Is There Anybody Out There? (disc 2)
1- Hey You
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 4:55
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
RANKING: #17  ******
Comments:  This is one of the best songs on The Wall, and this is the best version of it you'll find.  The audience barely comes in at the beginning, and then the music starts softly.  One thing that makes this song so great is that it builds upon itself so well.  This song builds in clear, defined steps, one between the first and second verses, then after the second verse, in a knock-you-off-your-seat instrumental.  This is a slightly extended instrumental, but the extension is so incredibly powerful that it makes this song one of the best Pink Floyd has ever recorded.  It then takes a step down, and back into the lyrics, shouted in the way that only Roger can, and ending with a phenomenal bang.  Very powerful.
Lyrics:

Hey You, out there in the cold
getting lonely, getting old
can you feel me?
Hey You, standing in the aisles
with itchy feet and fading smiles
can you feel me?
Hey You, don't help them to bury the light
don't give in without a fight

Hey You, out there on your own
sitting naked by the phone
would you touch me?
Hey You, with your ear against the wall
waiting for someone to call out
would you touch me?
Hey You, would you help me to carry the stone?
open your heart, i'm coming home

but it was only a fantasy
the wall was too high, as you can see
no matter how he tried, he could not break free
and the worms ate into his brain

Hey You, out there on the road
always doing what you're told
can you help me?
Hey You, out there beyond the wall
breaking bottles in the hall
can you help me?
Hey You, don't tell me there's no hope at all
together we stand, divided we fall, we fall, we fall...

Comments:  This song may seem as though it should be more intimate and silent, but when you think about it, it doesn't work without an audience.  The audience is as silent as it gets when the song begins, but after the first line, they shout out in response to the question posed by the title.  This seems to mean that there are plenty of people "out there" but Pink cannot see or hear them because he has built a wall between himself and them.  This is very haunting and powerful a version.
Lyrics:

Is There Anybody Out There?
Is There Anybody Out There?
Is There Anybody Out There?
aaah...Is There Anybody Out There?
3- Nobody Home
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 3:15
Best Version:

Rating: ***
Comments:  This is a song where intamacy counts, and is destroyed by the audience.  In a song that is chiefly an illustration of loneliness and solitude, the outside noises take away from it.
Lyrics:

got a little black book with my poems in
got a bag with a toothbrush and a comb
when i'm a good dog, they sometimes throw me a bone in
got elastic bands keeping my shoes on
got those swollen hand blues
i got thirteen channels of shit on the tv to choose from
i got electric light
i got second sight
got amazing powers of observation
and that is how i know
when i try to get through
on the telephone to you
there'll be Nobody Home

i got the obligatory hendrix perm
and the inevitable pin-hole burns
all down the front of my favourite satin shirt
i got nicotine stains on my fingers
got a silver spoon on a chain
got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains
i got wild, staring eyes
and i got a strong urge to fly
but i go nowhere to fly to...fly to...fly to...
ooh babe, when i pick up the phone
there's still nobody home

i got a pair of gohills boots
and i got fading roots

Comments:  The only thing that makes this otherwise weak song special is its intamacy, and very little of that is captured in front of a live audience, so this song is one of the weakest on the album.  The good side to it is that Vera Lynn was actually heard singing the very song that these lyrics refer to on the first track of this album.
Lyrics:

does anybody here remember Vera lynn?
remember how she said that we would meet again
some sunny day
Vera, Vera, what has become of you?
does anybody else in here feel the way i do?
5- Bring The Boys Back Home
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 1:20
Best Version:
The Wall (film)
Rating: ***
Comments:  This song can send tingles down your spine if you really hear it right.  This version of the song is not much different from others, but it is probably just barely the least good of all the versions for very nitty-gritty reasons.  The end of the song is the very powerful lead-in to the next track, and for some reason, this album loses the magic of that transition.
Lyrics:

Bring the Boys Back Home
Bring the Boys Back Home
don't leave the children on their own, no no
Bring the Boys Back Home

aaah...Is There Anybody Out There?

