Adia, we are still innocent
it's easy, we all falter, does it matter?
believe me Adia, we are still innocent
'cause we are born innocent
Adia we are still innocent
it's easy, we all falter ... but does it matter?"
FELICITY: "I don't know."

"Sure enough, this morning came on to me
Silver-winged silhouette against a child's sunrise
And my angel, she said unto me
'Today is the day for you to rise
Take my hand, you're gonna be my man
You're gonna rise'
And then she took me high over yonder, Lord
An' I said fly on, my sweet angel
Fly on through the sky
Fly on, my sweet angel
Forever I will be by your side"
SALLY: "Dear Felicity, It's hard to loose someone you love no matter how young you are. Yet I think life goes in circles. When something ends there's always a beginning. No one leaves this world without making their mark no matter how small we think we are. Everyone of us has touched someone in their lives. They live on in the memories. There's no ending to that. Like the sun setting into the horizon, the night comes full of uncertainty. We have to brave through it by ourselves and with others. The journey can be hard and look hopeless, but then one day you'll find that hope in the rays of the rising sun. Trust me on some who thought they'd never see hope in the sunrise. Tell Adia that and be there for her even if it's not always by her side. She'll be thankful for that. Love, Sally."
