On the Doorstep

*sheepish smile and shrug* Let's just say a girl can dream...and this is a daydream I often fall into without thinking or on purpose when I want to smile. And sometimes, I've literally dreamed it.

Hesitant knuckles waiver
Unsure feet shuffle below
A look ahead, a look behind
A bite upon your lower lip
Upon release, a tremble moves it

A hand through your hair
A sigh as you step back
Wondering if you’ve truly lost your mind
With frustration, you sit upon the steps
Looking for courage to follow through

You could run, it’s not too late
Nevermind the fact you sent the cab away
That never stopped you before
But terrified eyes look back at your goal
And you gather the will to stand once again

With a deep breath, this time knuckles meet wood
And you jump back at the sound
Lowering your head, hoping not to be seen
Dogs bark and you’re sure it’s a sign of your imminent death
A voice can be heard quieting them and your heart stops

Ever so slowly, the door opens
And oh so familiar eyes fall upon your hesitant form
You try to say something as your heart threatens to explode
But words are your enemy at this moment
You look down quickly and shuffle once again

Just as you’re about to utter “hi” in greeting
You’re knocked back by arms flinging themselves around you
You recover in shock before wrapping your own around her
You both tighten your holds, refusing to let go

A laugh escapes your lips as you think of your earlier terror
And she can’t help but laugh as well in joy
A beautiful sound between the two of you
A comfort after all the miles traveled to get there
Your smile simply won’t leave your face
And hers is now radiating

If only you had known it would be as simple as this.
