The problem is that the latter Ralph & Mary are believed to have had children
William WITHERS (1815 Devizes-1848 Devizes), Robert WITHERS (1817),
& John WITHERS (1820);
while Major Edward's father Ralph is believed to have had children
Major Edward WITHERS (1804 London-1883),
Sergeant-Major John WITHERS, Thomas WITHERS (1815) & Mary WITHERS.

Louise WITHERS employed a researcher to sort it out, who found the record

 Ralph WITHERS
m 26.4.1802 at St James, Piccadilly, London by banns sp-Mary LAWES
both of this parish. (Info to LW 1987 ex Microfilm Vol 35.)
LW's researcher concluded these 2 Ralphs were different men stating
"Our attention must now focus on London sources."
 - This tends to negate Caroline nee HARDING's view that Ralph was of Devizes.

HOWEVER PB has a letter dated Sept 1876,Christchurch from Edward's sister Mary
(24 below) to Wm (213 below): "My dear Willie ... My dear father [Ralph 2] was
born at the village of All Cannings [& I lived there] from age 5 to 21 [brought
up by brother of Ralph 2 - presumably by William 1]". To me this confirms that
the 2 Ralph & Mary's are the same couple. It is quite understandable that
PC WITHERS' tree did not pick up all the children of 3836 74 Ralph above; less
understandable why Wm 213 did not identify all his father's aunts & uncles.
However the chart of Wm 213 states as I recall that there may be other aunts &
uncles. (PB to check this.) It would certainly help if the war record of John
23 below gives his birth in 1820.

Wm 213 states that his father Major Edward 21 went to the law courts in London & there read the will of Edward WITHERS (b1701 d1770-1790) surgeon of Newbury who m Anne GREEN in 1722. That Edward is 3837 in http://www.oocities.org/keeto111/withers/withers.html
The Major apparently believed his father Ralph was a grandson
of 3837 & his rightful heir - wishful thinking I believe, as this does not
agree with the tree given by PC WITHERS: the above website gives the 3 sons of
Edward 3837 as
38372 Edward WITHERS (1724-1809) also a surgeon, who had 1 son:
  383721  Rev. Edward WITHERS (1781-20.11.1862) who had 13 daughters & no sons;
 38373 John WITHERS (1726-1726)
38374 William WITHERS (1728-1788) banker in Newbury,Berkshire who had 2 sons:
  383741 William WITHERS (1756)
  383742 Edward WITHERS (1757-1758).

Wm 213 wrote: Dr WITHERS [ie Edward 3837] d c1790 at "All Cannons" - "my ggfr

[Paul - Can you CHECK HE SAYS THIS- Does he mean between 1 William & 2 Ralph?
Or between 21 Edward & 24 Mary? If neither this is more evidence that
Ralph & Mary had children Edward 1804, Thomas 1815, Wm 1815, Robert 1817,
John 1920, Mary]
... Dr WITHERS left Miss CLARK 16,000 Pounds. His eldest son Wm [error:
3836 1 was eldest son of 3836 Thomas]; his grandfather Ralph [2 of this tree,
3836 74 of withers.html] was born All Cannons near Devizes & died Devizes.
Edward 21 & Thomas 22 ran away from home & joined the 7-th Regiment.