Words: wrong! do it again...time to go...are you feeling okay?...it's a man answering, he keeps hanging up...
6- Comfortably Numb
Written by: Gilmour, Waters
Running Time: 7:26
Best Version:
P*U*L*S*E
RANKING: (different version): #1 (this version ******)
Comments:  There are two weaknesses in this version of the greatest song of all time.  The first is the very beginning.  It lacks the powerful blaring in of the instruments of the beginning, and the heavily synthesized first word.  The vocals on this version are definitely the weakest of any.  The second weakness hold true for all but one version of this song: it's too short.  The six and a half minutes on the studio version of the song is hardly a taste of the real flavour of this masterpiece, and the seven and a half minutes on this live version is not much better.  The instrumental for this song is usually the most intense and emotional moment of music history, but for some reason, Gilmour is not at his most powerful in this solo.  Nevertheless, it is the best song on the album, and the best song on these two discs as well.  This is the most fantastic work of music that has ever been written, and any version of it can be considered a masterpiece.
Lyrics:

hello...hello...hello
Is There Anybody In There?
just nod if you can hear me
is there anyone at home?
come on...come on...now
i hear you're feeling down
well, i can ease the pain
and get you on your feet again
relax...relax...relax
i'll need some information first
just the basic facts
now can you show me where it hurts?

there is no pain you are receding
a distant ship's smoke on the horizon
you are only coming through in waves
your lips move, but i can't hear what you're saying
when i was a child i had a fever
my hands felt just like two balloons
now i've got that feeling once again
i can't explain, you would not understand
this is not how i am
i have become Comfortably Numb
i have become Comfortably Numb

okay...okay...okay
just a little pin-prick
there'll be no more aaaaaaaah
but you may feel a little sick
now can you stand up...stand up...stand up?
i do believe it's working, good
that'll keep you going through the show
come on, it's time to go

there is no pain you are receding
a distant ship's smoke on the horizon
you are only coming through in waves
your lips move, but i can't hear what you're saying
when i was child i caught a fleeting glimpse
out of the corner of my eye
i turned to look, but it was gone
i cannot put my finger on it now
the child has grown, the dream is gone
and i have become Comfortably Numb...
7- The Show Must Go On
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 2:34
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is the most highly underrated song of The Wall, and it is here in its full and best version.  It's an easy, simple song to come off of the high intensity of the previous track, and it's got a beautiful melody and heart-breaking lyrics.
Lyrics:

aaah ah...oooh...aaah ah...oooh...aaah ah
ooh ma ah ooh pa
Must The Show Go On?
oooh ma, take me home, take me home, take me home
oooh pa, let me go, let me go, let me go
do i have to stand up, wild-eyed in the spot-light
what a nightmare! why don't i turn and run?
oooh ma, take me home, take me home, take me home
oooh pa, let me go, let me go, let me go
it was just a mistake, i didn't mean to let them take away my soul
am i too old, is it too late?
ooh ma ah ooh pa
where's the feeling gone
ooh ma ah ooh pa
will i remember the song?
oooh ah...

8- Master Of Ceremonies
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 0:37

Comments:  This is not a song, but merely a mockery of the opening speech by the M.C.  It's shorter, and done in a slow-motion monotone voice, and is quite amusing.  Just as in the opening track, the instruments blare in to interrupt him before he is done speaking.
(no lyrics)
Word:
good evening, ladies and gentlemen, good evening, and welcome to earl's court. my name is gary udman, and we are going to have a fine show this evening. well, we'd like to thank you for your patience in waiting. the stage is set, and the band is about ready to begin i think...no, not quite yet. well, this will afford me the opportunity to remind...
9- In The Flesh
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 4:22
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is the powerful reprise of the first song of the album, and it is played and sung with maximum intensity in this live version.  The song is a sattire, mocking the attitude of radical demagogues who rally the people with feelings of hatred and intolerance.  This starts the narrative on its way towards the end, and makes a powerful message.
Lyrics:

so you thought you might like to go to the show?
to feel the warm thrill of confusion, that space-cadet glow
i got some bad new for you, sunshine
Pink isn't well, he stayed back at the hotel
and they've sent us along as a surrogate band
we're gonna find out where you fans really stand

are there any queers in the theater tonight?
get 'em up against the wall ('gainst the wall)
there's one in the spotlight, now he don't look right to me
get him up against the wall ('gainst the wall)
and that one looks jewish!
and that one's a coon!
who let all this riff-raff into the room?
there's one smoking a joint!
and another with spots!
if i had my way, i'd have all of ya' shot!
10- Run Like Hell
Written by: Gilmour, Waters
Running Time: 7:05
Best Version:
P*U*L*S*E
Rating: ****
Comments:  This fantastic song is overrated, but it is an incredibly strong piece of music.  In this version, you get a small bonus at the beginning as Roger yells at the audience and does some of his awesome screaming.  This version is strong musically, and the sung the best lyrically, as Roger and David belt out the lines of the song one by one.  It's a powerful effect, and a very powerful song.
Lyrics:

Run, Run, Run, Run...Run, Run, Run, Run...Run, Run, Run
you'd better make your face up in your favourite disguise
with your button-down lips and your roller-blind eyes
with your empty smiles and your hungry heart
feel the fire rising from your guilty past
with your tongue in tatters as the cockle shell shatter
and the hammers batter down your door
you'd better Run!

Run, Run, Run, Run...Run, Run, Run, Run...Run, Run, Run
you'd better Run all day and Run all night
and keep your dirty feelings deep inside
and if you're taking your girlfriend out tonight
you'd better park the car well out of sight
'cause if they catch you in the back-seat trying to pick her locks
they're gonna send you back to mother in a card-board box
you'd better Run!

Words: oooooah! are There Any paranoids in the audience tonight? Is There Anyone anyone who worries about things? pathetic. this is for all the weak people in the audience. Is There Anyone here who's weak? this is for you, it's called "Run Like Hell" let's all have  a clap! come on, i can't hear you. put your hands together! have a good time! enjoy yourselves! that's better! ooaaooaaooah! ...thank you!
11- Waiting For The Worms
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 4:13
Best Version:
The Wall
Rating: *****
Comments:  This song is another underrated Wall song, and while it is not as good here as on the studio album, it is very intense in this version.  There are several melodies in this song, one blaring in at you after another as Pink Floyd draws you further and further into insanity.
Lyrics:

oooh...you cannot reach me now
oooh...no matter how you try
goodbye, cruel world, it's over, walk on bye

sitting in a bunker, here behind my wall
Waiting For the Worms to come
in perfect isolation, here behind my wall
Waiting For the Worms to come

Waiting...to cut out the deadwood
Waiting...to clean up the city
Waiting...to follow the Worms
Waiting...to put on the black shirt
Waiting...to weed out the weaklings
Waiting...to smash in their windows and kick in their doors
Waiting...for the final solution to strengthen the strain
Waiting...to follow the Worms
Waiting...to turn on the showers and fire the oven
Waiting...for the queers and the coons and the reds and the jews
Waiting...to follow the Worms

would...would you like to see brittania rule again?
my friend, all you have to do is follow the Worms
would...would you like to send our coloured cousins home again?
my friend, all you need to do is follow the Worms

Words: are you with us? yeah! eins, swei, drei, hammer!...we're waiting to succeed and going to convene outside brixton town hall where we're going to be...the worms will convene outside brixton bus station, we'll be moving along at about twelve o'clock down stockwell road...twelve minutes to three we'll be moving along lambeth road towards vauxhall bridge...now when we get to the other side of vauxhall bridge, we're in westminster borough area...it's quite possible we may encounter some jew boys by the way we go...
12- Stop!

