In The Flesh (disc 2)
Released: 2000 by Columbia Records
Running Time: 75:06
Ranking: #3 out of 5 live albums
Album Highlight: Comfortably Numb
Album Weak Point: It's A Miracle
Average Song Rating: *****
Comments:  The second half of this live album is not as enjoyable as the first, although it is also very good.  Here, songs from "Dark Side Of The Moon" are mixed with several songs from his solo albums.  The main focus is on "Amused To Death" and while those are great songs, it is dissappointing that some other greats from "The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking" are overlooked, and nothing from "Radio K.A.O.S." is played.  Like the first half, the versions of these songs aren't as good as the studio, or other live versions.  On this album, you get a bonus song called "Each Small Candle" which is very good, and serves to close out the album strongly.
1- a) Speak To Me
Written by: Mason
1- b) Breathe
Written by: Waters, Gilmour, Wright
Running Time: 3:22
From:
Dark Side Of The Moon
Best Version: Dark Side Of The Moon
Rating: *****
Comments:  These are the worst versions of "Dark Side Of The Moon" songs that can be found.  They are still incredibly good, but the most of the magic is lost here.  The intamacy of this song is gone, and it just doesn't sound right at all without Gilmour singing it, not that his replacement doesn't do a very good job.  This is still an excellent song, but it just doesn't measure up to other version.
Lyrics:

Breathe, Breathe in the air
don't be afraid to care
leave, but don't leave me
look around, choose your own ground
for long you live and high you fly
and smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
and all you touch and all you see
is all your life will ever be

run, rabbit run
dig that hole, forget the sun
and when at last the work is done
don't sit down, it's time to dig another one
for long you live and high you fly
but only if you ride the tide
balanced on the biggest wave
you race towards an early grave

Words:  i've been mad for fucking years, absolutely years, i've been over the edge for yonks, working me buns off for bands...i've always been mad, i know i've been mad like the most of us are, very hard to explain why you're mad, even if you are not mad...
2- Time
Written by: Mason, Waters, Wright, Gilmour
Running Time: 6:24
From:
Dark Side Of The Moon
Best Version: Dark Side Of The Moon
RANKING (different version): #7  (this version *****)
Comments:  This is one of the greatest songs of all time, and it is reproduced here fairly, with the only major annoyance apart from it not being Gilmour's voice is the stuff the drummer does at the beginning.  Waters sings the verses here, and he doesn't do as well as he does in other songs.  The instrumental, which is the highlight of the song, also seems to be missing something.  Still, if you don't compare it to the original version, it's an awesome song.
Lyrics:

ticking away, the moments that make up a dull day
you fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown
waiting for someone or something to show you the way

tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the raind
and you are young and life is long and there is Time to kill today
and then one day you find ten years have got behind you
no one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

and you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
and racing around to come up behind you again
and the sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
shorter of breath, and one day closer to death

every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the Time
and plans that either come to naught, or half a page of scribbled lines
hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
the Time is gone, the song is over, thought i'd something more to say

home, home again
i like to be here when i can
and when i come home cold and tired
it's good to warm my bones beside the fire
far away, across the fields
the tolling of the iron bell
calls the faithful to their knees
to hear the softly spoken magic spells
3- Money
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 6:11
From:
Dark Side Of The Moon
Best Version: Dark Side Of The Moon
RANKING (different version): #20  (this version *****)
Comments:  Again, Gilmour's replacement falls short of the intensity with which these songs can be sung, but the song is so great anyway that the only thing wrong with it is that it's not the original version.  Compared to the "P*U*L*S*E" version of the song, however, which is much longer than the original version, this falls short, whereas it is actually shorter than the original version of the song.  The instrumental is still the highlight of this song, and it is reproduced here almost perfectly.
Lyrics:

money, get away
get a good job with more pay and you're okay
money, it's a gas
grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
new car, caviar, four-star daydream
think i'll buy me a football team

money, get back
well i'm alright jack, but your hands off of my stack
money, it's a hit
don't give me that do goody-good bullshit
i'm in the high-fidelity first-class travelling set
and i think i need a learjet

money, it's a crime
share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
money, so they say
is the root of all evil today
but if you ask for a rise it's no surprise
that they're giving none away
(away) away (away) away...