m 19.9.1868 Napier sp-Caroline Margaret Vere HARDING (1845 Doncaster,England
-c1941 Palmerston N.) Daughter of Rev. Isaac HARDING a methodist minister on
the gold fields in Oz & NZ. Founded the Wesleyan Church in Dunedin in 1862:
Mitchell Library,Sydney. She was a sister to Mrs Mary BEATTIE of Coomera & to
Rev. Alfred HARDING of Oz. She lived in Foxton & Shannon. PB has a letter of
her mother written 1853 to her mother's parents. She gave a colourful
10 page family history she wrote in 1901 to 2134 Arthur and a short version to
21341 Daisy. PB also has 2 versions. It included the big earthquake in
Wellington (15.10.1848 or .1.1855). I have p1-3:
"The elder branch of the WITHERS family had at one time 3 seats in the N of
England & this property at one time devolved upon a dr who married a Mr BIGG
founding the BIGG-WITHER family. Gran's husband was descended from the
2nd branch." This history was finished 1937 & appears to refer to "A history of
the WITHER family" by Rev. RF BIGG-WITHER (1907). However that book makes no
link between the WITHER family of Manydown & the WITHERS family living in
Bishops Cannings in the 1500s. It seems that not only Caroline but also
Wm's brother Charles, 21(11) below, believed this connection, as Charles held
a copy of this book now with PB. Charles inscribed his copy
"Manydown, Fitzroy Rd, Fleet, Hampshire". So it appears he named his home in
England after the Manydown property of the WITHER family.
  [The site http://www.withersfamily.com/withersgenl.html
giving "Descendants of Sir Knight Robert WYTHER", under no. 6 - Thomas
WYTHER Esq, refers to Thomas inheriting the seat of Manydown. -PB
Sid JORDAN Elsid"at"clear.net.nz 2003 hopes to update the BIGG-WITHER book in
2007 & may put its pedigrees online. He has been to the church at Manydown. He
met his wife Elsa's cousin Richard BIGG-WITHER (now d)
"at his cottage outside Winchester and viewed the family Paintings stretching
back over several hundred years. He also showed us large boxes in his garage
that he said contained the original deeds, titles, wills etc. and other
documents that related to Manydown during the WITHER - BIGG-WITHER tenure.
We also have here copies of a press release in the UK on the TV series of
Pride & Prejudice by Jane AUSTEN explaining that the original story by her
was based around Manydown and that she was engaged to be married to a
BIGG-WITHER but she broke it off."

Their children were reordered 16.9.03 after seeing PB's chart of 213 giving
211-218 in the order given them here; presumably written before the birth of
Frances Amelia 21(10) in 1859/60.

NZ Obituaries Vol. 13 p261: Auckland Star 12.7.1928 "TRAIL OF TE KOOTI.
VETERAN SOLDIER PASSES. LATE CAPTAIN TOM WITHERS. TALES OF ADVENTURE RECALLED.
When he was laid to rest with military honours at Opotiki last week ... a
veteran of the Maori wars & in the 60s was one of the finest of the British
officers who followed the trails of the rebel leade TE KOOTI & TITOKOWARU. ...
In the chase .. MW DELANEY of Parnell was a bugler boy .. on 1 occasion when
his company was doing a forced march through the heavy NZ bush, the kindly
captain carried him across a deep river ...(DELANEY) had gone into action at
Opotiki at the age of 11!

When Soldiers Held the Line. ... One has to picture a camp in the interior
of NZ occupied by the Armed Constabulary in holding the line between Taupo &
Napier. The camp was at Runanga & there were similar stations at Te Haroto &
Tarawera. In the early 70s .. Mr CLARK was posted to Runanga station, & the
officer in charge was Inspector WITHERS.
In holding the line the members of the force had their responsibilities,
but in the main they spent a care-free life. In their times of relaxation
they lived Maori fashion, & in their sports they experienced splendid
comradeship. Captain W was thoughtful for the welfare of his men, & was ever
in the lead in organising healthy recreation.

Prowess as a Bushman. Looking back to those adventurous & colourful times,
his old comrades recall the splendid physique physique of Captain W & the
bright personality which ever made him the centre of attention. As a leader
of men whose calling took them into the heart of the bush he was superb. ...
`... He was so gifted as to be one of the few men who could go into the
bush with Maoris and lose them.'

His old comrades too picture him as the central figure in the camp fire
groups, sometimes relating adventures of the TE KOOTI trail & at other trails,
but rarely speaking of his own share in the adventures. Those were tales of
the most eventful times that NZ has ever known, thrilling tales of tangled
forests, swollen rivers & dangerous defiles, epic tales of elusive enemies &
chivalrous foes.

Mining at the Barrier. After the disbanding of the Armed Constabulary Corps,
... (Mr CLARK) heard that Capt W was at the Great Barrier, & he visited him
there. The old soldier had experienced hard times through losses in mining
adventures, including silver mining on the Barrier, but he was still the
same charming personality, & delighted to welcome an old comrade. ... After
the death of his 2nd wife 3 yrs ago Capt W left for Opotiki to be near the
members of his family. ..."
 Turnbull Library Biographies Index: d1926 Vol 13 p284; vol 5 p30 1950-51.

