The Chicago Chapter

by Kat

Author's Note: Sorry about not writing for awhile I had writer's block. ugh. Plus I just made a site Electric Ladyland check it out and if you want to contribute fanfic mail me!
Summary: Ben and Felicity head towards Chicago and meet Ben's cousin, gasp! And Adia moves on.
Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with the creators of Felicity or Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I got the Ferris Bueller movie script from The Ferris Bueller Page where I copied some scenes from it. Those scenes don't belong to me but the creators of the movie. I got a few concepts also from one of my favorite books Hope by Glen Duncan. Amy Jo Johnson's lyrics to "Puddle of Grace" can be found on the Felicity's World. Under the transcript for Episode #16 "The Fugue".

FELICITY: (voiceover to Sally during the entire scene) "Dear Sally, Ben and I stayed a few more days to help out Adia and take care of her. I never saw her like this. She'd have sleepless nights and then hibernate during the day. (draws in deep breath then exhales) I never saw her cry again after the funeral. I'd mostly see her just staring into space. . . but now it's like she can't stand a second inside the apartment. I'm worried about her. I told her to call me if she ever needed anything. I guess I can't know what it feels like because I've never lost anyone that much a part of me . . ."

BEN IS DRIVING IN THE CAR WHILE FELICITY IS FINALLY FAST ASLEEP INTHE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. BEN TURNS TO HER BRIEFLY BEFORETURNING HIS ATTENTION BACK TO THE ROAD. THIRD EYE BLIND'S "THEBACKGROUND" PLAYS.

"Everything is quiet,
Since you're not around,
And I live in the numbness now,
In the background,

BEN: (thinking) "It's about time she got some shut eye."

THE SCENE CONTINUES WITH ADIA WALKING BY HERSELF DOWN THESTREET CARRYING A BAG OF GROCERIES. "SPEED OF LOVE" PLAYS.

"Did you ever see a grown man cry,
The way that I cry,
When I fell in with you,
I knew you was trouble
but oh I guess that I'm trouble too"

FLASHBACK:

BACKSTAGE AFTER THE SHOW ADIA AND STORY ARE CUDDLING ON ACOUCH IN A CLUTTERED DRESSING ROOM. OUTSIDE YOU CAN HEAR THESOUNDS OF EXCITEMENT IN THE HALLWAY.

ADIA: (looks up at Story) "I can't believe this is all happening."

STORY: "What? You mean you never thought about it?"

ADIA: "Yeah, I have. You're a guy and I'm a girl . . ."

STORY (looks down at his pants) "Whew! I had to check that one."

ADIA: (lightly smacks his arm) "I rest my case. We spend a lot of time together, ofcourse, it has crossed my mind.

ADIA MOMENTARILY REMEMBERS SOMETHING BUT SHE DISCARDS ITAWAY WITH THE SHAKE OF HER HEAD.

"It used to be
I didn't give a damn about you
now I'm falling at the speed of love"

ADIA: "I never knew anything good would come out of evolving though."

STORY: "Yeah, I know what we had, but I was so scared that we might loose it. I'm stillscared loosing what we have."

A CLOSEUP SHOT OF ADIA'S LIPS KISSING THE TIP OF HIS NOSE.

ADIA: "I'm happy this all happened. I wouldn't have it any other way."

ADIA TAKES STORY'S HAND WHICH ENGULFS HER TINY FINGERS ANDGIVES IT A SQUEEZE. SHE CATCHES HIS EYES . THEY HOLD EACHOTHER'S GAZE AS THE SCENE FADES TO THE PRESENT ADIA HAS UNCONSCIOUSLY WALKED TO THE TROCADERO. SHE ISWILLING TEARS NOT TO FALL FROM THE BACKS OF HER EYES.

