M*A*S*H Trivia

Visit Tuttle's MASH page for photos. The 1970 film earned $36 million and was seen by about 14 million people in the theaters. The TV show ran from 9/72 to 2/83. The TV sequel AfterMASH ran from 9/83 to 5/85. Another pilot sitcom, W*A*L*T*E*R, was not picked up for production.

Bit players on TV included: Ned Beatty, Catherine Bergstrom, Ed Begley Jr., Andrew Dice Clay, Blythe Danner, Teri Garr, Mariette Hartley, Ron Howard, Shelley Long, Mako, Stuart Margolin, Richard Masur, Pat Morita, Leslie Nielsen, John Ritter, James B Sikking, Susan St. James, Patrick Swayze, Joan Van Ark, George Wendt, Mike Farrel's ex-wife Judy, and Alan Alda's brother Antony & father Robert.

Movie players included Rene Auberjonois, Robert Duvall, Elliott Gould, Sally Kellerman, Donald Sutherland, and Tom Skerritt. Robert Altman directed the movie, and Mike Altman wrote the themesong lyrics.

For Jamie Farr's original acting interview, he played the stereotype of a lisping transvestite. Casting directory Gene Reynolds was disgusted, so Jamie redid his test as the Corporal Klinger we know today.

The character of Spearchucker Jones was dropped during the first season when the writers learned that there were no black surgeons in the Army in Korea (his football game was an important part of the movie). Ho-Jon disappeared without explanation during the first season (in the movie, Ho-Jon was drafted).

Winchester was sent to the 4077 by a Colonel to whom he lost money playing cribbage.

Hawkeye was nicknamed after The Last of the Mohicans, the only book his father ever read.

McLean Stevenson died of a heart attack in 1996.

Malibu Canyon Creek State Park (Fox Ranch) was the outdoor set on which the M*A*S*H TV show was filmed. Twentieth Century-Fox donated the ranch to the State of California while the series was still being filmed. A portion of the park burned down in a brush fire during the filming of the final episode "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen," so the writers worked it into the script.
