Joss Whedon and a host of esteemed creators tackle the history of Slayers past (and future!) in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales of the Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the latest in a long tradition of young women who've been trained to give their lives in the war against vampires. Fans have gotten glimpses of these other women over the years on the cult hit television show, in comics, and in books. Now for the first time, the writers from the television series, including the show's creator, Joss Whedon, and one of its stars, Amber "Tara" Benson, present the tales of these girls in an all-new original graphic novel, with the help of some of comics' greatest artists.
Gene Colan, co-creator of Marvel's Blade and Tomb of Dracula, returns to Dark Horse for the story of a young girl in 1970s New York, battling vampires. Tim Sale, artist of recent epics Batman: The Long Halloween and Superman for All Seasons teams with Joss Whedon for a grim tale of a medieval slayer. American comics legend P. Craig Russell (Dr. Strange, The Ring of the Nibelung), international rising star Mira Friedmann (Actus Tragicus), and Buffy TV scribe Jane Espenson also join the stellar lineup.

"What could be more cool than a look into the history of the Slayers, by the TV show's writers themselves?," said editor Scott Allie. "These writers took to comics like fish to water -- you can read the novels, you can read the reference books, but Dark Horse is the only place outside the TV series itself where you can see Buffy's world expanded on by Joss and the writers he works with every day. And where else can you see such a diverse array of legendary and award-winning artists? This one kinda has it all."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales of the Slayer is a completely original graphic novel collection of some of the best Slayer stories ever written. This star-studded, 96-page, full-color collection will be on sale starting November 14 for the retail price of $14.95.

Dec. 2001:

Fabian Nicieza

Fabian Nicieza writes Buffy

Fabian Nicieza has written his first Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics story for Dark Horse Comics.

"It's a one-shot called The Lost & Found and is set between the end of last season and the start of this one, when Buffy was dead," Nicieza told The Continuum "It's Dawn's point of view as the Scoobies try to figure out exactly who they should be, etc."

Here's how Dark Horse describes the book:

"Buffy's dead. Her friends are trying to get on with their lives. Between them, there is enough anger, frustration, loss, guilt and tragedy to drown an ocean.or resurrect an ancient demon. Sunnydale being what it is means things aren't looking too good for the Scoobies. A lovelorn demon has been set free into our dimension, and its food is the grief of Buffy's nearest and dearest."

Art is by Cliff Richards, Joe Pimentel and Will Conrad. The book is due in stores on March 13.

Lee & Loeb together on Batman

This past year, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada and his henchman Bill Jemas have had their mouth full about how they revived the comic industry. Some of their favourite techniques were:

- Throwing popular writers off their books (Claremont, Weinberg...).
- Getting the most vulgar writers you can find to work for the House of Ideas.
- Giving every underground artist you had never heard of his own Marvel book.
- Getting rid of talented writers and artists.
- Breaking with Marvel history and continuity (after all, it is a concept too difficult for their new writers).
- Making it clear they no longer want anything to do with long time readers and fans.
- Slowly rising the price on all their titles.
- Creating multiple versions of every character.
- Launching a so-called adult line (read a line of books for those people who don't seem to have discovered hentai yet and who don't know there's all kind of sites on the internet). I also wonder, does this mean all the other books are meant for kiddies?
- Turning Marvel into a copy of Vertigo.
- Destroying the X-titles.
- Screwing up most of their titles and characters (with the exception of Spider-Man... although I do wonder what happened to his baby and the fact that Peter and M.J. used to be married).
- ...

Now, this October DC takes a slightly different approach to things by taking a talented writer (Jeph Loeb) who's familiar with continuity and one of the best art teams (Jim lee & Scott Williams) in the business and putting them together on their most popular character, Batman. I don't know about you, but this Marvel Zombie is getting more and more interested in the Distinguished Competition. At least they still seem to care about fans over there...

F.A.C.T.S. 2002

This October, get ready for the 12th edition of Europe's Fantasy Anime Comics Toys & Space convention. Geez... I still remember when I first went to this convention many years ago. It was their second edition back then. Things have changed much since. Unfortunately, not all for the better. for example, I'm a little disappointed the price went up once again and that there's no special 2-day fare. Still, if you live in the Benelux, this convention is a must!