His name appears on p350 (at least) of "The NZ Wars: a history of the Maori
campaigns & the pioneering period" by James COWAN, printer RE OWEN, Wellington:
WORK OF THE WHAKATANE COLUMN ... The Constabulary divisions chiefly engaged in
the heavy skirmishing here were Nos. 1 & 2 under Captains WITHERS, ...

2183 Kitty KEWISH sent him a postcard of Devonport Racecourse & Narrow Neck in
1913 addressed to
Mr Withers, Ohupu, Great Barrier Island - held by LW in 1987: ".. our house ..
is nearly in the centre ..." - close to racecourse.

2155 4--(Wilson) Paki WITHERS (1878 Pauanui,Whangamata-1978) I met him in 1963
via Syd & Elna HUGHES of the Power Board. Died aged 100.
Wise's Post Office Directories:
1912 Puki WITHERS farmer at Omarumutu; 1927 Paki W WITHERS Opotiki. 1969
Electoral Roll: Stewart St, Opotiki, retired.
"Wilson WITHERS trooper in NZ Rough Riders 1900 (Port) NZRR p3".

LW sent me a photocopy of a photo taken 1900 age 21, written in Maori on the
back is "With love my heart is with God"; & 1 with his launch "the Rahema"
built by him in 1968 at age 89; & one of "the Tamahi" a 3 sail yacht Paki was
on that did the Auckland - East Coast run in the 1920s; and * a long article
with a photo of him after turning 98 "last May" (no date or newspaper name):
"Opotiki's Paki WITHERS carries memories of Boer War, White Island & Te
Kooti!" ... "I can still drive a car, meet & talk to people, but I've only
had enough education to write my name. ... I think I always looked on life
as a bit of an adventure & so I enjoyed every moment of it! I never expected
too much but I felt I would always get my share of the good things - & I
think I have!" ... fought as a colonial volunteer with a NZ mounted unit in
the Boer War...
`Of course we were in the mounted & looked pretty good in our
uniforms ...We left with the 4th Contingent about 500 of us taking our
horses with us. .. landed in Portugese E Africa, the Cape ports being too
crowded. From there, mainly by train, we made our way thru a lot of wild
country to Mafeking, which had just been relieved. It took us just on 3 weeks
to make that trip.' The seige & relief of Mafeking was 1 of the turning
points of the war, which from then on became a series of guerilla engagements,
but apparently there was still plenty for the NZers to do as Paki points out!
`The fighting went right across the country. My horse was shot & so I was
transferred to the horse artillery. Our guns were 15 pounders, & were
dragged by teams of 4 horses, 2 abreast. I was appointed gunner for I had no
horse of my own & simply rode one of the semi-draughts which pulled the gun.
At a place called Haatenzook we were fighting a mounted detachment of Boers
& I had my 1st real action.' It was touch-&-go fighting for the next 12
months, & the NZers became a 1st class mobile unit, ready & keen at all times.

... Back again in the Bay of Plenty & once more working on a sheep & cattle
station, Trooper Paki W, then in the prime of his life, began to make a name
for himself in athletics. ... In his prime he stood 6'3" & became well known
as an athlete ... He always held his own in the wrestling & chopping events
but says `I enjoyed best of all the more dangerous wrestling on horseback,
in which I was never beaten.' .. He travelled to all parts of the country to
compete at shows & race meetings & was an acknowledged champion.

... He lived & worked on White Island for some months (before the 1915
disaster which buried the workers without a trace except for) their black
cat. ... He took on farming his own property ... but could not make ends meet.
(After 3 yrs) he took on carpentry. `I ended up having built 52 houses up &
down the coast.' [Later he camped with his family 6 months on Whale Island as
foreman to organise supply of stone to Whakatane Harbour Board in 1917 for
training walls.

Did he ever see TE KOOTI, NZ's most famous rebel? `Yes of course I did! He
came on a visit to Opotiki when I was a young chap, after he had been pardoned
& was living at Ohiwa. He had plenty of horsemen with him as an escort...
He had no moko at all. He seemed a pretty short man to me, he was friendly..'