BEN AND FELICITY ARE IN THE HOTEL ROOM IN CHICAGO. BEN IS LYINGON THE BED. HIS HANDS ARE CROSSED BEHIND HIS HEAD. FELICITY ISKNEELING IN FRONT OF HER SUITCASE RIFLING THROUGH IT'SCONTENTS.

BEN: "Hey, you know what we should do?"

FELICITY (turns around to face Ben) "What?"

BEN: "We should go see the sites. Experience the 'Windy City'"

FELICITY: "Maybe a museum, or we could see the Sears Tower."

BEN: (getting up from the bed) "Yeah, let's go to the front desk and see if theyhave any events happening today."

JULIE IS WRITING SOMETHING IN A FLOWER COVERED JOURNAL WHENTHE DOORBELL RINGS.

NOEL: "Hey how's it going?"

JULIE: "I was just looking over some of my writings I could use for the class."

NOEL: "Mine starts in two weeks. I have to look over my old notes and getreacquainted with the basics just in case."

JULIE: "I always have mixed feelings going over old works. Some I'm proud of andothers I go,"What was I thinking?'"

NOEL: "Yeah, I remember having this idea doing a website about cheese and all differenttypes of cheeses and having forums about cheese. But later on it all summed up to me justwanting a cheeseburger."

JULIE LETS OUT A LITTLE LAUGH.

NOEL: "Actually not that many people shared my fleeting love of cheese."

JULIE: "I can imagine all the adoring masses."

NOEL: "So will you be busy with getting ready?"

JULIE: "Not really, I'm pretty sure I know what materials to use."

NOEL: "When do you start school?"

JULIE: "Next Monday."

NOEL: "Well, hey since the both of us have time we should go to somewhere. . . "

JULIE: "Like . . ."

NOEL: "Like Spain."

JULIE: "Spain?"

NOEL: "It'll be perfect. We could take a short flight there and spend a week siteseeing."

JULIE: "I don't know . . ."

NOEL: "Come on, maybe we'll find something . . ."

JULIE: "Well, there was this necklace I had where the pendant was made of clay andflowers were engraved in it. When I went to high school someone stole it when I lost mybag. It was my favorite necklace."

NOEL SMILED AND LAID A HAND ON JULIE'S SHOULDER.

NOEL: "Then we'll go to Spain and find your necklace."

MOMENTS LATER AT THE FRONT DESK

FELICITY: "Hey, um we were wondering if there were any big local events planned inthe city today."

EMPLOYEE: "Well, there is the German-American Appreciation Day Parade later in theafternoon.

BEN: "Thanks ma'am."

FELICITY: "Do you know where the Sears Tower is? Or any good museums?"

THE EMPLOYEE HANDS FELICITY A COMPUTER PRINTOUT OF TOURISTSITES AND EVENTS AROUND THE CITY. FELICITY TAKES IT AND SHE ANDBEN LOOK OVER IT.

FELICITY: "Thank you."

EMPLOYEE: "You're welcome."

BEN SLAPS HIS FOREHEAD WITH HIS HAND.

BEN: "Omigosh! I'm such a mental klutz. I almost forgot that I have family here. Mymom's sister must live nearby."

FELICITY: "Wow! Small world, maybe we can drop in on them."

BEN: "Yeah, it's almost near the end of school now."

FELICITY: "Maybe they're listed if you don't know the address."

BEN: "I hope Bueller is listed in the phone book."

EMPLOYEE: "You're related to Ferris Bueller?"

THE EMPLOYEE HAS A SYMPATHETIC LOOK IN HER EYES.

BEN: "Yeah, why?"

EMPLOYEE: "Oh I heard that he's really sick. Here's his address. I'm sorry I don't havethe number."

THE EMPLOYEE HANDS BEN THE ADDRESS WITH THE DIRECTIONS TO GETTHERE.

BEN: (takes the paper) "Thanks."

EMPLOYEE: "Don't mention it. Tell Ferris we're all pulling for him here."

BEN: "Ok."

