Thursday 11 a.m. Helen's office
The door flings open, and an agitated Bobby, storms in throwing an envelope on Helen's desk. "What do you know about this?" he shouts then watches, amused, as Helen tries to compose the perfect response. Helen is thinking why does Lindsay always get her into these situations. She realizes it is one of her letters and is a little reluctant to admit her guilt fearing his reaction. She's is a little frightened by Bobby's obvious outrage. She fears her little joke may be about to backfire on her. After Lindsay's distress last week she'd decided to let the matter drop and hadn't sent any more letters. She was hoping it would be something that would just be forgotten by all involved. Obviously that isn't going to happen as Bobby is here shoving one of the letters down her throat and angrily questioning her involvement. It's all Lindsay's fault she thinks petulantly before responding to Bobby's question.
"I'm sorry Bobby it was just a silly joke," she begins trying to calm him down.
"A joke! Some joke! I don't find my wife sleeping around very funny Helen."
Helen quickly tries to recall what she wrote in the letter. When she is sure there was nothing in it that could have given Bobby that impression she screams, "What the hell are you talking about?"
He counters with "What are you talking about?"
She pauses as she considers her options. Lying would be good she thinks at least until I know what's going on. "Nothing. Just something silly I said to Richard that I thought might have got back to you. What about you? Why'd you say Lindsay is sleeping around?"
"Because she is."
"Oh come on that's ridiculous! You can't really believe that."
"I do!"
They stare at one another both challenging the other to back down. When Helen realizes Bobby isn't going to she shouts, "You must be out of your mind. Lindsay cheating on you! No way! What could possibly make you say something ridiculous like that?"
"She's developed a fascination for Eddie Bauer catalogues. You know the rugged look."
Helen laughs. That certainly wasn't the answer she'd expected.
"I'm not an idiot Helen!" he says angrily.
"I never said you were. I sure as hell was thinking it but I never said you were." Seeing he isn't amused she continues "Bobby Lindsay's idea of a rugged man is you with a five o'clock shadow. Me on the other hand I don't mind a bit of caveman every now and then."
"You don't mind a bit of any man every now and then."
"Did you come here to talk to me or to abuse me?"
"Fine answer me one question."
"Fine"
"How many times did you have lunch with Lindsay last week?"
Helen doesn't like being put on the spot like that. She's not sure what she is getting herself into so instead of answering she asks, "How many times did she say we did?"
Bobby jumps up and starts pacing angrily around the office ranting "I should have known you'd do this. I should have known you'd back her no matter what. If I'd done what she's doing you'd be first in line to attack me but I guess it's ok for her to do anything she wants."
"Bobby I'm not backing her on anything. I don't know what she's supposedly done to get you so upset. What are you talking about?"
Bobby sits back down and firmly repeats the question. "How many times did you have lunch with Lindsay last week?"
Helen decides total honesty is the only way to go. "Technically none. We did have plans one day but she canceled on me." She was upset because you two were fighting and she wanted time on her own Helen thinks but doesn't say not wanting to aggravate Bobby.
"She told me you had lunch together three times last week."
"And from this you're making the ridiculous assumption she's having an affair. Bobby she could have been doing anything. Maybe she was buying you a birthday present."
"Six months early? And give me some credit Helen I have more evidence than just that."
Helen waves her hand at him encouraging him to go on.
"For the last two months the phone rings but when I answer it whoever it is hangs up."
"So?"
"So they never hang up if she answers. Everyone knows that is a sure sign of someone cheating."
Helen can't help laughing "Bobby the only thing that's a sure sign of is you're delusional."
Bobby doesn't respond. He stares at her until she gives the impression she's prepared to listen to him and take what he says seriously. She takes a calming breath and begins "Bobby..." but he interrupts her.
"There's more Helen. I caught her on the phone with him."
"What?" Helen is fascinated by this comment. It's the first bit of interesting information she's heard all morning.
"I was supposed to be working late but I came home early to surprise her. I heard her laughing in the bedroom and when I went in she was on the phone. She hung up as soon as I entered the room, she claimed she was talking to you but she was aroused. I know my wife and I know when she's aroused so, unless your relationship isn't what I've been told it is all these years, she wasn't talking to you."
"As you've just reminded me Bobby I have my hands full enough with all the men in my life but if I do turn you'll be the first to know." Bobby doesn't respond, instead he continues to stare at Helen, goading her into a further response. "Ok maybe it was me I don't know. Maybe she was talking to me about you. She does that you know. She talks about you all the time, all day everyday it's Bobby this Bobby that. I can't wait to hear what she has to say about this."