His last job was with the Opotiki Dairy Company as a carpenter for 12 years,
retiring at 88. When asked what he intended doing he sent his friends
reeling by saying quietly that he'd give boat-building a go! And that is
exactly what he did & regularly took his craft up & down the coast...
He has c200 descendants down to the 5th generation... He is Opotiki's GRAND
OLD MAN!"

Obituary 19.5.1978 .. died a few days after his 100th birthday, survived by his
95 yr old wife, 3 chn, 42 grchn, 116 grgrchn, 38 gggchn, a total of 199.
(How many of these do we have below??)
A prominent figure at the Opotiki centennial last year. At 99
last year he was the oldest driver in NZ. Granted the freedom of Opotiki
County by the OCC just before his 100th, the 1st person to be so honoured.
Who has the photo of him with photo of 1) his Boer War Medal & 4 clasps,
2) the Maori War medal of his father, 3) The Boer War medal of his brother T
WITHERS of the 5th Contingent? (Is this 2151 Thomas or 2153 Theobald?)
Those who served in New Zealand units in the Boer Wars can be checked at

like rain." Mrs Paki as she was affectionately known was a familiar sight
riding her horse to tend her various (vegetable) plots of land around
Omarumutu & Waiaua. For some time now she has been living with her granddr
Mrs Elsie KREIGELSTEIN (21554 6) of Tokoroa...

Also an article from South Waikato News 1981 with photo of her holding a
meremere of her grandparents. She grew up on the land living in a wiwi - a
hut made of mud, bullrushes & flax. ... She owns a farm in Opotiki & it is
her wish that the farm stay in the family.
And an undated obituary.

See 2184 re his ashes. An artist. For pinups he painted see
 http://www.thepinupfiles.com/withers.html I quote:
'When WITHERS began painting pin-ups for Brown and Bigelow in 1950, he
had already spent twenty-five years working in the Hollywood film
industry. He was ready for a change, and so was the calendar company,
which assigned him the honour of painting the Artist's Sketch Pad
calendar for the 1954 market. WITHERS' first twelve dreamy pin-ups
would be followed by many more in years to come, until the calendar
passed on to Fritz WILLIS in 1961.
Edward WITHERS was born in Wellington, New Zealand. After studying at
Wellington College, he enrolled at the Royal Academy in London and
later at the South Kensington School of Art and the Slade School of
Art. Eager for more training, Withers moved to Paris and the
prestigious Académie Julian, During World War One, he saw service in
Samoa, Egypt, France, and Germany and received three decorations.
In 1924, Withers came to America with his wife and two children. In
his Hollywood years, he did a number of celebrity portraits while
employed in a series of jobs, including art director at MGM Studios,
supervisor in the trick and miniature department at Universal Studios,
art director for Earnshaw-Young Advertising Agency, and art director
for the Sterling Press Lithograph Company. He also painted fine-art works for
his own enjoyment, and his award-winning landscapes were widely exhibited.
In November 1950, at his first Brown and Bigelow cocktail party,
Withers was talking with Norman Rockwell when Rolf Armstrong and Gil
Elvgren arrived. These two pin-up greats were introduced to Withers,
who was bowled over when Armstrong praised him as "one of America's
greatest, most versatile painters" and Elvgren, who had a keen
interest in photography, added "one of the best photographers in the
country".
WITHERS had an analytical mind, a great personality, and a superb
sense of humour - not to mention the technical skills of a Da
Vinci. In a letter to Brown and Bigelow, he once described the view
from his Hollywood apartment in this way:
"At night I look out on a carpet of jewels composed of neon and street
lights, and here I work and am grateful that way over the eastern
horizon, you nice people multiply my effort and enable me to live very
well indeed".
He passed away in Los Angeles in early 1964. Biography borrowed from
The Great American Pin-up by Charles G. Martignette and Louis K. Meisel.'