BEN AND FELICITY LEAVE TO LOOK FOR A CAB AND HEAD FOR FERRISBUELLER'S HOUSE.

AT FERRIS BUELLER'S HOUSE:

FERRIS IS LYING DOWN ON HIS BED WITH HIS HEAD TO ONE SIDE. WE SEEHIS EYES BLINK LIFELESSLY. HIS FATHER, TOM, TOUCHES HIS FOREHEAD.

TOM: "What's the matter, Ferris?"

JOYCE: Feel his hands. They're cold and clammy.

TOM TAKES ONE OF FERRIS' HANDS

TOM: (to Joyce) "Should you call the doctor?"

JOYCE: (whispers) "He doesn't want me to."

TOM: "Why don't you want Mom to call the doctor?"

FERRIS EXHALES LOUDLY. HE TRIES TO SPEAK BUT ALL HE CAN MANAGEIS A CHOKED GASP.

TOM: "What?"

FERRIS TRIES AGAIN.

FERRIS: (raspy) "Don't make a fuss. I'm fine. I'll get up."

HE STARTS TO GET UP. JOYCE GENTLY PUSHES HIM BACK DOWN.

FERRIS: "I have a test today. I have to take it. I want to get into a good college so I canhave a fruitful life..."

JOYCE: "You're not going to school like this. (to Tom) Maybe I should call the officeand tell them I won't be in."

FERRIS: "I'm okay, Mom. I feel perfectly...Oh, God!" HE'S GRIPPED BY A SEIZURE. HIS BODY STIFFENS AND HE CHOKES. HISOLDER SISTER, JEANIE, WALKS INTO THE ROOM DRESSED FORSCHOOL.

JEAN: "Oh, fine. What's this? What's his problem?"

JOYCE: "He doesn't feel well."

JEANIE: "Yeah, right. Dry that one out and you can fertilize the lawn."

TOM: "That's enough, Jeanie."

JEANIE: "You're not falling for this, are you? Tell me you're not falling for this."

FERRIS: "Is that Jeanie? I can't see that far. Jeanie?"

JEANIE: "Pucker up and squat, Ferris."

JOYCE: (annoyed) "Thank you, Jeanie. Get to school."

JEANIE: (angry and defeated) "You're really letting him stay home? I can't believe this. IfI was bleeding out my eyes, you guys'd make me go to school. It's so unfair."

FERRIS: "Please don't be upset with me, Jeanie. Be thankful that you're fit and haveyour health. Cherish it."

JEANIE: (to herself) "Oh, I wanna puke."

SHE GLARES AT FERRIS. HER EYES ARE MASCARA AND VENGEANCE. SHESLIPS OUT OF THE ROOM.

FERRIS: "I'll be okay. I'll just sleep. Maybe I'll have an aspirin around noon."

JOYCE: (to Ferris) "I'm showing houses to the family from California today but I'll be inthe area. My office'll know where I am, if you need me."

TOM: "I'll check it with you, too."

FERRIS: "It's nice to know I have such loving, caring parents. You're both very specialpeople."

FERRIS ACKNOWLEDGES TOM WITH A PATHETIC FLUTTER OF HISEYELIDS. JOYCE STROKES FERRIS' HAIR.

JOYCE: "I hope you feel better, pumpkin. She leans down and kisses his forehead. Tompats his shoulder."

TOM: "Get some rest."

FERRIS LETS OUT A WHEEZE. HIS GLASSY EYES FOLLOW HIS PARENTSTO THE DOOR.

JOYCE: "We love you, sweetie."

TOM: "Call if you need us."

THEY CLOSE THE DOOR. THE LOCK CLICKS. FERRIS' EYES SHIFT FROM THEDOOR TO THE CAMERA. A SLY, LITTLE SMILE CRAWLS ACROSS HISLIPS.

FERRIS: "They bought it."

