Wet Dream
Released: 1978 by One Way Records
Running Time: 43:45
Ranking: #5 out of 7 solo albums
Album Highlight: Holiday
Album Weak Point: Mad Yannis Dance
Average Song Rating: *****
Comments:  This terrific album consists of ten beautiful songs.  Most of them are nothing special, but none of them are bad.  There are a few stand-out songs that are incredibly good, but for the most part, every song on this album is either good, or better.  Of all the band members' solo works, Wright's seem to capture that Pink Floyd sound the most.  While Gilmour's excellent guitar solos are missing, as well as Waters's brilliant lyrics and unique voice, this still sounds somewhat like a Pink Floyd album.  Wright is an excellent songwriter, with a very good singing voice and a knack for writing intense instrumentals, as he showcases well in this beautiful album.
1- Mediterranean C
Written: solo
Running Time: 3:54
Rating: ****
Comments:  Starting off with a few nice chords from the piano, this gives you a good first impression of the album.  Soon, a melody sets in, which sounds kind of cartoonish, but the song is saved again by a saxophone, which plays a brilliant tune.  This song seems to have a sailing theme, like the rest of the album does.  This song seems to describe the feeling of setting sail, just beginning a long journey.  It's not the best instrumental on the album by far, but it is a great song.

2- Against The Odds
Written: with Juliette Wright
Running Time: 3:59
Rating: *****
Comments:  The very first seconds of this song can decieve you, sounding like some sort of latin guitar tune, but once the piano comes in, and the lyrics begin to be sung, this song turns into a sad and beautiful ballad.  The lyrics were written by Wright's wife Juliette, and while they don't come close to the brilliance of other Floyd-related words, they aren't 1-dimensional, and sound quite good with the emotion that Wright puts behind them in his singing.
Lyrics:

each time we return to this crazy place
we break the promise made, face to face
easy to make, easy to break
something's here we don't understand

i don't know why we go on so
i don't want to fight no more tonight
every time's the same, both of us to blame
i don't want to talk no more tonight

we've come through before, now we ask for more
seems to me we can't escape at all
words have no meaning to hold such a feeling
can there be a way out of here?

i don't know why we go on so
i don't want to fight no more tonight
every time's the same, both of us to blame
i don't want to talk no more tonight
3- Cat Cruise
Written: solo
Running Time: 5:16
Rating: *****
Comments:  The second and best instrumental of the album, this song continues to give that sailing feeling, only this time it sounds as if you're heading into rough weather.  The music seems to start far away, and then become closer, until you are finally inside the storm as the saxophone comes on.  This is a very good, fast-paced instrumental, featuring Wright's excellent keyboard playing as well as the awesome saxophone playing of Mel Collins that Wright knows just how to write for, if not play.

4- Summer Elegy
Written: solo
Running Time: 4:55
Rating: ****
Comments:  Beginning like most of Wright's songs with a few chords from the piano, this song takes you in right away, with a feeling of a kind of contentment.  The lyrics are sung in a beautiful melody, the wonderful combination of Wright's soft voice with the piano accompanyment.  Also featured in this song is a great guitar solo, which is odd for an album by a keyboardist, but it sounds incredible, proving that Wright, as he did with the saxophone, can write well for instruments he doesn't play.
Lyrics:

something's gotta give
we can't carry on like this
one year on and more unsure
where do we go from here?
many nights and many days
i've spent with you
talking about what we should do
i can't say
nothing's clear to me no more

one more sleepless night
yet another wasted day
this song has no end
too many words fill my mind
you gave so much too soon
no longer sure where you want to be
turn around
see what you have found

let's drink to absent friends
how they cared, and all they shared
we took our life to the edge
they still try to understand
time is running out
you're going down
come on, let's go wherever they may be
make a choice
stay behind or follow me
5- Waves
Written: solo
Running Time: 4:20
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is another instrumental that sounds like stormy weather, only this is harsher, and seems to fit the image of a sailing on rough waters better.  The strumming of the guitar is accompanied by a minor harmony which sounds enchanting.  This is the second best instrumental on the album, in that it gives the strongest imagery for such a simple tune.  You can listen to this song and forget that you're listening to individual instruments, because it blends together so well.  It is an excellent piece of music.