& Lymn Grammar School, Cheshire & Manchester Technical School. After his fr
died he came to Canada to make his fortune at age 16 then returned to Britain.
He reached Victoria 1890 to find the city suffering a depression. His cousin"
Herbert preceded him & his br Norman followed later. He took a job in the
boiler shop of Albion Iron WOrks as rivet heater at 10c/hr. Next year he
worked at the Aberdeen Salmon Cannery on the Skeen River. In 1892 he went to
work for Rbt WOODS building the 1st paper mill in BC, on the Somass River,
Alberni. When it shut down he operated teh attached sawmill. He surveyed BC
coast water power sites for Scottish interests & reported favorably on the
Powell River Later he crossed in a skiff from Texada Island to Powerll River &
staked out the power site for a Victoria syndicate. In the early 1890s he went
with missionary Melvin SWARTOUT along the W coast of Vancouver Island & to
Barclay Sound & collected material for "Indian Legends of Vancouver Island"
puglished by Musson Book Co 1922. In 1899 he went to Atlin prospecting & placer
mining for 8 yrs. With a partner he staked 22 sq miles of timber. In 1908 he
contracted with the Canadian Pacific Railway to clear the last 8 miles of
right-of-way for extending the Esquimalt & Namaimo Railway into Port Alberni
taking Charles A MOORHEAD (later Lt-Col.) as partner. This co. placed the city
of Port Alberni on the market. He organized the Port Alberni Contract Co. In
1911 & 1912 he visited England making reservation to return on the TITANIC but
luckily changed to the CEDRIC because of some business in London. 1914-23 he
was Vic. mgr of Franco-Canadian Trust Co, Van.Is. Fruit Lands Ltd & Uplands Ltd
which they sold at a profit of $3/acre of Van. Is. to the Franco-Canadian Co.
In 1923 the firm of Carmichael & Co was incorporated. In 1926 he formed a
partnership with David LEEMING (later mayor of Victoria) organising Oak Bay

bought 400 Oak Bay tax sale lots for $63,000 in 1926. He & LEEMING sold $22,000
lots in 2 days by auction from a tent at the foot of Oak Bay. In 1929 came
the slump & Oak Bay Municipality took possession of 100s of lots.

He was president of Victoria Rotary Club 1929 & president of Vic. Real Estate
Board 1927, 1931-32. In 1952 he retired leaving his real estate business to his
only surviving son David.

 jbryant7"at"rogers.com ph 001 (613) 731-4878 wrote 2005:

I first became acquainted with Mr. WITHERS in Jasper National Park, Alberta,
Canada about 1935. At Jasper he was known by everyone as ³Pete WITHERS.² He
was a good friend of my family and occasionally a guest at my parents¹ house
when I was just a small boy. My clearest memory of those early days is
creeping down the stairs in an evening when I was supposed to be in bed and
listening to Pete playing the piano with great skill, especially ³In an
English Country Garden.² Later he mentored my older brother and eventually me
in the ways of the countryside. He was an expert cross-country skier, a
prodigious hiker, a keen tennis player, an innovative kayaker, etc. He
was a man of outstanding character.

I left Jasper in 1946 and saw Pete only once after that. My information is
that he retired from the Park¹s service about 1955 and moved to a small town
in eastern British Columbia - a short distance west of Jasper National Park.
There the trail went cold. With the help of people who got to know him in
retirement I finally found that he had died at Kelowna, British Columbia in
1961. His death certificate indicates that a nephew, David W. CARMICHAEL
[21(12)2], of 1935 Mayfair Drive, Victoria, British Columbia, provided
[his parents & b details]. The funeral home in Kelowna B.C. that handled the
remains reported that the same individual authorized cremation of the body
but no one turned up to authorize or pay for interment of the ashes. After
several months the ashes were therefore interred in a common, unmarked grave.
A sad ending for a grand and greatly loved gentleman. It is my intention to
ensure that a suitable marker is placed in that cemetery. But I¹d really like
to get more information on Pete¹s background first.

... Pete is the name by which he was known to all an sundry in Jasper for 35
years... The only clue I had that it wasn¹t his real name was that
in an article he published in the Canadian Alpine Journal in 1933 under the
name ³Peter Withers² he mentions that four men took part in the famous winter
ski expedition in the Canadian Rockies and names them in a footnote, stating
that one was ³A.L. WITHERS.²

I have also obtained a copy of the
probated will of Major Edward WITHERS but was disappointed to discover that
the last codicil was made a year or two before Arthur Leslie was born.