Words:  ...i was in with the right...yes, absolutely in the right...i certainly was in the right...you was definitely in the right...that geezer was cruisin' for a bruisin'...yeah...why does anyone do anything?...i don't know, i was really drunk at the time...i was just telling him he couldn't get into number 2, he was asking why he wasn't coming up on freely, after i was yelling and screaming and telling him why he wasn't coming up on freely...it came as a heavy blow, but we sorted the matter out...
4- 5:06 AM  (Every Stranger's Eyes)
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 5:19
From:
The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking
Best Version: In The Flesh
Rating: ****
Comments:  This simple, beautiful song is only better here than the original version because of the background singers, and the emotion that Waters puts behind it which seems greater than on the original version.  This is one of the few songs from "The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking" that works well on its own, and it works very well in this live version.
Lyrics:

in truck stops, and hamburger joints
in cadillac limousines
in the company of has-beens
and bent-backs, in sleeping forms
on pavement steps
and in libraries and railway stations
in books and banks
in the pages of history
and suicidal cavalry attacks
i recognize myself in Every Stranger's Eyes

and in wheelchairs by monuments
under tube trains and commuter accidents
in council care and county courts
at easter fairs and seaside resorts
and in drawing rooms and city morgues
in award winning photographs
of life rafts in the china seas
in transit camps, under arc lamps
on unloading ramps
in faces blurred by rubber stamps
i recognize myself in Every Stranger's Eyes

and now, from where i stand
upon this hill i plundered from the pool
i look around, i search the skies
i shade my eyes, so nearly blind
and i see signs of half-remembered days
i hear bells that chime in strange, familiar ways
i recognize the hope you kindle in your Eyes

it's oh so easy now
as we lie here in the dark
nothing interferes, it's obvious
how to beat the tears
that threaten to snuff out
the spark of our love

Words:  hello...cup of coffee?...cream and suger?...sure...
5- Perfect Sense, Parts I and II
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 7:26
From:
Amused To Death
Best Version: Amused To Death
Rating: *****
Comments:  This song loses some of its intamacy in the live version, but the beginning features the voice of HAL9000 from "2001: A Space Odyssey" which Waters had originally intended to put on his album but Stanley Kubrick wouldn't allow it.  This song is beautiful, with so much meaning behind it, and it works surprisingly well in the live version.
Lyrics:

and the monkey sat on a pile of stone
and he stared at the broken bone in his hand
and the strains of a viennese quartet rang out across the land
and the monkey looked up at the stars and he thought to himself
memory is a stranger, history is for fools
and he cleaned his hands in a pool of holy writing
turned his back on the garden and set out for the nearest town

hold on, hold on, soldier

when you add it all up, the tears and the metal burn
there's an ounce of gold and an ounce of pride in each measure
and the germans kill the jews, and the jews kill the arabs
and the arabs kill the hostages and that is the news
is it any wonder that the monkey's confused?
he said, mama mama, the president's a fool
why do i have to keep reading these technical manuals?
and the joint chiefs of staff and the brokers on wall street
said don't make us laugh, you're a smart kid
time is linear, memory's a stranger, history's for fools
man is a tool in the hands of the great god almighty
and they gave him command of a nuclear submarine
and sent him back in search of the garden of eden

can't you see? it all makes Perfect Sense
expressed in dollars and cents
pounds, shillings, and pence
can't you see? it all makes Perfect Sense
little black soul departs in perfect focus
(hold on soldier)
prime-time fodder for the news at nine
(hold on, hold on soldier)
darling is the child
warm in the bed tonight

can't you see? it all makes Perfect Sense
expressed in dollars and cents
pounds, shillings and pence
can't you see? it all makes Perfect Sense
can't you see? it all makes Perfect Sense
expressed in dollars and cents
pounds, shillings, and pence
can't you see? it all makes Perfect Sense

