Comments:  This is a fantastic song, and the first truly excellent studio work by Pink Floyd.  Over twenty minutes of great music, this song offers everything.  It is a mixture of several melodies all tied together by one basic melody that enters in the beginning, shows up throughout the instrumental, and comes back strongly at the climactic end.  It is consistently good, with no weak points.  The choir that does the vocals is amazing, and very powerful during the climax. It's not as emotional as my other favourites, but such a prolonged period of consistently good music earns it an above average rating.

2- If
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 4:30
Rating: ****
Comments:  Roger Waters really begins to show off his talent for writing lyrics in this solo contribution.  It's an easy bass melody, with simple yet meaningful lyrics.
Lyrics:

if i were a swan, i'd be gone
if i were a train, i'd be late
and if i were a good man
i'd talk with you more often than i do

if i were asleep, i could dream
if i were afraid, i could hide
if i go insane
please don't put your wires in my brain

if i were the moon, i'd be cool
if i were a rule, i would bend
if i were a good man, i'd understand the spaces between friends

if i were alone, i would cry
and if i were with you, i'd be home and dry
and if i go insane
will you still let me join in with the game?

if i were a swan, i'd be gone
if i were a train, i'd be late again
if i were a good man
i'd talk with you more often than i do
3- Summer '68
Written by: Wright
Running Time: 5:29
Rating: *****
Comments:  This song is Rick Wright's best work next to "The Great Gig In The Sky".  It is fast, up-beat, and just fun to listen and sing along to.  The lyrics are like the rest on the album: simple, yet they have a clear meaning.  The music is strong and the melody is one of the best and catchiest tunes of any Pink Floyd song.
Lyrics:

would you like to say something before you leave?
perhaps you'd care to state exactly how you feel
we say goodbye before we've said hello
i hardly even like you, i shouldn't care at all
we met just six hours ago, the music was too loud
from your bed i came today and lost a bloody year
and i would like to know
how do you feel?  how do you feel, oh...?
how do you feel?  how do you feel, oh...?

not a single word was said, the night still hid our fears
occasionally you showed a smile, but what was the need?
i felt the cold far too soon in a room of ninety-five
my friends are lying in the sun, i wish that i was there
tomorrow brings another town, another girl like you
have you time before you leave to greet another man?
just you let me know
how do you feel?  how do you feel, oh...?
how do you feel?  how do you feel, oh...?

goodbye to you
charlotte pringle's due
i've had enough for one day
4- Fat Old Sun
Written by: Gilmour
Running Time: 5:22
Rating: ****
Comments:  This song starts off slow and boring, and the first few times you hear it, it sounds pretty bad.  But the more you listen, the more it grows on you.  This song features one of Gilmour's first patented guitar solos that'll have your head swaying to the music with your eyes closed.  The lyrics may not be all that good, but the music is great.
Lyrics:

when that fat old sun in the sky is falling
summer evening birds are calling
summer sunday and a year
the sound of music in my ears
distant bells, new mown grass smells so sweet
by the river holding hands
roll me up and lay me down

and if you see, don't make a sound
pick your feet up off the ground
and if you hear as the warm night falls
a silver sound from a tongue so strange
sing to me, sing to me

when that fat old sun in the sky is falling
summer evening birds are calling
children's laughter in my ears
the last sunlight disappears

and if you see, don't make a sound
pick your feet up off the ground
and if you hear as the warm night falls
a silver sound from a tongue so strange
sing to me, sing to me

when that fat old sun in the sky is falling...
5- Alan's Psychedellic Breakfast

a) Rise And Shine
     b) Sunny Side Up
     c) Morning Glory

Written by: Waters, Mason, Gilmour, Wright
Running Time: 13:00

Comments:  This is a meddley of three instrumentals, placed over a backdrop of sound effects from a kitchen in the morning.  You hear a man saying random phrases, while cereal is poured, eggs sizzle, and other such noises are heard.  This is a very innovative and clever song, and fun to listen to.  The highlight is during the third instrumental, while the music blasts at maximum volume and the voice can be heard in the background.

Comments:  While not every song on this album is a masterpiece, every song certainly comes close, and the title track reaches that level.  Only five songs fill up the fifty plus minutes of this album, and for the most part, they are consistently good.  It takes awhile for tracks like "If" and "Fat Old Sun" to grow on you, but once they do, they sound excellent.  The middle song is one of Rick Wright's best, and a very powerful track, while the opening and closing songs are powerful and complicated compositions.
