Hide and Seek

Allow myself a moment
To slip into darkness with the closing of my eyes
Just a moment to take comfort in
The one thing that guides me into sleep
Each night a face forms in my mind's eye
How I don't ever want to forget
The way the pillow embraced you
That smile curving up beyond the sheet
As if asking me to play hide and seek
To find the truth beyond it all

I find you as my eyes look into yours
What a lovely gaze; I pause here
There is nothing more I could ask for than to linger
Just a moment of believing you're actually still there
This is where my heart goes to if it dares
Because there's a knowledge that one day I won't have to close my eyes
I will look and I will caress what's in front of me
Knowing imagination cannot possibly compare

Tonight though, I find reassurance in pretending
And allowing myself to fall to sleep
Where you will meet me and embrace me
Like my heart knows you would if you could
Beyond the cares of this world
Beyond the lies in our heads
Beyond the things that hold us down and away
Beyond the unknown into the truth we both feel.