Words:  stop, dave. will you stop, dave? stop, dave. i'm afraid. i'm afraid, dave. dave, my mind is going. i can feel it. i can feel it. my mind is going. there is no question about it. i can feel it. i can feel it. i can feel it. i'm afraid...hi everybody, i'm marv albert, and welcome to our telecast, coming to you live from memorial stadium. it's a beautiful day, and today we expect a sensational match-up. but first, our global anthem...and here come the players! as i speak to you now, the captain has his cross-hairs zeroed in on the oil rig. it looks to me like he's going to attack...by the way, did you know that a submarine captain earns two hundred thousand dollars a year?...that's less tax, marv...yeah less tax, uh, thank you, emery...your welcome...now back to the game, he fires one. yes! there goes two, both fish are running, the rig is going into a prevent defense. will they make it? i don't think so!
6- The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 5:05
From:
Amused To Death
Best Version: Amused To Death
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is a very strong song, and it's played here with that same strength that made it work so well on the studio album.  The song has a great melody, an excellent beat, and some of the best lyrics that "Amused To Death" has to offer.  This is one of the few up-beat selections from the album, and it's great that it wasn't overlooked.  This song works almost as well in the live version as in it's original form.
Lyrics:

you have a natural tendency to squeeze off a shot
you're good fun at parties, you wear a lot of masks
you're old but you still like a laugh in the locker room
you open the suitcase, behind inner workings
to show off the magnum you deafened the canyon
a comfort, a friend, only upstaged in the end by the uzi machine gun
does the recoil remind you...remind you of sex?
old man, what the hell you gonna kill next?
old timer, who you gonna kill next?

i looked over jordan, what did i see?
saw a u.s. marine in a pile of debris
i swam in your pools, lay under your palm trees
i looked in the eyes of the indian
who lay on the federal building steps
and through the range finder, over the hill
saw the front-line boys popping their pills
sick of the mess they find on their desert stage
and the Bravery of Being Out of Range
yeah, the question is vexed
old man, what the hell you gonna kill next?
old timer, who you gonna kill next?

hey bartender, over here
two more shots and two more beers
sir, could you turn up the tv sound?
the war has started on the ground
just love those laser-guided bombs
they're really great for writing wrongs
you hit the target and win the game
from bombs three thousand miles away
three thousand miles away

we play the game with the Bravery of Being Out of Range
we zap and main with the Bravery of Being Out of Range
we straif the train with the Bravery of Being Out of Range
we gain terrain with the Bravery of Being Out of Range
we play the game with the Bravery of Being Out of Range
7- It's A Miracle
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 8:12
From:
Amused To Death
Best Version: Amused To Death
Rating: ***
Comments:  This is one of the most haunting songs ever written by Roger Waters, but it loses almost all of its intamacy in the live version.  The lyrics are sung just as well as in the original version, and those powerful synthesized notes are present at the end to send a chill down your spine, but the effect just isn't as good.  It's still a good song, and it's as close to being in-context as you're going to get, but it just isn't as strong as it should be.
Lyrics:

miraculous, you call it babe
you ain't seen nothing yet
they got pepsi in the andes
they got mcdonald's in tibet
yosemite's been turned into
a golf coursefor the japs
and the dead sea is alive with rap
between the tigris and euphrates
there's a leisure center there
they got all kinds of sports
they got bermuda shorts
they had sex in pennsylvania
a brazilian grew a tree
and a doctor in manhattan
saved a dying man for free
It's a Miracle, It's a Miracle
It's a Miracle, another Miracle
by the grace of god almighty
and the pressures of the marketplace
the human race has civilized itself
It's a Miracle

we've got warehouses of butter
we've got oceans of wine
we've got famine when we need it
we've got designer crime
we've got mercedes
we've got porsche
ferrari and rolls roice
yeah, we've got choice
she said meet me in the garden
of gethsemane my dear
the lord said, peter, i can see your
house from here
an honest man finally
reaped what he had sewn
and a farmer in ohio
has just repayed a loan
It's a Miracle, It's a Miracle
It's a Miracle, another Miracle
by the grace of god almighty
and the pressures of the marketplace
the human race has civilized itself
It's a Miracle

we cower in the corner
with our hands over our ears
lloyd-webber's awful stuff
runs for years and years and years and years
an earthquake hits the theater
but the operetta lingers
then the piano lid comes down
and breaks his fucking fingers
It's a Miracle
8- Amused To Death

