[A.J.G.]

Here is a nice trap ... that I have caught dozens of victims in.
(In one form or the other.)

 1.e4 c6;  2.d4 d5;  3.Nd2 dxe4;  4.Nxe4 Bf5;  5.Ng3 Bg6;  6.h4 h6;  7.Nf3 Nf6?!;
This looks good, as Black hits center squares, develops a piece and gets ready to castle.

But this move is a common mistake ...
Black had to play 7...Kt-Q2 to guard the vital e5-square against invasion.
(This point clearly illustrates Aaron Nimzovich's concept of square control.)

     [ Much better was:  >/= 7...Nd78.h5 Bh79.Bd3 Bxd310.Qxd3 e6;
       11.Bd2 Qc712.0-0-0 Ngf613.Ne4 0-0-014.g3 Nxe415.Qxe4 Bd6;
       16.c4, "+/="  and White is a little better here.

        A. Karpov - U. Adianto; / Cap d'Agde KO, (1.1); 1998.
        {White won a nice game, 1-0 in forty-four total moves.}   [CG, CB

         [ See also MCO-14, page # 170; column # 01 and all applicable notes,
           especially note # (e.) for this column. ] ]

 8.Ne5! Bh7;  9.Bc4 e6;  10.c3 Bd6;  11.Qe2 Nbd7?;  {Diagram below.}
Black blindly develops.

Black said - after the game - that he planned ...Qc7; ...a6; ...c5; and then he could castle on either wing. Its a good {practical} plan, but it has a tactical hole in it.

     [ >/= 11...Qe7[];  "~"  (Maybe - "+/="') ]

 12.Nxf7! Kxf7;
Black had to capture ... or lose material.

 13.Qxe6+ Kg6;
Now White could regain the piece with QxB/d6, but has bigger game in mind.

     [ Or if: 13...Kf8; then 14.Qf7#. ]

 14.h5#.  {Diagram below.}
A nice opening trap ... ... ...
that illustrates some of the tactical problems that Black must face in the Caro-Kann.
