Is There Anybody Out There? (disc 1)
1- Master Of Ceremonies
Written by: Waters & Vera Lynn (partially)
Running Time: 1:13
Rating: **
Comments:  This is not really a song, just the opening track, in which the audience is welcomed to the theater.  The voice of Vera Lynn singing can be heard partially at the very beginning, and the track breaks off suddenly as the band bursts in to interrupt the M.C. before he is finished speaking.

Lyrics:

we'll meet again
don't know where, don't know when
but i know we'll meet again
some sunny day

Words: good evening, good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to earl's court. my name is gary udman and we are going to have a great show this evening. the band is back stage and will be ready to go in just a few minutes. before the show begins the house management would like to request just a few things. first, please, no fireworks. also, please, no flash cameras. and any unauthorized audio or video equipment found being used may be confiscated. so please save yourself a lot of hassle. well, i think the band is about ready to go now! no, not quite yet. one thing i would like to point out, upon conclusion of the show...
2- In The Flesh
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 3:00
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
Rating: *****
Comments:  The band bursts in on the first musical track of this incredible live performance of The Wall.  This version is almost identical to the studio version, only the music seems a bit louder, and a bit more powerful.
Lyrics:

so you thought you might like to go to the show?
to feel the warm thrill of confusion, that space-cadet glow
tell me, is something eluding you, sunshine?
is this not what you expected to see?
if you want to find out what's behind these cold eyes
you'll just have to claw your way through this disguise

Words: lights...roll the sound effects...action...drop it...drop it on 'em...drop it on them!
3- The Thin Ice
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 2:49
Best Version:
The Wall
Rating: ***
Comments:  This is an intimate song, and the audience takes away from that intamacy, so it falls short of the effect you get on the studio album.  Still, the song is very beautiful, and serves to bring the narrative along through its beginning.
Lyrics:

mama loves her baby
daddy loves you too
and the see may look warm to you, baby
and the sky may look blue
but ooh ooh ooh ooh baby
ooh ooh ooh, baby blue
ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh babe

if you should go skating
on the Thin Ice of modern life
dragging behind you the silent reproach
of a million tear-stained eyes
don't be surprised when a crack in the Ice
appears under your feet
you slip out of your depth and out of your mind
with your fear flowing out behind you
as you claw the Thin Ice
4- Another Brick In The Wall part 1
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 4:12
Best Version:
The Wall
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is the haunting lead-in to the famous meddley that is reproduced here with even more power than in the original version.  This section of the meddley is weakest on the live album because it sacrifices intamacy for power, as the rest of the album does, but it doesn't work as well in this particular song as it does in later tracks.
Lyrics:

daddy's flown across the ocean
leaving just a memory
a snap-shot in the family album
daddy, what else did you leave for me?
daddy, what'd you leave behind for me?
all in all it was just a Brick in the Wall
all in all it was all just Bricks in the Wall
5- The Happiest Days Of Our Lives
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 1:39
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is the first part of the meddley that has become a part of rock and roll history.  This version features more back-up singing behind the lyrics, which add a new dimension to them.  The lyrics are sung with more intensity than on the original version, and the instruments seem to be played more fiercely as well.  It is a short but very powerful piece of this amazing meddley.
Lyrics:

when we grew up and went to school
there were certain teachers who would
hurt the children any way they could
by pouring their derision upon anything we did
exposing every weakness, however carefully hidden by the kids
but in the town it was well known, when they got home at night
their fat and psychopathic wives would thrach them
within inches of their lives!

Words: you! yes, you! stand still, laddy!
6- Another Brick In The Wall part 2
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 6:19
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is probably the most recognizable Pink Floyd song of all time, yet very few people who know and love this song are aware of this live and better version.  While the singing of the lyrics is better on the studio album, the instrumental here is twice as long and twice as good.  The first half is the same instrumental that we love from the original version, but then it takes off into new territory, and completely rocks.  The PULSE version is just as good, if not better on its own, but this version seems to fit better with the rest of the Wall, and maintain the same emotion inspired by the rest of the album.
Lyrics:

we don't need no education
we don't need no thought control
no dark sarcasm in the classroom
teacher, leave them kids alone
hey! teacher! leave them kids alone!
all in all it's just Another Brick in the Wall
all in all you're just Another Brick in the Wall

we don't need no education
we don't need no thought control
no dark sarcasm in the classroom
teachers, leave them kids alone
hey! teacher! leave those kids alone!
all in all you're just Another Brick in the Wall
all in all you're just Another Brick in the Wall

Words: wrong! do it again!...if you don't eat you're meat, you can't have any pudding! how can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?...you, yes, you behind the bikesheds! stand still, laddy!
7- Mother
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 7:54
Best Version:
The Wall (film)
Rating: ***
Comments:  This is a weak part of both the live and studio albums.  While the lyrics are so good and true, the music isn't as strong or powerful.  This version is a little bit better than the studio version, because the instrumental portion is a little bit longer, and the guitar is played with a little more intensity, but for the most part, it is the same as the original.
Lyrics:

Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb?
Mother do you think they'll like the song?
Mother do you think they'll try to break my balls?
ooh ah, mother should i build the wall?
Mother should i run for president?
Mother should i trust the government?
Mother will they put me in the firing line?
ooh ah, is it just a waste of time?

hush now, baby baby, don't you cry
mama's gonna make all of your nightmares come true
mama's gonna put all of her fears into you
mama's gonna keep you right here under her wing
she won't let you fly but she might let you sing
mama's gonna keep baby cozy and warm
ooh babe, ooh baby, ooh babe
of course mama's gonna help build the wall

ooh babe, ooh babe, ooh

mama do you think she's good enough for me?
mama do you think she's dangerous to me?
mama will she tear your little boy apart?
ooh ah, Mother will she break my heart?

hush now, baby baby, don't you cry
mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you
mama won't let anyone dirty get through
mama's gonna keep baby healthy and clean
ooh babe, ooh baby, ooh babe
you'll always be a baby to me

Mother did it need to be so high?
8- Goodbye, Blue Sky
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 3:14
Best Version:
The Wall
Rating: ****
Comments:  This beautiful song is one of the most dissappointing new versions on the live album.  It's great, but it loses so much due to the audience and other factors inherent in a live album.  It is much more powerful and intimate on the studio album.
Lyrics:

did did did did you see the frightened ones?
did did did did you hear the falling bombs?
did did did did you ever wonder why we have to run
for shelter when the promise of a brave new world
unfurled beneath the clear blue sky?

did did did did you see the frightened ones?
did did did did you hear the falling bombs?
the flames are all long gone, but the pain lingers on
Goodbye, Blue Sky
Goodbye, Blue Sky, Goodbye...Goodbye...

Words: look, mommy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky
9- Empty Spaces
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 2:14
Best Version:
The Wall (film)
RANKING (w/ What Shall We Do Now?) (different version): #12 (this version *****)
Comments:  The opening to this amazing meddley loses its intamacy and power with the faint applauding of the audience at the beginning, but it picks up the power that is loses when the audience dies down, and becomes just as strong as the film version.  This song is hardly worth anything without the song following it, but the following song does not work without this part of it.  The lyrics are different than the studio version, and more powerful.
Lyrics:

what shall we use to fill the Empty Space
where waves of hunger gnaw?
shall we set out across this sea of faces?
in search of more and more applause...?
10- What Shall We Do Now?
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 1:40
Best Version:
The Wall (film)
RANKING (w/ Empty Spaces) (different version): #12 (this version *****)
Comments:  This version of the song is, when at its most powerful, just as powerful as its other versions, but two major flaws prevent it from being perfect.  First, there is now scream right at the beginning, which is the trademark of the film version of the song.  Second, the song does not end abruptly as it does in the film, but goes on, the last line is repeated, then the mood is destroyed by Roger welcoming the audience to the show.  Despite its flaws, this is one of the greatest and most underrated songs that Pink Floyd has ever written.
Lyrics:

Shall We buy a new guitar?
Shall We drive a more powerful car?
Shall We work straight through the night?
Shall We get into fights?
leave the lights on? drop bombs?
do tours of the east? contract diseases?
bury bones? break up homes?
send flowers by phone?
take to drink? go to shrinks?
give up meat? rarely sleep?
keep people as pets?
train dogs? race rats?
fill the attic with cash?
bury treasure? story up leisure?
but never relax at all?
with our backs to the wall
backs to the wall

Words: thank you, good evening, welcome
11- Young Lust
Written by: Waters, Gilmour
Running Time: 5:16
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
Rating: ***
Comments:  This is one of the most overrated songs from The Wall, yet still very good.  It is necessary to the narrative though, because none of the songs following it would work as well.  This live version is better than the original, though, for just a few subtle reasons, such as the guitar seeming to "speak" better.  The solo also seems to rock more, and makes what can normally be thought of as a weak link, a pretty decent song.
Lyrics:

i am just a new boy
a stranger in this town
where are all the good times?
who's gonna show this stranger around?
ooh, i need a dirty woman
ooh, i need a dirty girl

where's a woman in this desert land?
make me feel like a real man?
take this rock n' roll refugee
ooh, baby, set me free
ooh, i need a dirty woman
ooh, i need a dirty girl

ooh, i need a dirty woman
ooh, i need a dirty girl

Words: this is called "Young Lust"...hello?...we have a collect call from mr. Floyd to mrs. Floyd, will you except the charges from united states? he hung up. is this your residence? i wonder why he hung up?  is there supposed to be someone else there besides your wife, sir, to answer?...hello?...this is united states calling, are we reaching...? he keeps hanging up, and it's a man answering...
12- One Of My Turns
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 3:41
Best Version:
The Wall
Rating: ****
Comments:  Like most of the other songs with intimate portions, this song loses a lot of its touch in the live version.  Also dissappointing is the absense of several words that are shouted in the studio version, but not here.  This song illustrates perfectly the experience of flipping out, which is done much better in the studio.
Lyrics:

day after day, love turns grey
like the skin of a dying man
and night after night, we pretend it's all right
but i have grown older and you have grown colder
and nothing is very much fun anymore
and i can feel One of My Turns coming on
i feel cold as a razor blade
tight as a tournaquet
dry as a funeral drum

run to the bedroom, in the suitcase on the left
you'll find my favourite axe!
don't look so frightened, this is just a passing phase
One of My bad days!
would you like to watch tv?
or get between the sheets?
or contemplate the silent freeway?
would you like something to eat?
would you like to learn to fly?
would you like to see me try?

would you like to call the cops?
do you think it's time i stop?
why are you running away?