Running Time: 0:32
Best Version:
The Wall
Rating: *****
Running Time:  This song can always send a chill down your spine when it hits you the right way, and it only loses a bit of its touch in this live version.  The lyrics are so haunting and so true.  These are the words cried out by imprisoned souls.
Lyrics:

Stop!
i wanna go home
take off this uniform and leave the show
but i'm waiting in this cell because i have to know
have i been guilty all this time? time? time?...
13- The Trial
Written by: Waters & Bob Ezrin
Running Time: 6:01
Best Version:
The Wall
Rating: ****
Comments:  This lyrical epic through an insane mind is told here by Roger Waters alone, playing the part of each participant in The Trial, just as the insane mind would do.  However, his voices are not of as good a quality as he was able to make them on the studio album.  It is still a very haunting and impressive song, and this version ends just as powerfully as the others, with the incredible tearing down of the wall.
Lyrics:

good morning, worm, your honour
the crown will plainly show
the prisoner, who now stands before you
was caught red-handed showing feelings!
showing feelings of an almost human nature!
this will not do!

call the schoolmaster!
i always said he'd come to no good in the end, your honour
if they'd let me have my way, i could have flayed him into shape
but my hands were tied!
the bleeding hearts and artists
let him get away with laughter!
let me hammer him today!

crazy, toys in the attic, i am crazy
truly gone fishing
they must have taken my marbles away!
crazy, toys in the attic, he is crazy!

call the wife!
you little shit, you're in it now, i hope they throw away the key!
you should've talked to me more often than you did, but no!
you had to go your own way
have you broken any homes up lately?
just five minutes, worm, your honour
him, me, alone

baaaaaaaaaaaaabe, come to mother, baby
let me hold you in my arms!
look, i never wanted him to get in any trouble
why'd he ever have to leave me
worm, your honour
let me take him home

crazy, over the rainbow, i am crazy
bars in the window
there must have been a door there in the wall when i came in!
crazy, over the rainbow, he is crazy

the evidence before the court is incontrovertable
there's no need for the jury to retire
in all my years of judging i have never heard before
of someone more deserving of the full penalty of law!
the way you made them suffer, your exquisite wife and mother
fills me with the urge to defecate
but, my friend, you have revealed your deepest fear!
i sentence you to be exposed before your peers!
tear down the wall!
tear down the wall...tear down the wall...tear down the wall...

Words: go on, judge, shit on 'em!
14- Outside The Wall
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 4:28
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
Rating: *****
Comments:  The audience goes wild after the wall is knocked over, and the band can be seen again, with the music rising up from the dust.  This is the most up-beat version of this song, and it sounds great.  Instead of a children's choir singing the background, it is the band members themselves, with Roger saying the words like poetry.  The audience goes wild, and you can hardly help feeling that you have witnessed something amazing.  The Wall has come to an end, and in this version, it seems as though it's a very happy ending, although it can still be left up to you.  That's the brilliance of this work of art and of all Pink Floyd's music: they leave the meaning up to the audience.
Lyrics:

all alone or in twos
the ones who really love you
walk up and down Outside The Wall
some hand in hand
some gathered together in bands
the bleeding hearts and the artists
make their stand
and when they've given you their all
some stagger and fall
after all, it's not easy
banging your heart against some mad bugger's Wall

Words: thank you, thank you very much, good night!

Comments:  Most of the versions of the second half of "The Wall" offered in this live album fall short of their full potential.  The best song, "Comfortably Numb" lacks the power that the sung parts have in other versions, but makes up for that with a slightly longer solo, making it equal in greatness to the studio version.  There are a few bonusses that make this half of the live album worth it, including the extended guitar solo for "Hey You", the full-length version of the highly underrated "The Show Must Go On", Waters's harassing of the audience before "Run Like Hell" and a new up-beat version of "Outside The Wall"; all of which make this live album worth listening to.
