Meddle
1- One Of These Days
Written by: Mason, Gilmour, Waters, Wright
Running time: 5:58
Other Versions:
Live at Pompeii, P*U*L*S*E (film)
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is an excellent instrumental.  It starts out with a soft wind blowing, then goes stronger as strings come in, and then the drums begin to pound.  It's incredibly strong, and fast-paced.  The music is flawless the whole way through.
(no lyrics)
Words:
one of these days i'm going to cut you into little pieces
2- A Pillow Of Winds
Written by: Gilmour, Waters
Running time: 5:11
Rating: ***
Comments:  This is not a bad song by any means, but it pales in comparison to the other great tracks on this album.  It's not strong, and it doesn't have a great melody.  Still, it's a fairly good song, and works well with the rest of the album.
Lyrics:

a cloud of eiderdown
draws around me softening the sound
sleepy time when i lie, with my love by my side
and she's breathing low, and the candle dies

when night comes down you lock the door
the book falls to the floor
as darkness falls and waves roll by
the seasons change, the wind is warm

now wakes the owl, now sleeps the swan
behold a dream, the dream is gone
green fields, a cold rain is falling
in a golden dawn

and deep beneath the ground
the early morning sounds and i go down
sleepy time when i lie, with my love by my side
and she's breathing low
and i rise like a bird
in the haze when the first rays touch the sky
and the night winds die
3- Fearless
Written by: Gilmour, Waters ("You'll Never Walk Alone" by Rodgers & Hammestein)
Running Time: 6:08
Rating: ****
Comments:  This is a great song, with good lyrics and a great beat.  The music isn't particularly strong, but it's still excellent in it's own right.  This song works well on its own, but is even better in the context of the album.
Lyrics:

you say the hill's too steep to climb, chiding
you say you'd like to see me try, climbing
you pick the place and i'll choose the time
and i'll climb the hill in my own way
just wait awhile for the right day
and as i rise above the tree-line and the clouds
i look down
hear the sound of the things you've said today

fearlessly, the idiot faced the crowd, smiling
merciless the magistrate turns round, frowning
and who's the fool who wears the crown?
no doubt in your own way
and every day is the right day
and as you rise above the fear-lines in his brow
you look down
hear the sound of the faces in the crowd
4- San Tropez
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 3:43
Rating: ****
Comments:  This is a great, fun song.  The guitar and piano work magnificently with the vocals, and the lyrics are fun and simple.  It has a terrific beat, and one of the best melodies of any Floyd song.
Lyrics:

as i reach for a peach, slide a line down behind
a sofa in san tropez
breaking a stick with a brick on the sand
riding a wave in the wake of an old sedan
sleeping alone in the drone of the darkness
scratched by the sand that fell from my love
deep in my dreams and i still hear her calling
if you're alone i'll come home

backward and homebound, the pigeon, the dove
gone with the wind and the rain on the airplane
born in a home with no silver spoon
i'm drinking champagne like a good tycoon
sooner than wait for a break in the weather
i'll gather my far-flung thoughts together
speeding away on a wind to a new day
if you're alone i'll come home

and i'll pause for awhile by a country stile
and listen to the things they say
digging for gold in the hole in my hand
open a book, take a look at the way things stand
and you're leading me down to the place by the sea
i hear your soft voice calling to me
making a date for later by phone
and if you're alone i'll come home
5- Seamus
Written by: Mason, Gilmour, Waters, Wright
Running Time: 2:15
Rating: ***
Comments:  A very simple song, feauturing the howling of a dog named Seamus.  On it's own it nothing, but for some reason it works well with the songs surrounding it.  It takes a few listens, but this song sounds good after awhile.
Lyrics:

i was in the kitchen
seamus, that's the dog, was outside
well i was in the kitchen
seamus, my old hound, was outside
well you know the sun was sinking slowly
but my old hound-dog sat right down and cried
6-Echoes
Written by: Mason, Gilmour, Waters, Wright
Running Time: 23:28
Other Version:
Live at Pompeii
RANKING: #2  ********
Comments: This is the second best song Pink Floyd ever recorded.  From the very first "ping" at the beginning, to the very last "ping" against the howling wind at the end, this song is non-stop greatness.  It is over 20 minutes of consistently great music.  There isn't a single weak point in its mixture of melodies.  It's an easy, soft song from the first few minutes through the first verses, and once the lyrics come to an end, it goes into one of the greatest instrumentals of all time.  The images this music produces are beyond imagination.  It reaches down and captivates your soul, and then it moves on to the next part.  A simple rhythm, a heavy beat, and some awesome guitar playing in the background.  From there it fades away into spacy sound effects, and more images flood your mind.  Then, the music starts up again, very faintly in the background, and builds and builds until the climax at 18:14 that will knock you out of your seat.  Heavy drums and music suddenly burst back into lyrics, and as the last verse ends, it's a reprise of that awesome instrumental, which then fades into soft music with howling wind in the background, and leaves you breathless.  This song makes the album, and is more than worth getting for just this track alone.
Lyrics:

overhead, the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
and deep beneath the rolling waves
in labyrinths of coral caves
the echo of a distant time comes willowing across the sand
and everything is green and submarine

and no one showed us to the land
and no one knows the wheres or whys
but something stirs and something tries
and starts to climb towards the light

strangers passing in the street
by chance two separate glances meet
and i am you and what i see is me
and do i take you by the hand, and lead you through the land
and help me understand the best i can

and no one calls us to move on
and no one forces down our eyes
and no one speaks, and no one tries
and no one flies around the sun

cloudless everyday, you fall upon my waking eyes
inviting and inciting me to rise
and through the window in the wall
comes streaming in on sunlight wings
a million bright ambassadors of morning

and no one sings me lullabyes
and no one makes me close my eyes
and so i throw the windows wide
and call to you across the sky

Running Time: 46:43
Ranking: #6 out of 14 studio albums
Album Highlight: Echoes
Album Weak Point: Seamus
Average Song Rating: *****
Comments:  There is really only one song on this album, and the rest are just space-fillers in comparison to its magnificence, but they fill the space with some excellent music.  The opening track is a very powerful instrumental, and the middle tracks, while not especially powerful, do have nice melodies and lyrics.  But the closing track, making up the entire second half of the album, is among the most amazing songs ever recorded.  "Echoes" makes this album, while the other songs keep it consistently great.