A Royal Canadian Navy file gives the following.
He entered the Royal Navy 15 January, 1898 about 6 weeks prior to his
18th birthday. He apparently started out as ³Assistant Clerk.²
He was promoted to Assistant Paymaster Lieutenant on 26 February, 1901, his
21st birthday (my guess is that he had to be 21 in order to hold that rank).
He resigned from the Royal Navy 31 March, 1908, at the ripe old age of 28.

It appears that he emigrated to Canada sometime in the next year as he was a
witness at the marriage of his sister, Kathleen [21(12)], to Alfred CARMICHAEL
on April 7, 1909 at Alberni, B.C.

August 4, 1914 - Britain declared war and Canada automatically was included.
That same day, WITHERS sent a telegram to the Naval Secretary in Ottawa
offering his services. His offer was accepted and, with effect from August
6, 1914 he became an Assistant Paymaster Lieutenant in the ³Royal Canadian
Navy (Temporary).² He was assigned to the Admiral¹s Yard, Esquimalt, B.C.
(Esquimalt was Canada¹s primary naval base on the west coast.)

17 June, 1915, WITHERS claimed an increase in pay due to his having served
as an Assistant Paymaster for 8 years: R.N. 26 Feb. 1901 to 31 March 1908 =
7 yrs, 36 days; R.C.N. (Temporary) 6 August 1914 to 30 June 1915 = 329
days.
Pay increase was granted. Amount not stated but information elsewhere in
the file suggests it was increased to $4.00 per day.

25 July, 1916, WITHERS was ordered to Ottawa on temporary service for about
3 weeks. 8 Sept. 1916 he was promoted to Acting Paymaster, R.C.N.
Temporary for duty at Ottawa.

Due to a very large increase in recruiting activity by the end of 1916,
WITHERS was appointed ³Recruiting Secretary² 4 January 1917, ³to undertake
all matters connected with recruiting² for the Canadian Navy.
30 June, 1919 appointed Temporary Acting Paymaster Lieut. Commander,
R.C.N. [with increased pay from $4.00 to $5.50 per day].
30.4.1920, Discharged as part of post-war downsizing of the Canadian Navy.
WITHERS gave his post-demobilization address as:
A.L. WITHERS, c/o Mrs. A. CARMICHAEL, 1932 St. Ann St.,Oak Bay, Victoria, B.C.
1930 He made a 200 mile ski trip from Jasper to Banff with 4 others.
1933 author of "A winter attack on Mt Columbia", Canadian Alpine Jnl
3 September 1939. Britain officially at war with Germany.
4 September 1939. WITHERS sends telegram from Jasper, Alberta to Naval
Secretary Ottawa offering his services, noting that when he was demobilized
at Ottawa on April 30, 1920 he held the rank of Paymaster Lieutenant
Commander.- The Royal Canadian Navy did not accept WITHERS¹ offer perhaps
because by then he was 59 years old.
1955 "Early days of skiing in Jasper Park" - Jasper Yellowhead Museum Archives

Where was he between April 1909 and August 1914 when he entered the Royal
Canadian Navy? It appears from later events that wherever it was, skiing
was involved. When he moved to Jasper National Park in October 1920 he was
one of only two people in the Park who owned skis. In subsequent years he
became locally famous for the extensive trips he made on skis as a Park
Warden and as a spark plug in a group of much younger men who made
nationally significant mountain treks on skis.

As a youth I once teased ³Pete² that it was about time he got married.
He replied that there was lots of time, that his father had been 75 when he
was born and his grandfather had been 75 when his father was born
so there¹s lots of time! Sure enough the Major was 76 when ³Pete² was born ...

Between his birth in 1880 (or was it 1881?) and 1911 I have no information at
all. In 1911 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, apparently as an Assistant
Paymaster and I¹m just now arranging to look at the archives of the Canadian
Navy to see what his attestation papers may reveal and details of his career
in the Canadian navy. Unsubstantiated rumors in Jasper when I was growing up
were that Pete had served under sail in the New Zealand Navy, or the British
Navy, but I have been unable to substantiate them.