Words: oh my god, what a fabulous room...are all these your guitars?...god, this place is bigger than our apartment...can i get a drink of water?...you want some, huh?...oh wow, look at this tub! wanna take a bath?...what are you watching?...hello?...are you feeling okay?
13- Don't Leave Me Now
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 4:07
Best Version:
The Wall
Rating: **
Comments:  The is the weakest track of the entire album, but it is also necessary.  On the live album, it loses its intimacy, and therefore it is even more tedious to listen to.  This is by no means a musical or lyrical masterpiece, but it fits perfectly where it is, and The Wall wouldn't be the same without it.
Lyrics:

ooh babe, Don't Leave Me Now
Don't say it's the end of the road
remember the flowers i sent
i need you, babe
to put through the shredder in front of my friends
ooh babe, Don't Leave Me Now
how could you go?
when you know how i need you, need you, need you...
to beat to a pulp on a saturday night
ooh babe, Don't Leave Me Now
how can you treat Me this way?
running away?
ooh, babe, why are you running away?
ooh babe, ooh babe, ooh babe...
14- Another Brick In The Wall part 3
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 1:15
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
Rating: *****
Comments:  The narrative picks up to maximum intensity here in this brilliant piece of music and lyrics.  This version is sung with the most intensity, with the greatest instrumental backing of any other version.  The lyrics are so angry and strong that you can feel it the marrow of your bones.  This is truly one of the strongest moments in rock history.
Lyrics:

i don't need no arms around me
and i don't need no drugs to calm me
i have seen the writing on the Wall
don't think i need anyting at all
no, don't think i need anything at all
all in all it was all just Bricks in the Wall
all in all you were all just Bricks in the Wall
15- The Last Few Bricks
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 3:25
Best Version: Is There Anybody Out There?
Rating: *****
Comments:  This is a track you only get on the live version of The Wall, and it is definitely worth it.  This is the only instrumental in The Wall, written to make time to complete the building of the actual wall in the staged show.  It is a brilliant piece of music, taking you through several melodies from the first half of the album.  It starts off with the heavy beat of The Happiest Days Of Our Lives, and the background voices come in very emotionally strong on that.  It then jumps to its own unique melody, in which drums and background singers take you on a journey through a tormented mind.  It then jumps to the melody for Young Lust for a few bars, and then breaks off into Empty Spaces, through to where the music blares in, and completes the instrumental by fading off into the steady beat that carries into the final track of the first half of the album.  This is a truly amazing track, and once you've heard The Wall with it, hearing The Wall without it makes it seem kind of incomplete.  But you do get this track on this album, and it is one of the highlights of the entire experience.

16- Goodbye, Cruel World
Written by: Waters
Running Time: 1:41
Best Version:
The Wall
Rating: ***
Comments:  It's amazing how Pink Floyd leaves 99.9% of their audience silent for this incredibly intimate and powerful moment of music, yet that .1% of the audience that feels the need to shout and whistle during the singing really annoys you to the point where you'd like to somehow go back in time to when this was recorded and strangle them.  This song loses all it's original meaning from the studio album because of the audience, yet it gains a sort of new dimension at the end.  A second after the lyrics end, and the sound equipment is turned off, the audience erupts in applause.  It's a song about suicide, and when it's over, at the point where the narrative illustrates the thought of it actually occuring, the audience roars in approval.  This can seem to mean that Pink sees his death as a kind of gift to the world, which applauds him as he leaves it.
Lyrics:

goodbye, cruel world
i'm leaving you today
goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
goodbye, all you people
there's nothing you can say
to make me change my mind
goodbye
Released: 2000 by Columbia Records
Running Time (disc 1): 53.39
Ranking: #2 out of 5 live albums
Album Highlight (disc 1): Another Brick In The Wall part 2
Album Weak Point (disc 1): Don't Leave Me Now
Average Song Rating (disc 1): ****
Comments:  This incredible double album offers you live versions of all "The Wall" songs, and a few bonus songs as well.  Most of the live versions are better than their studio versions, either because they are longer or because they are more powerful sounding.  However, some of the more intimate songs from "The Wall" lose their touch with the sound of an audience in the background.  This disc is better overall than the first disc of the studio album, with three extra tracks and better versions of the great songs from the album.
