What is "magical realism"?

Magical Realism uses:
reality-based fiction
incorporates fantastic elements
nonproblematic fusion of fantasy and reality
fantastic elements are considered normal by the characters and readers
not horror, fantasy, science fiction, fairy tales, legends, or folklore
focuses on spirituality before objects
makes ordinary subjects seem extraordinary
suggests quality of universality
not always limited to one time period
unlimited in what can be accomplished
"confusion within clarity"
suggests various stylistic trends in composition
celebration of the mundane
romantic, realistic, naturalistic
plots are logically conceived
each story has its own personality
aim is to express rather than evoke emotions
quality of timeless fluidity
no need to justify the unreal elements or why fantastic events happen
magical attitude toward reality explained within the reality of things
an attitude toward reality or world view expressed in a variety of ways
an aesthetic category derived from postmodernist painting
discovers what is mysterious in life and human acts
even in fantasy, clings to reality
way of viewing the world
emotional response to the world
reality mixed with non-reality
the unreal happens as part of or an extension of reality
alters the familiar by using a technique called "defamiliarization"
adds a magical dimension to reality using a technique called "supplementation"
