When I joined a snail mail penpal club in high school about seven years ago the last thing on my mind was romance. I wanted to meet nice people and make some friends from other cultures. I was totally against LDR's figuring love was hard enough as it was. I did make some great friends as well as meet a couple of freaks I wouldn't approach in a dark alley much less continue to write to:-) Then one day about four years ago I got the description of a guy named Paul living near London. We shared the same interests so I wrote him my standard letter introducing myself, a week later he wrote me back. We exchanged pictures and his was pretty scary but I figured he seemed to be a nice enough guy so I'd stick it out and see whether we could become friends. Over the next year we grew pretty close as we seemed to have more and more in common. He had a great sense of humor and was intelligent and philosophical and I grew very fond of him quickly. He came to visit the following summer and I was so nervous about meeting him, afraid we might not get along face to face but he seemed more nervous than I was, being in a new country and meeting a stranger 3,000 miles away from home and everything, so I focused more on making him feel more comfortable and by the end of the day we were laughing and goofing around as always. The day we met I barely recognized him because while his picture made him look like Frankenstein's brother (it was very dark) he turned out to be INCREDIBLY cute!:-) We found out more about each other in that day than the whole year of letters previously. He became my best friend. Over the next year we grew even closer. We helped each other through hard times, exchanged advice and support and celebrated each other's victories. He visited again for his birthday and stayed for two weeks in which we spent every waking moment together. I found during this visit that I was having more fun with Paul than any other person I'd ever met. He was a Yankee fan so for his birthday I decided to take him to a Yankee game. The morning of the game we went out to breakfast and we were talking and laughing and having a good time as always when suddenly I looked into his deep green eyes and I suddenly became breathless. I couldn't figure it out but the rest of the day I jumped each time he brushed my hand or touched my arm. Then a few days later, after the family and I sang happy birthday to him we hugged and he whispered to me "You're far too good to me" in that adorable English accent of his. Without thinking I kissed him on the cheek and wished him a happy birthday. Although it was a tiny gesture, my heart pounded afterward and I knew I was in trouble. I couldn't be falling for this guy, he was my friend and he lived in another country on the other side of the Atlantic 3,000 miles away! It was impossible and I should stop right where I am now, right? Well, the following day we said our tearful goodbyes and he flew back home. Over the next few months he kept remarking on what a great time he had and how his friends at school kept goofing on him about his "American Girlfriend". It seemed to bother him which completely crushed me and I told him to just let the jests roll off his back. He kept going on about it though as time went on so finally, in a moment of insanity, I wrote him a letter revealing my feelings for him and telling him a girl would be crazy to not want to be his girlfriend. With a last spirt of courage I threw the letter into the mailbox and with my first spirt of cowardice I nearly leaped into the mailbox to get it out. But because I couldn't I sat at home for a week agonizing over what was sure to be a doomed friendship. Well, five days later I got an email from Paul telling me his got my letter and would answer it first thing. I figured he was trying to figure out how to let me down easy. The very next day I get an email from him professing his "undying love" for me and how he was afraid to tell me because he was afraid of dooming the friendship and we decided to take it slow to see where the relationship would go. Well, our love for each other continued to grow, seemeingly with each day, and he turned out to be everything I ever wanted in a man. On Holy Thursday of this year (April 1, 1999) Paul came for a surprise visit because I'd gotten into two car accidents the previous months and was savagely fighting a bout of depression. We went to church and that night sat in the living room to talk while the rest of my family went to sleep. Suddenly he tells me he has something for me and goes to rummage in his suitcase. A few moments later Paul comes back, gets down on one knee and proposes! I thought he was just kidding and nearly dropped dead when he opened a box with a beautiful silver and gold diamond ring! I immediately said yes and almost cried as I found his hand was shaking as he slipped the ring on my finger:-) What amazed me even more was that although we live 3,000 miles away 11 months of the year, Paul STILL managed to figure out my ring size, it was a perfect fit! Well, five months later we're more in love than we've ever been:-) My family adores him and I've met his family for the first time in July and reportedly they love me too:-) We're both dealing with our last years in school and once we both graduate he hope to get married so we can finally be together and our LDR can become and NDR. The two of us endure a LOT of heartache at being apart (and straining wallets from fat phone bills -)but we know everything happens for a reason. The fact that the two of us were born and grew up on opposite ends of the ocean in two totally different cultures, coming from two different backgrounds and having as much in common as we do is a miracle in itself. An even bigger miracle is the fact we found each other over the miles and were united by a piece of paper and a 60 cent stamp! Sometimes I sit and think at how incredible things have turned out and how lucky I am to have been graced with meeting and falling in love with such a charming, loving, sensitive, wonderful and intelligent man who adores me as much as I do him. Long ago I watched a movie called "Only You" with Marissa Tomei and Robert Downey JR. and I saw how much he loved her and thought of how wonderful it would be to be loved liked that. My heart ached and I wished with all the longing in my heart to be loved as greatly as she was... Three years later my wish came true! Remote IP: 199.224.10.224 |