Amused To Death
Best Version: Amused To Death
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is one of the most brilliant songs that Roger Waters has ever written, and it's done wonderfully here.  It starts out so softly, then the lyrics come in, and continue along softly, conveying their message with subtle irony.  After a few verses, the chorus comes in softly, and then all of a sudden you are hit and the lyrics come belting at you in full force.  It's not as powerful as the original version, but it's almost just as good.  This amazing song ends the selections from "Amused To Death" and bring it out strong.
Lyrics:

doctor, doctor, what is wrong with me?
this supermarket life is getting long
what is the heart-life of a colour tv?
what is the shelf-life of teenage queen?
ooh, western woman, ooh, western girl

newshound sniffs the air when jessica hahn goes down
he latches onto that symbol of detachment
attracted by the peeling away of feeling
the celebrity of the abused shell, the belle
ooh, western woman, ooh, western girl
ooh, western woman, ooh, western girl

and the children on melrose strut their stuff
is absolute zero cold enough?
and down in the valley, warm and clean
the little ones sit by their tv screen
no thoughts to think, no tears to cry
all sucked dry, down to the very last breath
bartender, what is wrong with me?
why am i so out of breath? breath?
the captain said, excuse me, ma'am
this species has Amused itself to Death
(Amused itself to Death)
it has Amused itself to Death
(Amused itself to Death)

we watched the tragedy unfold
we did as we were told, we bought and sold
it was the greatest show on earth
but then it was over
we oohed and aahed
we drove our racing cars
we ate our last few jars of caviar
and somewhere out there in the stars
a keen-eyed look-out spied a flickering light
(our last hurrah) our last hurrah
and when they found our shadows
grouped round the tv set
they ran down every lead
they repeated every test
they checked out all the data on their lists, but then
the alien anthropologists admitted they were still perplexed
but on eliminating every other reason for our sad demise
they logged the only explanation left
this species has Amused itself to Death!
(Amused itself to Death, Amused itself to Death...)

no tears to cry, no feelings left
this species has Amused itself to Death
it has Amused itself to Death
(Amused itself to Death)
(Amused itself to Death...)

Words:  we own this at four hundred dollars. you've got to be kidding me! seven, eight, nine hundred dollars! tell you what, while it was seventy five, eighty maybe, cut the price. cut it and give it away to end the day, to end the day out there! it's incredible, not even worth selling... ...years later, i saw bill hubbard's name on the memorial to the missing at arras...and i, when i saw his name i was absolutely transfixed. it was as though he was now a human being instead of some sort of nightmarish memory that i'd had of leaving him all those years ago...and i felt relieve, and every since then i've felt happy about it, because always before, whenever i thought of him, i was always searching myself, was there something else i could have done..."put me down, put me down, i'd rather die, i'd rather die, put me down"...and that always sort of worried me. but having seen him, and his name in the register, as you know in the memorials there's a little safe, and there's a register in there with every, with every name. and seeing his name and his name on the memorial, it sort of lightened, lightened my heart if you like... and when was it you saw his name on the memorial?... ah, when i was eighty-seven, ah, that would be the year nineteenf, eighty-four, nineteen eighty-four.

Best Version: Dark Side Of The Moon
RANKING (w/Eclipse) (different version): #9  (this version ******)
Comments:  One of the greatest meddlies ever written, this version of these two incredible songs is the best version apart from the original.  These words were written to be sung by Roger Waters, and here he sings them well, much better than David Gilmour does in the P*U*L*S*E version.  The words and music of this song are spectacular, and this is a great version of it.
Lyrics:

the lunatic is on the grass
the lunatics are on the grass
remembering games, and daisy chains and laughs
got to keep the loonies on the path

the lunatic is in the hall
the lunatics are in my hall
the paper holds their folded faces to the floor
and every day the paper-boy brings more

and if the dam breaks open many years too soon
and if their is no room upon the hill
and if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
i'll see you on the dark side of the moon

the lunatic is in my head
the lunatic is in my head
you raise the blade, you make the change
you rearrange me 'till i'm sane
you lock the door and throw away the key
there's someone in my head, but it's not me

and if the cloud bursts thunder in your ear
you shout and no one seems to hear
and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
i'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Best Version: Dark Side Of The Moon
RANKING (w/Eclipce) (different version): #9  (this version ******)
Comments:  Just like the song before it, nobody can sing this like Roger Waters, and he sings it here with the help of his amazing background singers.  Every line of this song works with the line before and after it to create such an incredibly deep and powerful meaning, and this version maintains that incredible intensity the whole way through.
Lyrics:

all that you touch
and all that you see
all that you taste
and all you feel
all that you love
and all that you hate
all you distrust
and all you save
all that you give
and all that you deal
and all that you buy, beg, borrow, or steal
and all you create
and all you destroy
and all that you do
and all that you say
and all that you eat
and everyone you meat
and all that you slight
and everyone you fight
all that is now
and all that is gone
and all that's to come
and everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is Eclipsed by the moon