THE MTV THEME MUSIC ROARS IN. FERRIS YANKS OPEN THE DRAPES. THEPALL OF THE SICKROOM. DISAPPEARS IN A BRILLIANT GLOW OF MORNINGSUNLIGHT.

FERRIS: "Incredible! One of the worst performances of my career and they neverdoubted it for a second. (looks out the window) What a beautiful day!"

FERRIS TURNS AWAY FROM THE WINDOW.

FERRIS: "Parents always fall for the clammy hands. It's physical evidence of illness. It's agood, non-specific symptom. Parents are generally pretty hip to the fever scams. And tomake them work you have to go a hundred and one, hundred and two. You get a nervousmother and you end up in a doctor's office and that's worse than school."

HE FLIPS ON HIS STEREO AND FILLS THE ROOM WITH THE MTVBROADCAST. "WHEN I WAS BORN, I WAS BORED" COMES ON.

"When I was born
Well, I was bored
My momma told me son
You gotta learn how to live
Ain't so, Ain't so, Ain't so"

FERRIS: "Fake a stomach cramp and when you're doubled over, moaning and wailing, just lick your palms. It's a little stupid and childish but then so is high school.Right?"

NOEL AND JULIE ARRIVE AT THE CONDES DE BARCELONA HOTEL. THEYARE A LITTLE TIRED FROM THE PLANE RIDE BUT ARE NOW READY TOEXPERIENCE THIS NEW JOURNEY AHEAD OF THEM.

NOEL: "We're here."

JULIE: "Yeah."

NOEL AND JULIE SURVEY THE PENTAGON SHAPED LOBBY OF THE HOTEL. THE MARBLE FLOORS GLIMMER AND ON THE OTHER END THEY SEE WALLTO WALL WINDOWS SHOWING THE AN OLD STYLE COURTYARD.

JULIE: "It's beautiful here."

NOEL: (smiles) "Aren't you happy I brought you here?"

JULIE SLOWLY SMILES AS IF SHE DOESN'T WANT TO AGREE SO EASILY.

JULIE: " Yes."

NOEL: "Hey, I have an idea."

JULIE: "What?"

NOEL: "Let's pretend that we're on honeymoon."

JULIE PLAYFULLY ACCEPTS AND FROM THE VIEW OF A STRANGER THECONCEPT DOESN'T LOOK THAT FAR AWAY FROM FANTASY.

FELICITY AND BEN WALK TO A WHITE HOUSE IN A FRIENDLY UPPERMIDDLE CLASS NEIGHBORHOOD. BEN RINGS THE DOORBELL AND THETAPE FERRIS MAKES FOR VISITORS PLAYS. HOWEVER, FERRIS CHECKSWHO IS AT THE DOOR AND RECOGNIZES HIS COUSIN BEN. CAMERON ISRIGHT BEHIND HIM.

FERRIS: (looks through the peep hole) "Wow! I didn't expect for this to happen!"

CAMERON: "What?! That you finally got caught?"

FERRIS: "Oh yee of little faith. My cousin Ben is here from New York City."

CAMERON: "How'd he get past the terrorists?"

FERRIS: "He's not a tourist. He goes to college there."

FERRIS OPEN THE DOOR.

BEN: "Hey, cuz, how's it going?"

FERRIS: (clutches his stomach pretending he's sick) "Not so good." (coughs)

BEN: (laughs) "Dude don't fool me with that lame act. Who do you think taught youthat."

CAMERON: "You taught the great Beudeenie?"

BEN: "Of course."

BEN GIVES A LITTLE BOW AND GENTLY PUSHES FORWARD FELICITY.

BEN: "And this is my lovely assistant, Felicity."

FERRIS: "You got the lovely part right."

CAMERON: "Hi."

FELICITY: "Hi, I never would've guest you two were cousins."

FERRIS PUTS HIS ARM AROUND BEN'S SHOULDERS.

FERRIS: "Why do you fail to see the connection?"

FELICITY: "Actually now that I look closely Ben is the buffer one between the both ofyou."

