Caring for an Infant

---------------------

"'For you will nurse and be satisfied at her comforting breasts; you will drink deeply and delight in her overflowing abundance... you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you...'" ~ Isaiah 66:11, 12b, 13a (English-NIV)

---------------------

Go ahead and read the books. Even go ahead and listen to the advice others give you... well, at least try to be polite. The importance of becoming informed cannot be denied. But remember that each baby is unique, and you know your baby better than any "expert." By keeping your baby nearby you and by listening to him and responsively meeting his needs with promptness and love, you will come to know your baby better than any one else ever could. . . *you* will be the expert on your baby. All the advice in the world won't change what you feel in your heart your baby needs. Go with that feeling.

"You are not just a caretaker of the baby but a partner in a unique and evolving relationship. Both of you start out knowing very little about each other and go on from there to learn more every day, synchronizing with each other rather as dancers do. You both respond to nonverbal cues, to facial expressions, eye movement, muscle tension--even breathing--quite spontaneously. And when you act like this you are invariably doing the right thing." -- excerpted from "The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth" by Sheila Kitzinger (page 321)

". . . EACH period has it's own particular joys and moments to cherish and the best advice I could give anyone with a new baby is to really try to "live in the moment" and treasure it all, AS it is happening; and not just when they are infants, either, but at EVERY stage." ~ Lynne
