Chapter 27
"Ryan I would like you to meet my mother. Mom this is Ryan, my ex-husband. Ryan this is my mother, Lucy Coe." Lynne said.
"I thought that Jannette was your mother, Lynne?" Ryan said confused.
"I told you I was adopted many times. Jannette is my adoptive mother. True she is the one who raised me, but Lucy is my biological mother."
Lucy smiled at her daughter. But when she looked at Ryan, her facial expression changed dramatically. She was furious.
"Ryan how could you do that to her? You are supposed to be loyal and cherish the one that you marry. Why couldn't you be more like your brother?"
"Mother!"
Lynne was astonished at the way her mother was protecting her. She was just suprised. She had to admit she liked having her mommy back her up.
"Bethany this is something I have to do. You could have talked to Lynne about the problem. Oh no that would have been too easy! You chose to cheat on her and you caused her to miscarry my granddaughter! What possessed you to do this? Was it something she did? Or do we just have another Bill Clinton on our hands?" Lucy said as her voice rose with every word she said."ANSWER ME RYAN!"
It was all Lynne could do not to cheer her mother on. She was doing a heck of a job on Ryan. Lynne would never have been able to confront Ryan like this. She was more compassionate and reserved. She loved Lucy for doing what she was doing. She just wished that she would have the fire that Lucy did when she was Lucy's age.
"Alright!! I had just about had enough of Lynne's dream to have a baby. I needed to get away. I told the woman that I was happily married and that I could not have an affair. But she seduced me and I succumbed to it. I admit that I was responsible for Lynne loosing Janelle Alison. That is what I was coming to talk to her about. I wanted to reconcile and try again."
"GET OUT!" Lucy said."AND DON'T COME ANYWHERE NEAR MY DAUGHTER AGAIN!"
Later that day, while Lucy was on the phone with Felicia, Lynne decided to pay her great-aunt Charlene a visit. She left a note that read...
Mom,
Going to see Great-Aunt Charlene. Don't worry. I can handle myself. I will call you when I leave. Maybe we can meet at Kelley's for dinner.
Love,
Bethany-Lynne
After she wrote the note and put it in a place where Lucy could see it, she was out the door. She really hoped that Lucy understood that she had to do this. The thing that bothered Lynne was that she was afraid of Charlene.
About ten minutes later, she was at the door of Charlene's hotel room. She knocked and waited. After what seemed like hours, a young man answered the door. She asked if Charlene was there, the young man said she was and invited Lynne in.
"Decker, who is that at the door?"
"This young woman. She was asking for you, mom." Decker said.
"You must be Lucy's Aunt Charlene. And you must be her younger cousin, Decker Simpson." Lynne said. She could not wait to drop the bombshell that she was the little baby that Charlene had given up.
"Yes, I am Charlene Simpson. And you are?"
"I am Bethany-Lynne Coe. Your Grand-Neice that you had put up for adoption about 21 years ago." Lynne said."You and I have somethings to talk about Charlene. Free now?"
"As a matter of fact I am. What is it you wanted to talk about." Charlene asked.
Lynne was not buying this act that Charlene was giving her. She knew that Charlene knew why she was there. So did Decker for that matter.
"Charlene! You know damn well why I am here! You lied to my mother about me being alive. Why did you tell her I was dead? She did not deserve that. You should have told her the truth!!"
"Little girl you don't understand. Lucy was only 18 when you were born. She could not have given you the life you deserved..." Charlene began.
"How do you know that to be true? You did not let her try to be a mother to me. Maybe what it was is that you weren't ready for Lucy to be a mother! True, she probably wasn't but that was not her fault! I was created from a rape. I know that now and while I don't like what my father did, I have come to accept it and so has Lucy."
"Lucy loved you when she found out about you Bethany. I was the only one that stood by her during the pregnancy." Decker said."Colton and mom thought that she hadn't been raped but had given her consent to the intimacy."
Turning to Decker, Lynne smiled. "I read the letters Mom wrote to me. I am grateful to you for sticking by her during that time. I understand you are my Godfather. Did you know my dad, Decker?"
"No I did not. I am sorry Bethany. I tried to stay out of Luce's personal life. She told me about him but I did not listen until she showed up pregant. I have always been nice to her. She trusted me." Decker confessed.
"Do you have a picture of her when she was a senior in high school? I would like to see what she looked like back then." Lynne asked.
"I do but it is back in Jennings. I will send it to you when we get back there." Decker said.
"Thanks. Now I know why Mom loved you so much Decker. I have to go now. Nice meeting you Decker. Good-bye Charlene."
"Bethany wait a minute. There is something that you should know about Mom. She only did what was right for her not for your mom. Your mom loved you. I wish I could say the same for mine."
Lynne was taken aback. She thought that from the way Lucy described it that Charlene favored Decker and Colton over her.
"I thought that Charlene didn't like my mom very much from the way she described her childhood."
Decker was interested in Lynne's curiosity about her mom's past. He decided that she should know everything.
"You wanna go to the Grille downstairs and talk about your mom and her childhood?"
"Sure. But I am on-call tonight, but they will page me if they need me. By the way call me Lynne or Ly. Bethany is too formal."
"Okay, Lynne. Let's go. I cannot wait to learn about you. We have alot to catch up on."