EVERYONE LAUGHS AT THE JOKE.

FERRIS: (smiling) "But, I'm the more charming one."

THE FOUR OF THEM TALK MORE ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO DOLATER ON THAT DAY. FERRIS AND CAMERON TELL BEN AND FELICITYABOUT HAVING TO PICK UP SLOANE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. BEN ANDFELICITY AGREE TO BE THE PARENTS. FERRIS AND CAMERON WILL HIDEIN THE BACKSEAT.

NOEL AND JULIE ARE IN A RESTAURANT CALLED THE AGUT.

NOEL: "So how do like this so far?"

JULIE SURVEYS THE RESTAURANT AROUND HER.

JULIE: (voiceover as we see the settings from her point of view): "The wood paneledfloors were a deep contrast to the white walls decorated by 1950's canvases and theoccasional lamp. There are candles atop red and white checkerboard tables and cozybooths around the restaurant. It was exactly as I had imagined Spain to be when I did aproject about an imaginary trip here. Although I never imagined I'd be with someone likeNoel."

JULIE: (smiles) "It's so cozy. I remember doing a project for my Spanish class in highschool about an imaginary trip to Spain and I've always wondered what it would be like."

NOEL: "I never thought I'd be in Europe let alone Spain. I was so shocked to hear I gotpicked for Germany. I applied on a whim just to see if I would be given a chance."

JULIE: "You shouldn't be so surprised that you were picked. You're extremely talentedat what you do. I remember talking to Hannah and how she told me you would help withher piano pieces. Not that many people could do that."

NOEL: (looking sheepish) "I was just telling her what I thought and giving her lots ofencouragement."

JULIE: "That's what people need the most when they are in the process of doing any kindof creative piece. People are usually their own worst critic."

NOEL: "You were really good up there on stage."

JULIE: (blushes) "Thanks."

NOEL: "You don't have anything to be embarrassed about."

SUDDENLY NOEL STARTS TO SING TO JULIE THE LYRICS TO "PUDDLES OFGRACE" THE SONG SHE SANG SO LONG AGO.

"Have you seen yourself today
Could you recognize your face
Can you tell me what to say
Mine’s lost without a trace"

JULIE LOOKS STARTLED AT FIRST AS NOEL SINGS TO HER WITH UNDENIABLE FEELING IN HIS VOICE. SHE KNEW THAT THE SONGVOCALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO THE BOTH OF THEM AT THAT TIME

"Mama, Can you help me please
My hero just stabbed me
With a knife that I did lend
Oh, mama’s who’s my friend?"

JULIE FEELS A SHARP PANG IN HER HEART AS THE SONG REMINDS HER OFBEN. SHE REMEMBERS HIM LOOKING AT HER WITH PRIDE AND HERSELFBEAMING BACK AT HIM ACROSS THE ROOM THE FIRST TIME SHEPERFORMED THIS SONG. SHE EVENTUALLY FOUND HERSELF SINGINGWITH NOEL.

Tell me
Tell me
Where do you go?
When all the diamonds have run dry
Tell me
Tell me
How do you feel
After bittersweet goodbyes.

THEY ARE BOTH INTERRUPTED BY AN APPLAUSE THROUGHOUT THERESTAURANT. JULIE AND NOEL LOOK DOWN EMBARRASSED INTO THEIRMENUS. A WAITER QUICKLY COMES OVER TO THE BOTH OF THEM.

WAITER: "That was a very good show. Very heartfelt and passionate. Are you bothprofessionals?"

NOEL: (quickly) "She is."

WAITER: "You have a very beautiful voice."

JULIE: "Thank you."

WAITER: "What would you like to drink?"

NOEL: "Oh just water."

JULIE: "I'll have the same."

WAITER: "Are you both ready with your orders?"

NOEL: "No, not yet."

WAITER: (nods) "I'll get back to you then shortly."