Words:  thank you. well, thank you! thank you.
11- Comfortably Numb
Written by: Gilmour, Waters
Running Time: 8:10
From:
The Wall
Best Version: P*U*L*S*E
RANKING (different version) #1  (this version *******)
Comments:  Despite all that this version of the most spectacular song ever written lacks, it still manages to be a masterpiece.  It is a masterpiece in spite of the fact that the beginning lacks that powerful boom it has in other version, in spite of the fact that it isn't Gilmour's voice that belts out the chorus, in spite of the fact that it isn't Gilmour's heart and soul radiating through the strings like only he can do.  This song is just too good for any of those things to prevent it's excellence and perfection.  Each version, the studio and all the live versions of this song are the image of perfection, the ultimate in power and emotion.  The lyrics are among the most beautiful ever written or sung, and no instrumental has ever or will ever top the magnificence of this one.  This song is missing a lot, but it still manages to be the best.
Lyrics:

hello...hello...hello
is there anybody in there?
just nod if you can hear me
is there anyone at home?
come on...come on...now
i hear you're feeling down
well, i can ease the pain
and get you on your feet again
relax...relax...relax
i need some information first
just the basic facts
can you show me where it hurts?

there is no pain you are receding
a distant ship's smoke on the horizon
you are only coming through in waves
your lips move, but i can't hear what you're saying
when i was a child, i had a fever
my hands felt just like two balloons
now i've got that feeling once again
i can't explain, you would not understand
this is not how i am
i have become Comfortably Numb
i have become Comfortably Numb

okay...okay...okay
just a little pin-prick
there'll be no more aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh
but you may feel a little sick
can you stand up...stand up...stand up?
i do believe it's working, good
that'll keep you going through the show
come on, it's time to go

there is no pain you are receding
a distant ship's smoke on the horizon
you are only coming through in waves
your lips move, but i can't hear what you're saying
when i was a child, i caught a fleeting glimpse
out of the corner of my eye
i turned to look, but it was gone
i cannot put my finger on it now
the child is grown, the dream is gone
i have become Comfortably Numb...
13- Each Small Candle
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 9:08
Rating: *****
Comments:  You get this extra song on the second album, and it's far from a dissappointment.  The rhythm is great, and the melody is soft.  It opens with a beautiful instrumental, featuring the guitar and the voices of the background singers.  Then it goes into a very dramatic singing of very haunting and powerful lyrics.  This song has a lot of emotion behind it, and it is serves beautifully to close this album.
Lyrics:

not the torturer will scare me
nor the body's final fall
nor the barrels of death's rifles
nor the shadows on the wall
nor the night when to the ground
the last dim star of pain
is hurled but the blind indifference
of a merciless unfeeling world

lying in the burnt out shell of some albanian farm
an old babushka holds a crying baby in her arms
a soldier from the other side, a man of heart and pride
breaks ranks, lays down his rifle to kneel by her side
he gives her water, binds wer wounds, and calms the crying child
her touch gives absolution then across the great divide
he picks his way back through the broken china of her life
and there at the kerb, the samaritan serb turns and waves goodbye

and Each Small Candle (Each Small Candle)
lights a corner of the dark (lights a corner of the dark)
Each Small Candle (Each Small Candle)
lights a corner of the dark (lights a corner of the dark)
Each Small Candle lights a corner of the dark
and the wheel of pain stops turning
(and the branding iron stops burning)
and the children can be children
(when the desperados weaken)
when the tide rolls in to greet them
(and the natural law of science)
greets the humbla and the mighty
(and a billion Candles burning
light the dark side of every human mind)

(Each Small Candle, Each Small Candle...)
(Each Small Candle lights the dark side of every human mind)
and Each Small Candle (Each Small Candle)
lights a corner of the dark