6- Holiday
Written: solo
Running Time: 6:12
RANKING: #6  ******
Comments:  Because of nothing more than its beautiful melody and excellent chorus, this song manages to be one of the best of all the solo works.  The piano is so moving at the beginning, as well as the lyrics, which are sung here with more passion than any other song on the album.  This is the catchiest tune of the album, and the one song that will stick with you after listening.  The chorus is beautiful and simple, and almost impossible not to sing along with after the second time you've heard it.  This song is a wonderful piece of music, and the best song this excellent album has to offer.
Lyrics:

it was meant to be a holiday
building castles by the sea
another way to live for you and me
time to pause, consider what we've done
the wind is blowing, so come
let's take a holiday

how was i to know quite so soon
that dreams can turn a life around it seems
there is no single way to live our days
between these lines, i know you see a man
who's not quite sure who he is
or where he stands

sail on, sail on across the sea
ride the waves, feel the breeze
sail on, there's no other way i'd rather be

destiny, reality are just a dream
raise the sails, the wind is free
every day i become more confused
which way to go, how to choose

back at home, what holds me here
shut in, not moving, only half a life
clouds hang heavy, they leave me cold
it doesn't have to be this way
the wind is blowing, so come
let's take a holiday

sail on, sail on across the sea
ride the waves, feel the breeze
sail on, there's no other way i'd rather be
sail on, sail on across the sea
ride the waves, feel the breeze
sail on, there's no other way i'd rather be
sail on, sail on
sail on, sail on
there's no other way i'd rather be
sail on, sail on...
7- Mad Yannis Dance
Written: solo
Running Time: 3:18
Rating: ***
Comments:  This instrumental also seems to have the quality of coming at you from far away, but in a more obvious way.  The melody is repetitive and weak, and there is very little real beauty in this song relative to the rest of the songs on the album.  There is no strong imagery, and while the music does pick up at a point, it never reaches the same level of quality that the other brilliant instrumentals on this album can achieve.

8- Drop In From The Top
Written: solo
Running Time: 3:26
Rating: ****
Comments:  While better than the previous song, this instrumental also seems to lack at the beginning what the songs of the first half had.  This is by no means a bad song, or even below average.  It just has more of a soft rock quality than that of a strong musical piece.  The melody is nice, but repetitive, and the song doesn't really get good until the guitar comes howling in.  From there on in, the song is an excellent piece of music, much better than the previous track, and almost as good as the other instrumentals.

9- Pink's Song
Written: solo
Running Time:  3:29
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is the final song on the album with singing.  Wright's voice has a lot of emotion behind it, and while the lyrics are nothing special, they are sung beautifully.  The piano playing is as good here as on the rest of the album, and it seems to strike a chord here, producing a very sad feeling.  This is just a beautiful piece, the quintessence of Wright's brilliant mixture of voice and music accompanyment, in particular the piano and the flute for this song.
Lyrics:

quiet, smiling friend of mine
thrown into our lives
you gave everything you could
saw through our disguise

i had to stay, i could not leave
give me time so i can breathe
give me time to be at ease

patiently you watched us play
parts you'd seen before
even then, we sometimes asked
would you keep the score?

caught between the tangled web
you helped set us free
sadly then, you lost yourself
so you had to leave

and i must go be on my way
let me go, i cannot stay
let me go, i must not stay
and i must go be on my way
let me go, i cannot stay
let me go, i cannot stay
10- Funky Deux
Written: solo
Running Time: 4:56
Rating: ****
Comments:  While not nearly as emotional as other tracks on this album, this song has a great beat that makes up for it.  This is as close as the album comes to mainstream rock n' roll, despite the fact that there are no lyrics.  A synthesizer and some guitar playing as well as a bit of saxophone combine together to make an excellent-sounding final track for this album.
