HEADING FOR VICTORY
Trevor Morris screaming through Pine Tree Bend at the
Western Springs Speedway on his way to become the
first New Zealander EVER to win a World Speedcar
Championship on his home track. The race was also won
in record time, 30 laps in 9m 9s, taking 11.2s off the Bill
Good's 1968 record.
Trying hard to get inside Morris is the American Dave Strickland , who has his front grill removed on Morris's
rear wheel in the process. Second was Australian
Champion Ronald McKay and third Barry Butterworth.
14,000 spectators were in attendance that night at
Western Springs.
Earlier in the evening the motor suffered a blown head
gasket. Morris did not contest the next event of the evening
while mechanic, Bob Leikis rebuilt the motor. The job was
completed just before the start of the World 30 Lap race.
