DIRICAWL – MoMC- XX

The diricawl is a plump, fluffy-feathered, flightless bird. They originated in Mauritius and are widely known for their method of escaping danger. The diricawl is able to vanish in a puff of feathers and reappear elsewhere. It was at one time seen often by Muggles, but since Muggles were not aware of its vanishing ability, and saw the diricawl less and less they assumed it to be extinct. It was then known as the ‘dodo’. The International Confederation of Wizards thought that since the extinction of the ‘dodo’ has raised Muggle awareness of the dangers of slaying animals, it was unnecessary to make them aware of the continued existence of the diricawl.

AUGUREY – MoMC-XX

The augurey is found in northern Europe, Britain and Ireland. It is a thin and grief-stricken looking bird that is greenish black in colour. It is often resembled to a small and malnourished vulture. It feeds on large insects, fairies and the occasional fly. It is usual see in its nest of bramble and thorns shaped like a tear. The augurey has a distinctive low and throbbing cry, which was once thought to foretell a death. Their nests were avoided for fear of hearing their cry. More than one wizard is believed to have suffered a heart attack after hearing an augurey cry. Studies however have proved that the augurey wails when rain is coming. After these studies the bird has almost become a weather forecaster, though in the winter it will howl constantly. An augurey feather can’t be used as a writing quill because they repel the ink. The augurey is sometimes also known as the Irish Phoenix.

PHOENIX – MoMC-XXXX (It earns this rating because few wizards have domesticated the phoenix.)

The phoenix is approximately the size of a swan, but is a scarlet bird with a long golden beak, tail and talons. It is found in Egypt, India and China, usually on mountain peaks. Phoenixes live for a very long time, as they are able to regenerate by bursting into flames and rising again from the ashes as a chick. The cycle of death and rebirth in ancient Greek and Egyptian times was associated with the sun that was believed to “die” each night when all goes dark- and then born again the next day. It has never been known to kill as they only eat herbs. Like the diricawl, phoenixes are able to disappear and reappear. Phoenix tears have magical healing properties. They are able to heal cuts, scrapes and even some magic wounds. Phoenix songs also contain magic. It is said that the song will increase the courage of the pure of heart and will strike fear into the hearts of the impure. In mythology the phoenix has been a symbol of power, integrity, loyalty, honesty and justice for centuries.
