Review : by KERRANG!(UK) Rating KKKK Return of the New Jersey Superstars after a five-year absence. What's left to do when you've conquered the world and made more comebacks than Rocky? The answer, according to Bon Jovi's seventh album Crush is to simply quit worrying and have more fun. Quietly saluting many of the great acts that have influenced them over the years, Bon Jovi sound like they had a blast with this record. And chances are so will you. Opener and first single "It's My Life" is "Livin' On A Prayer" for the year 2000: a less optimistic but no less bloody-minded anthem for the have-nots. It even recalls Tommy and Gina, the characters from the 1986 classic. Forget the Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora solo stuff, "It's My Life" is an early indication that their basic instinct to rock remains. Last album "These Days" showed signs of a retreat from what made Bon Jovi great, but here there are several reminders. "Say It Isn't So" and "Two Storey Town" have the requisite swagger, while "Just Older" and "Captain Crash" are warm, pacey songs of friendship and brotherhood. When it comes to wry observations on those things in life we take for granted, Bon Jovi rarely fail to deliver. The epic "The Next 100 Years" refuses to play by the rules. A windswept rocker is suddenly transformed by a wash of Beatley psychedelia and some truly explosive guitar work from Richie Sambora. Back in the days when their every move seemed to matter, they would have shrunk from such experimentation. Naturally, you are not to be spared the ballads. Cynics will moan but, yet again, Bon Jovi manage the heart-on-sleeve thing better than anyone else in the business. "Thank You" and "Save The World" are swathed in orchestration and the platinum-assured sound of Jon and Richie singing their hearts out. The dreamy, almost spaced-out "She's A Mystery" is just as impressive: none of the pomp, but every shred of sincerity going. What's most heartening is that "Crush" does not tail off like "These Days" It, in fact, ends with three show-stopping rockers (including one hidden track) - strutting boogie for a generation that has forgotten how to party. Bon Jovi may not have anything new to offer, but no one else does "old" quite so well." |
