- Mihalis Written: solo Running Time: 5:46 Rating: *** Comments: This is a decent instrumental. There's nothing wrong with it in particular, only that it lacks emotion. It sounds good, and is a good beginning to this album, but the other instrumentals on it are so much better. It's a solid song, but without much of a concept behind it, it doesn't sound as good. 2- There's No Way Out Of Here Written: by Ken Baker Running Time: 5:08 RANKING: #8 ****** Comments: One of the best songs on the album, this is ironically the one song that David Gilmour took no part in writing. This song sounds great from the opening, and goes on with an excellent rhythm. This song doesn't have much power, but the emotion is there, and the great beat is what makes it a great song. Although he didn't write it, Gilmour sings it exceptionally well. Lyrics: there's no way out of here, when you come in you're in for good there was no promise made, the part you've played, the chance you took there are no boundaries set, the time and yet you waste it still so it slips through your hands like grains of sand you watch it go there's no time to be lost, you'll pay the cost, so get it right there's no way out of here, when you come in you're in for good and never was there an answer, there an answer not without listening, without seeing there are no answers here, when you look out you don't see in there was no promise made, the part you've played, the chance you took there's no way out of here, when you come in, you're in for good and never was there an answer, there an answer not without listening, without seeing there's no way out of here, when you come in you're in for good there are no answers here, when you look out you don't see in there was no promise made, the part you've played, the chance...you took (there's no way out of here, when you come in you're in for good) (there's no way out of here, when you come in you're in for good) (there are no answers here, when you look out you don't see in) (there's no way out of here, when you come in you're in for good) |

- Cry From The Street Written: with E. Stuart Running Time: 5:13 Rating: ** Comments: This is a simple rock song with a steady beat and easy lyrics. It's one of the worst songs Gilmour has ever written. There is no emotion or power to the music. This song is just another random track in an album that lacks concept. Lyrics: black shadows dance beyond the neon glow there's rumours in your head that just won't let go hold on so tight, it makes your blood run cold nailed as the night, trying to save your soul don't even pray, it's just a cry from the street it's fine as you leave the one they keep at home so you've lost someone that you thought you owned you know it's a crime, but what can you do? that's the price you pay with each turn of the screw but don't pay no mind, it's just a cry from the street you really love the night, living on your love it's such a crying shame that things are so rough it's the sign of the scream that it blinds your feet i guess the chances are you wish you stayed asleep don't even pray, it's just a cry from the street |

- So Far Away Written: solo Running Time: 6:04 Rating: *** Comments: This song has a nice melody, but again, it's nothing special. There is emotion here, but it's not very strong, and the lyrics are amateurish and simple. Lyrics: what am i suspended here? shoud i kid myself that i have no fear? i get no choice, i just have to wait it may already be too late i don't know what's going on she is here, but i am gone, i am gone my love is lying here she's far away though she looks so near time will tell, she says to me when a warm coat is all i need her peace of mind, her strength of will it will come, she's sure it will but how can i put my mind at rest? i feel i'm coming off second best and i'm cut with my own knife is this a dream, or is it real life? oh sleep, come on me soon i can't bear this lonely room look at that hand lying there the room is dark, she shows no fear i'm lying still, my eyes are wide my heart is pumping, i'm still alive i'm still awake against my will what will it ever take to still this burning in me? and i'm cut with my own knife is this a dream, or is it real life? oh sleep, come on me soon i can't bear this lonely room sleep, come on me soon i can't bear this lonely room sleep, come on me soon i can't bear this lonely room ooh sleep, don't take too long can't keep singing this lonely song, ooh oh... |

- Short And Sweet Written: with Roy Harper Running Time: 5:30 Rating: **** Comments: This is one of the few truly good lyrical songs on the album. It has a strong opening, and manages to say at the same level throughout. The lyrics are sung with intensity, and they have a good melody beneath them as well. Lyrics: you ask, what is the quality of life? seeking to justify the part you play and hide, fearing it incomplete to try to make it any more or less than short and sweet but short, short is from you to me as close as we all have to try to make it be we're caught watching the dark in the sky who knows? helpless it's time and self to hold the time of day and you, you are a fantasy a view, from where you'd like to think the world should see be true, and you will likely find a few, building a vision new and justice to our time and we, we the immoral men we dare, naked and fearless in the elements and free, carefree of tempting fate aware, and holding off the moral nightmare at the gates and sweet, sweet as a mountain stream we'll look, toward a new day breaking in the east we'll meet, as every future dream unfolds, and surely quality, it is the very least |

- Raise My Rent Written: solo Running Time: 5:33 RANKING: #4 ******* Comments: This is an excellent instrumental, and definitely the best track of the album, and David Gilmour's solo career. It's meaning is anybody's guess, but there is definitely emotion behind it. The melody is beautiful, and Gilmour comes in with his electric guitar, playing with the same kind of spectacular brilliance that he's known for. It's powerful, it's touching, and it is a beautiful track. (no lyrics) |

- No Way Written: solo Running Time: 5:32 Rating: ** Comments: This song is just bad. It's unimaginative, un-original, and un-emotional. It lacks that unique quality that Pink Floyd has and that Gilmour has taken part in. The lyrics are simple, the melody is boring, and the entire song just sounds like it's trying to sound like some other song. It's not awful, but judging by Gilmour's standards, this is definitely one of the worst songs he has ever written. Lyrics: there's no way i'm gonna let go there's no way, because it's my show i'm hanging on for a little while i won't go down easy, that's not my style i'm all tied up, tied up in a knot and i can't decide just what it is i've got did i get out of touch? did i lose my way? i've not forgot, no not a single day now you might believe i'm not a happy man putting myself apart from the common clan what a boat we're sailing, we had a week or two but i know it sounds like me and you so there's no way i'm gonna let go there's no way, because it's my show i'm hanging on for a little while i won't go down easy, that's not my style |

- It's Deafinitely Written: solo Running Time: 4:27 Rating: ***** Comments: This is another great instrumental by a man who is superior at writing instrumentals. While not as emotional as "Raise My Rent" this song definitely has power. It's got a fast, steady beat, and lots of sound effects which give it an almost Floydian quality. The guitar solo is excellent, and the rest of the song just keeps you moving. This is one of the songs that make the album worth buying. It may have a few weak links, but songs like this make it worth it. (no lyrics) |

- I Can't Breathe Anymore Written: solo Running Time: 3:05 Rating: **** Comments: This is also one of the best lyrical songs on the album. It starts off softly with the lyrics, which are actually quite good, then about halfway through the song it suddenly picks up momentum and finishes with an awesome instrumental. This is a strong ending to what could otherwise be considered a fairly weak album. Lyrics: i can't breathe anymore why that is, i'm not sure i've got my feet on the ground in fact, i'm flat on the floor my direction is lost i should pause to take stock it's a new one on me to even dream that you're free it's a tale without an end but the end is there for all to see and if the end weren't so real coming round and round again on me i guess it's all about my pride i want to be there at the kill...kill...kill... but with or without god on my side i know that i really will |

Released: 1978 by Columbia Records Running Time: 46:18 Ranking: #7 out of 7 solo albums Album Highlight: Raise My Rent Album Weak Point: No Way Average Song Rating: **** Comments: This is merely a collection of rock songs ranging from bad to great. There is no concept or flow from song to song; when one track ends, another begins, with an entirely new meaning, which is usually not very strong. Gilmour's talent for songwriting is not well showcased here, but he does demonstrate excellent instrumental writing and guitar playing. All in all, it's a very weak album, but it does have some great songs. |
