My Programme for a
Second Phase of Career and Activity

Make Retired Life Creative and Inspiring to others

"Life after 60 should not be looked as an end of a lifetime's work. It should be seen as the beginning of a new chapter. It should not be seen like climbing down a hill after having worked hard to climb up the steep slope of life. It should be viewed as another climb, gentler this time with more time for living, loving and caring. You are a treasure house of experience. You can impart that experience to the youngsters around you. View your life with an up-beat positive attitude."

The SWOT of Senior Citizenship

Strength:
Sharper intellect and knowledge (a very valuable resource in the Service-centered economy), wider experience and analytical capacity, better financial security (through planned steps taken from years earlier)

Weakness:
Declining physical strength,
Lack of full-time activity after retirement

Threats:
Health when neglected,
self-inflicted despair, when programme for old age not designed

Opportunities:
Plan a productive course of life and activity suited to your energy resource (limited) and intellectual resources (large)> Accept higher responsibility for care of your health. Plan minimum dependence on youngsters. Try to be useful to the family and in particular to the society at large.

However on 30.06.1996, when I actually retired the inspiring wisdom quoted in margin to the right did not dawn on me. I was given two "parting gifts" by the vindictive management of MYBANK on 29.06.1996, a punishment of reduction of one increment for the 10th charge sheet and a fresh charge sheet, the eleventh delivered conspicuously at the 11th hour just before retirement. These kept my retirement benefits at abeyance pending decision on the charge sheet. Bank chose to keep me busy for some more months pursuing the 11th charge sheet leisurely. These charge sheets are a legacy of the past period of my service, I have amply dealt with them already covered by 7 chapters and one epilogue in the Project titled 'My Encounters with Corporate Corruption in my Service'. Suffice it therefore to say here that it kept me engaged for a few more months and the new dullness in life, as apprehended as an the impact of retirement was not immediately discernable.

There were seventy employees working with me at Tilak Nagar Branch of MYBANK. Immediately on retirement, instead of keeping idle at Home, I joined Aptech Computer Education Centre at Rajouri Garden, New Delhi on 01.07.1996, which facilitated me the company of still larger number of students, all pursuing strenuously a mission and a goal in life. Though I am also a student, both co-students and the faculty uniformly addressed me as 'Uncle', and this made me a unique student. I felt I had gone back to inaugurate a second phase of my career.

I had spent all my time hitherto under a single employer in the sphere and profession of banking. I needed now to re-orient myself for any challenging position in a Corporate Organization extending my hitherto exclusive knowledge resources from bank management to business management. Taking commercial employment after retirement before completion of two years needed prior sanction of the bank management. My desire was to mobilize the knowledge resource in this period of two years and then go for a regular employment with a Corporate Organization. This thought led me to also join the CFA programme of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of Hyderabad.

In September 97, my disciplinary cases were over and I also could receive all my retirement benefits. The first investment I made was on a personal computer with all accessories. This hardware ever since has become my life-long companion. I secured 500-hours Internet Connection from M/s.Satyam Computers, and started surfing the net and using the computer as part of my daily activities.

In the same month Mr.Bhagwan Dass Dhameja of M/s.Premier LPG Ltd., New Delhi came to me and requested for my services for his organization. I did not join immediately, but helped him ex-gratia, documenting procedures, systems, Draft-letter-Formats and Format for MIS-Reports for use of his business concern. I codified system-procedures with titles grouped under categories, "human resource management", "office organization routine", "material/stores purchase routine", "material management", "stores management" and "marketing" (i.e. indirect system of marketing through appointment of business-agents, distributors and dealers). At the insistence of Mr.Dhameja, I was designated as General Manager of the Company in July 1998 and I also accepted to receive remuneration from that month. I was with M/s.Premier LPG Ltd up to September 1999 and as the work undertaken was finished, I resigned from there in October,1999.

For a few months I was busy with an old friend of mine Mr.Usman Sheriff of M/s.Aitco Cargo Movers Ltd of Bombay, moving from Delhi, to Bombay, Hyderabad, Madras and Bangalore on different assignments of his all-India Transport Organization. It is in this midst that on 26.03.2000 I suffered a mild stoke at Delhi and was hospitalised for 10 days. I was moved to Hyderabad on 31.03.2000 and I recovered fairly well in the month of April 2000 itself. I again pursued my Computer education joining SSI Computer Institute, Panjagutta, Hyderabad from July 2000 for a year and completed diverse courses like E-Commerce, Java, SQL-Server, Visual Basic, Advanced Java and Web-Development.

The versatility of the Internet and the rich wealth of information it contained attracted me and I started spending more and more time every day surfing the net.

It is in this background that I decided to take up projects for literature survey on Departmental Inquiries. A departmental Inquiry is at best to fight a threat, and thus featured a negative content. Why not commence in the first instance from the positive world i.e. from dealing with personal Integrity and Discipline and switch over to Safeguards and remedies, Law for the Public Servant etc. and then logically proceed to defending Departmental Inquiries and seeking legal remedies. I started searching for useful material from Web and was surprised to find the web can provide a ocean of ready-information on anything and everything under the sun.

The newly gained knowledge of web-designing and the experience of preparing these two projects inspired me to prepare several more projects all relevant for Bank Officers and to publish them over the web through my Personal Web Page. The data published can be accessed by anyone and from anywhere in the world. But my target audience are bank officers in India, and all those interested in Banking in India.

I started preparing the projects from October 2001 and stored them first in the hardware of my computer on MS-Word format. Yahoo GeoCities provided me the facility to hoist my web page upto 15 MB storage free of cost from their web server. I started creating the personal web page from 14.02.2002 onwards.

I have designed the Web Site with three segments, personal history information (AboutMe pages), Literature Projects(relevant to Bank Officers) and Learning Circle (on subjects "Management", "Finance" and "Banking".)

I have no intention to settle score with anyone. I leave things to everyone's conscience and value system. Nature does the balancing. The proverb says "who-ever sows the wind reaps the whirlwind". Whirlwind, yes, has been reaped by the then CMD on 14.01.2000 and GM, Personnel earlier in March 1997. My purpose is to expose the truth and build a protective insulation for officers for the future.

I feel that I have taken up a new and long voyage. I have hundreds of miles to go and the first few steps have just been taken.
