Forgotten Innocence

This one needs a bit of explaining... I volunteered in my mother's first grade classroom for a few years, and this poem was written after my return to the school when summer ended. I had an emotionally rough summer, and it was refreshing to be able to come to that school, find such loving eyes directed at me, and be able to brask in it for awhile. It made me realize some people love me no matter who or what I am. It was something I really needed at that time, and this poem is about that love children have.

Please, don’t stop looking at me
There’s something in your eyes
Something that redeems me-
It lifts me above and beyond these chains
To a higher place
And it feels as though it’s been so long
Since someone’s looked past all that revolves around
Me.

Please, don’t stop smiling at me
For there’s a joy pouring from you
You think I’m “nice”
You think I’m “pretty”
You watch with eager eyes-
Wondering if I’m going to reach out and embrace you
And I want to
I want to hold onto such preciousness.

Please, don’t be afraid to ask me your questions
For there’s such a purity about you
An innocence I crave-
You don’t assume a thing about me
You like me just the way I am
The way I am with you.
For this smile, this kindness, this gentle touch
Is me
And you know that...even without my answers.

Please, don’t ever stop being excited at the sight of me
Keep running up and tackling me
Keep finding the safety you seek in my arms.
For you make me happy
When you utter “I love you” in that unconditional way
There’s no one I have to be
There’s nothing you want from me
Except a smile, a hug, a kiss on the top of your head
A little bit of love to feel loved.

But if only you knew
The love you give me surpasses any I could give you-
For you make me feel like it’s okay
To be me and only me...
In the reflection of your eyes
In the delight of your smile
In the curiosity of your questions
In the warmth of your hugs
And forever, in the light of your pure love.
