Limpsfield Amenities and Local Attractions
Limpsfield's principal amenity and local attraction is in the beautiful countryside within the parish and surrounding it. Much of the area is now preserved by the National Trust and/or classified as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, while Limpsfield Village is itself in a Conservation Area. Being relatively close to London, yet set in the heart of beautiful countryside, the area has its share of magnificent views and houses, as well as being steeped in history.
Some specific attractions in Limpsfield and nearby
include: Limpsfield Common an area of
natural woodland and grassland preserved
for posterity by the National Trust; Titsey Place - the home of the
Lords of the Manor of Limpsfield; Chartwell - Sir Winston Churchill's
home in a beautiful setting, now also looked after by the National Trust
(five miles from Limpsfield); Hever Castle historic home of the Boleyn
family - the most famous of whom, Anne, did not survive her marriage to King
Henry VIII. Hever was more recently owned by the Astor family and the
castle and its beautiful grounds are now open to the public (seven miles
from Limpsfield). Penshurst Place, ancient home of the de L'isle
family (nine miles). Staffhurst Wood,
an ancient area of woodland within the Parish, is almost completely carpeted
with bluebells in late-April which makes an already extremely attractive
area outstandingly beautiful. A 'Bluebell Service' is held at the tiny
church there at this time every year.
Local amenities include good shopping, a cinema and railway station with direct trains to London (35 minutes) in neighbouring Oxted (the foot of Oxted's principal shopping street actually lies inside the Limpsfield Parish boundary), two golf courses - Limpsfield Chart and Tandridge (at Oxted). For the sporting minded, Limpsfield and Limpsfield Chart both have cricket teams, Limpsfield has its own soccer club, while Oxted also has cricket, rugby, soccer and hockey clubs. Limpsfield has an extremely well-supported tennis/squash/badminton club while Oxted also has its own tennis club. Hurst Green which abuts Limpsfield to the South has a good athletics club. Walkers are well catered for with numerous footpaths criss-crossing the area including the famous North Downs Way, the Pilgrims Way and the Greensand Way and some tremendous views of unspoilt countryside.
The above only represents brief coverage of what is available in the area. To experience its true charm and beauty you need to visit it.