"Yes we do." Lynne said."Yes we do."
Chapter 28
Lucy was a mess. She could not believe that Lynne thought she could face Charlene on her own. True she was a big girl but to Lucy she was still a baby. She decided to call Kevin and ask his advice.
Ring,
Ring,
Ring,
After five more rings she heard the following message coming from Kevin's voicemail...
''You have reached the office of Dr. Kevin Collins. I am either with a patient or out of the office. Please leave a message and your phone number and I will call you back as soon as I can.''
''Hi, Doc! It's Lucy. I need to talk to you about Lynne. She is seeing Aunt Charlene and I wanted to be there with her. I know, I know, she is not a baby she is a big girl. Well anyway call me back soon!'' Lucy said into the phone and then hung up.''Doc make it sooner than later!''
Across town at the Port Charles Grille Lynne and Decker are waiting for their orders and discussing Lucy's childhood.
''Decker? Is it true that my mom was born out of wedlock, just like me?''
''Whoa! When you want information you don't waste anytime do you? Yes, she was. Mom took care of her and your Aunt Lynnette and Emily more often than your grandparents did. Mom didn't mind. She actually liked the girls. Colton liked Lynnette and Emily okay but there was something about Lucy that he did not like and I do not know what that is.'' Decker said.
''I have heard about Aunt Lynnette and Aunt Emily. Do they know I am alive or do they believe I am dead too?'' Lynne asked.
She really didn't want to know and was afraid of what Decker's answer would be.
''Mom was so good at covering her tracks that everyone except her and Jannette and Daniel thought you were dead.'' Decker said sadly.''I sorta had a gut feeling that you might have survived but I did not want to mention it to Lucy because of what my mom told her.''
There was still something missing to this puzzle that she called her life. To fit the missing peice into place she had to ask more questions even if Decker did not know the answers, she could take comfort in the fact that someone cared about Lucy before Kevin entered her life.
''Decker?''
''Yeah?''
''When you said that Charlene took care of my mom and her sisters more than her own parents what do you mean by that? I mean why did she have to do that?'' Lynne asked again afraid of the answer she would get.
''This is going to be hard for you to grasp right now Lynne, but your grandparents were very mean to Lucy and her sisters. Her mother killed herself on the night Lucy graduated from high school.'' Decker said remembering that aweful night.
''Did mom ever show you the letters she wrote to me?''
''Yeah, she did. I helped her through that. Colton did not give a d@mn about Lucy. In fact Charlene and Colton wanted Lucy to abort you. She would not allow that. Lucy knew you were brought here for a reason and so did I..still do as a matter of fact.''
Lynne just grinned at him.
When Kevin got back to his office, the first thing he noticed was that his voice mail light was blinking. He had a sneeking suspicion as to who it was, but since he loved hearing her voice he did not mind listening to the message.
After he pressed the code to access his voice mail, he had to listen to the ever-familiar female voice telling him that he had a message. When the machine beeped Lucy's voice filled the office, it was the most wonderful sound he had heard so far that day....
''Hi Doc! It's Lucy. I need to talk to you about Lynne. She is seeing Aunt Charlene and I wanted to be there with her. I know, I know she is not a baby she is a big girl. Well anyway call me back soon.''
After the message ended Kevin dialed Lucy's number....
Ring,
Ring,
''Hello? This is Lucy Coe.''
''Hello beautiful.'' Kevin said.''You called my voice mail earlier what is the problem sweetness?''
''If you listened to your voice mail message you would know that it was about Lynne.'' Lucy sqeeked.''She went to see Charlene. By herself I might add. Am I being a little too protective?''
Kevin smiled.
''No not at all. You are just concerned about her emotional well being. I would do the same thing if my child was meeting my mother.''
Lucy laughed. But Kevin knew that as soon as she knew more about Marcia she would know that he was NOT kidding.
''Are you free? I really need to see you for some therapy of my own. If you know what I mean! If you don't know what I mean, I am on my way to show you. But let's meet at the Port Charles Grile and eat first.''
''Now, WHY did you pick that particular place, Lucy? Could it be that Lynne is there or could be there? Really subtle there Lucy.''
Kevin would soon learn that subtlety was not Lucy's strong suit. She was just the opposite.
''See you in about ten minutes, Doc?'' Lucy grinned KNOWING that Kevin would give in.
''Alright, but if we see Ly, we leave her alone, agreed? That is the only way I will go with you.''
''Agreed.'' Lucy said and hung up the phone. She grinned. NOW she would have a reasonable excuse to go to the Grille!
Decker was a smart man of 27 years, but he could not for the life of him figure out what Lynne was thinking. He hoped that she was not attracted to him. They were family for crying out loud. If she were attracted to him, that would give new meaning to the phrase, ''kissin' cousins.''
''Whatcha thinking, Lynne?''
''Oh. I was just thinking about my life. When I was 7 years old, Jannette told me that I was adopted right after I was born.'' Lynne said.
''How did you take the news?''
''I was angry at first but then I just leaned to accept it and there was nothing I could do about it. Well at least at 7 years of age anyway.''
''What changed?''
''When I got pregnant with Ryan's child, I could not tell the doctor my medical history because I did not know it. She gave me this look as if she were sorry that I was adopted when in reality the adoption was the best thing that could have happend to me. Mom was too young. ''
