Books

So far as I know, there are only two books devoted to Mister Ed. They are essential reading for anyone who desires to learn more about the show.

The Famous Mister Ed: The Unbridled Truth About America's Favorite Talking Horse
by Nancy Nalven (318 pages)

Nancy Nalven may be responsible for the lack of Mister Ed books on the market because after reading this one, you may ask yourself if there really is a need for another one. She covers just about every facet of the show including a breakdown of different aspects of Ed's behavior. Nalven conducted interviews with many of the principals alive at the time and included loads of rare pictures of the cast and crew on the set and behind the scenes. There was a lot more info here than I expected.

Mister Ed and Me
by Alan Young (196 pages)

Approximately half of Alan Young's autobiography relates specifically to his Mister Ed years. He relates an insider's view of the show and I found his discussion on Rocky Lane quite interesting. The other half deals with him growing up in Canada, initial struggles before getting his big break in radio, his move to film work then television, his "Post"-Mister Ed years and all the trials and triumphs in between. The book includes many humorous anecdotes about the show and his career. A well written and quick read, my only complaint is that I wish it was longer.
