Star Trek Ranks
You may jump directly to my sections on Guest Stars
and Trivia.
Or, visit Star Trek:WWW,
or read about Star
Trek Ranks or the Voyager
Crew.
For pictures of Star Trek ribbons, visit GMAN.
Ribbons are the equivalent of medals, worn
The original characters were all promoted in later movies & TV.
The rank graphics are from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The
sleeve insignia for the original series is usually also described.
Note that in the chain of command, Medical Officers (McCoy, Crusher
& Troi) rank very low (below all bridge officers), even though they
hold high ratings.
If you don't recognize someone's name, they're probably from Deep
Space Nine or Voyager.
Admiral
Anyone called "admiral" in Star Trek: The Next Generation has
the Admiral insignia shown above, and is assumed equivalent to 4-star O-10
ADM. The rates Vice Admiral and Rear Admiral are theoretical, and may
or may not actually exist in the world of Star Trek (but if they don't,
then why 3 pips?).
Vice
Admiral (insignia is hypothesized) compare to US
Navy VADM
Rear
Admiral (insignia is hypothesized) compare to US
Navy RADM, originally: thick stripe between 2 gold stripes, or 4 stripes
Commodore
(insignia is hypothesized) compare to US
Navy RDML, originally: 3 stripes
This rating existed in the original series, but it appears to no longer
exist in Star Trek: The Next Generation nor in the movies.
Captain
compare to US Navy CAPT, originally:
1 broken stripe between 2 stripes
In the movies, Kirk was promoted from "captain" to "admiral", so it
is unclear whether his rank was 1-star or 4-star.

Chief
originally: Enterprise Star over chevron with rocker
Assuming "Chief" Miles O'Brien has never been a lieutenant, the half-pip
insignia probably indicates an enlisted rank equivalent to US Navy E7
Chief Petty Officer. O'Brien is inconsistently referred to as "chief
petty officer", "lieutenant", "Lt Jr Grade", and his wife mentions "his
promotion," but I believe his rate is simply "Chief", the highest Star
Fleet enlisted rank.