Bobby needs to control his desire to grin and thinks to himself I can't wait to hear what Lindsay has to say about that either. He's looking forward to teasing her about talking about him 'all' the time. He doesn't say anything though as he's enjoying watching Helen squirm.
"You are jumping to a mighty big conclusion there Bobby. I don't think that proves a thing."
"I found a note."
"What?"
"There was a note in her jacket pocket. It said... ", Bobby's face screws up as if it hurts to say these words, "It said meet me at seven. I love you. And it was signed with an A. I confronted her about it. Do you know what she said?"
"What?"
"She said the dry cleaner must have put it there by mistake. How pathetic is that for a lie. You and I both know Lindsay can't lie when she feels strongly about something. Impersonal stuff yeah she can bluff with the best of them but the more important something is to her, the more ridiculous the lie she uses to cover it."
Helen can't argue with that. She called Lindsay on it when Lindsay said she didn't think it was a good idea for Helen to date Bobby because she had concerns for the firm. Lindsay's inability to lie well when emotion is involved has always amused her in the past.
"I went looking after I found that note" Bobby continues "and I found a key. It was in one of those powder thingies."
"In a what?" Helen asks amused but trying not to show it.
"You know what I mean. Those things with powder and that squishy thing and a mirror I don't know what they're called." Actually he knows exactly what they're called. It said compact on the script Lindsay gave him to memorize but Bobby feels he's got this under control and can afford to ad lib a little. It's not like Lindsay will ever find out.
"You mean a compact."
"Yeah, whatever, she was hiding a key in one." Bobby picks the letter up off the desk and hands it to Helen. "Then I found that." Helen pretends to read it. It's the long letter she sent to Lindsay. She looks up occasionally at Bobby, pulling confused but unconcerned faces at him, trying to suggest she sees it as just an innocent letter certainly nothing sinister or suspicious at all. Bobby finds it difficult to control his urge to laugh. So he stands and paces as if fraught with emotion. He reminds himself how mad at him Lindsay will be if he mucks this up and it helps control his laughter. Helen doesn't know what to say. She doesn't want to get into the details of the letter right now. She especially doesn't think this is a good time to admit that she is Alan Hammel. She sighs unsure what to say and begins with a gentle "Bobby"
He turns to face her and with tears threatening to escape says, "I think it's him. You know him Helen could it be him?"
"Bobby I can one hundred percent guarantee it isn't him."
"You're sure?"
"Absolutely!"
"Dammit!" he shouts and paces the room "At least if it was then I had a name, a place to start now ... now I've got nothing. I need to know who he is Helen. I need to know."
She sits quietly for a moment. Helen trying to process everything Bobby has just said. She finds it hard to believe that it could be true. Lindsay wouldn't cheat on Bobby would she? No! Of course not!
"Bobby I don't even believe there is a him. You can't really believe that either. This is Lindsay we are talking about."
"You think I want to believe it Helen? I've spent the last two months denying it, hoping she'd just stop but I can't any longer it's gone too far." Then quietly he says, "It gets worse."
Helen looks at him, encouraging him to speak but afraid of what she is about to hear.
"I have to go out of town this weekend. I want her to come with me and she won't. I've known about this trip for a while, so has she, I'd always assumed we'd go together but now she refuses to go. I'm afraid to ask myself why."
"She loves you." It's the only thing Helen can think to say.
"Maybe she used to. I just don't know anymore. We always seem to fight. Helen if she can do this to me can she really love me?"
That's a good question Helen thinks to herself but she still doubts Lindsay is actually doing what Bobby is suggesting, again she says, "She loves you!"
"I don't know what I did wrong. She did warn me constantly she needed more sex and I tried, I really did, but I never thought she'd go elsewhere to get it. She's insatiable Helen I don't think any man could keep up with her but I tried. No one could have tried harder. I loved her so much."
Helen is so busy trying to recover from the idea of Lindsay being a sex maniac that his last statement almost slipped past her.
"Loved her? No Bobby! Love her! You love her, I know you do and she loves you. I don't know what's going on but I'm sure it's just some misunderstanding. You need to be talking to her not me. You two need to talk about this."
"I've tried but she just shuts me down. I'm afraid to fight with her. I don't want to push her away. I don't want to lose her. I'm scared Helen. What can I do?"
