Product Description
Here is a must-have for all competitive players who prefer to base their game on solid moves rather than speculation, and who want a reliable yet initiative-seeking opening repertoire for White, based on the opening moves 1 d4 followed by 2 c4. Using more than 300 diagrams, an international Grandmaster and regular writer for CHESS magazine analyzes specific main lines and variations to combat Black's possible choices of the King's, Queen's, and Bogoljubow-Indian defenses, as well as the Modern Benoni and Benko Gambit. There are also promising methods against the various Black defenses to the Queen's Gambit, and commentary on the Dutch and Gruenfeld defenses. An excellent and practical opening guide.

About the Author
Richard Palliser is an international master who has recently been given a special British Chess Federation young player's award for achievement. He writes regularly for CHESS magazine and other periodicals and is noted for his theoretical knowledge and analytical ability.

"Super Nezh," Chess Assassin. (IM Rashid Nezhmetdinov) By Alex Pishkin, ICCF Master

To see an excellent review of this book, click here.

Product Description
Rashid Nezhmetdinov was unlike most chess players. Draws were almost an accident, or at the very least, a necessary evil to prevent losing a game which had gone awry. Raised in austere circumstances and learning to play checkers as well as he played chess, he became the Russian chess champion five times. His method was: attack...attack...attack. His ferocity became legendary. World champion Mikhail Tal had become his victim so many times that Nezh became one of his trainers!

Nezh was far more than a giant killer, he produced some games of genius-like creativity, such as the one against Polugaevsky in 1958. He could deliberate for the longest periods of time, over a game which appeared lost, only to finally reveal what he knew all along, that the game was his.

Besides his incessant ability to make deep combinations, he was also a purveyor of opening novelties. His best known line was his 1954 brain-child of creating the (so-called) Poisoned pawn variation of the Najdorf Sicilian; (used later with great success by World Champion Bobby Fischer). His chess, (being a 1. e4 player); embodied the Ruy Lopez, the Sicilian Defense, and the King's Indian Defense.

About the Author
From Syktyvkar, Russia came ICCF-IM Alex Pishkin. Known for his exploits at correspondence chess, Pishkin has several books (Thinkers' press) on Russian players and ex-Soviet masters -- this was his first. The next will be "100 Years of Gladitorial Chess." He had met Nezhmetdinov on several occasions. Unfortunately, Mr. Pishkin died in 1999. May his books live on!

Attacking The King (in the center) by A.J. ("Tony") Gillam

purch_AttckKng-byAGillam.gif, 565 KB

Product Information:
Your opponent's King is more vulnerable to attack while it remains in the center of the board, hence the (reason for) early castling - to remove the King to a safer position. But conditions during the early moves (of a game) often precludes castling, and proper early development of one's pieces can provide the strength to take advantage of the weaker King's position. Here are 141 games illustrating attacks against such a King, with numerous diagrams to assist in following the attacking moves. The notes clearly explain the flow of the attack for the developing player. The author emphasizes the message to enjoy yourself! A quick attack against the opponent's King is a source of constant enjoyment, and here - in this book - are the ways to accomplish this. ( - Derived from the back cover.)

"Pawn Structure Chess," by GM Andy Soltis

purch_PSC01 - by Soltis.gif, 10 KB

purch_PSC02 - by Soltis.gif, 20 KB

See my review of this book on Amazon

Some 250 years ago, the great Philidor wrote, "The pawns are the soul of chess." Although that statement is perhaps the most common cliche in the literature of the game, it is too often misunderstood.

Pawns are usually considered weak because of their limited range of movement. But the pawns' restricted mobility is precisely what makes them so important strategically: they form a semi-permanent structure -- often called a "pawn skeleton" -- that establishes the territorial lines of the coming battle and thus the nature of the battle itself. Understanding how pawns affect strategy is the subject of this important book. In it you will learn:
how to handle the characteristic pawn structure of each opening "family" and each major variation
how to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of pawn chains
when to exchange pawns in the center -- and when not to
how to cramp your opponent's position and what to do if your opponent cramps yours
how to create and exploit pawn "holes"... and much, much more, all copiously illustrated by complete games from actual play.

Andrew Soltis is a grandmaster and a chess columnist for New York Post and Chess Life. In 1988, he was named chess journalist of the year by the Chess Journalists of America.