"Bobby this has to be a misunderstanding. Let me talk to her. You have to be wrong about this. You have to be."
"I hope."
"I'll talk to her" Helen assures him. He nods. Bobby stays for another half an hour or so and Helen uses the time to convince him it cannot possibly be true. She promises him by the time he arrives home on Monday it will all be sorted out. She still can't believe it is true but if it is she'll spend the weekend knocking some sense into Lindsay's head.
Friday 2 p.m. Courthouse
Having tried unsuccessfully to speak to Lindsay all yesterday afternoon, Helen has decided to ambush her today. She's been in the back of the courtroom waiting for a chance to catch Lindsay. When the judge calls an hour recess she has her chance.
"Lindsay I was beginning to think you'd left town" Helen says as she approaches Lindsay's table.
"Sorry about that" Lindsay laughs "I've been busy you know how it is."
"Not really why don't you tell me about it."
Lindsay gives Helen a weird look then says "Look Helen I have to go we'll catch up later."
"How about we do something tonight? I'll go with you to take Bobby to the airport and then we'll go somewhere from there."
"Oh I'm not taking him he's getting a cab."
"Ok so what do you want to do?"
"I've already got plans for tonight. Can we talk about this later?" Lindsay has finished packing her briefcase and is now hurrying out of the room. Helen is practically running to keep up with her she's determined she won't let her get away until she has her agree to meet with her.
"Is it anything I can join in on?" Helen asks.
"You wish" Lindsay mouths inaudibly before saying "Sorry Helen I really don't think so. Look I'm busy, I don't have time right now, so I'll talk to you Monday, ok? Bye"
Lindsay hurries away and Helen stands there a little shell-shocked thinking 'Monday, as in don't bother me for the whole weekend? I think not!' She realizes it's not going to be as easy to find out what's going on as she'd originally thought. 'Time for drastic measures' she thinks and goes to her office to make plans.
6.30 p.m. outside Bobby and Lindsay's apartment
Helen is sitting in her car watching the apartment. She followed Lindsay home from work and is now waiting to see what she's going to do for the night. She wants to see for herself just what exactly these plans of Lindsay's are. She's curious to see if Lindsay goes somewhere or if someone comes to see her. Just before seven a cab pulls up outside the building. Helen, who had been becoming bored and had almost decided to go home, is rejuvenated by the thought finally there might be some action. Bobby comes out of the apartment with a suitcase and gets into the cab but not before looking disappointedly up at the apartment. "Gee Lindsay you could have at least come down with him to say goodbye," Helen thinks. Barely ten minutes have passed since Bobby's cab left before Helen spots Lindsay's car pulling out of the parking garage. "Well, well, well, what have we here?" she says as she begins to follow at a discreet distance.
Had Lindsay not been expecting to see Helen and looking for her she would have missed her. "You're good at this stealth business Helen," she thinks. Lindsay drives very slowly knowing it will be bugging Helen who is always such a speed demon. There is an ulterior motive though, she wants to guarantee Bobby has enough time to get to his father's and get changed into his disguise before meeting her at the cinema. Lindsay is still amazed Bobby has agreed to do all this. She was sure he would draw the line at dressing up in disguise but he seems to be as keen on it all as she is. She is a little annoyed at him though, as he wouldn't give her a sneak preview of him in it, he just kept assuring her yes it does all fit very nicely thankyou very much. She smiles trying to picture Bobby in his hiking boots, faded jeans and flannel shirt. Just the type of rugged manly man Helen found so dangerous and appealing in college but it is so unlike Bobby she just laughs every time she tries to picture him like that. Especially when she adds the dark blonde curly wig and wire-framed glasses he will also be wearing. Nope the image it creates is definitely not her Bobby. She's worried he won't be able to pull the look off. She needs him to look convincing. Helen is not stupid and won't be fooled by a lousy disguise. Lindsay's original plan had involved having a friend play the part of her mystery lover but Bobby had insisted he could do it. He assured her they could be more convincing if it was him as this way she wouldn't need to act so it would look so much more natural and real to anyone looking on. "Besides" he had added "I don't want my wife running around all weekend with another guy even if I do know it's for a good cause." Lindsay had agreed he did have a good point. She hadn't intended to kiss the other guy but now, if it's Bobby, she can give Helen a really good show. She's laughing to herself as she drives into the cinema complex's carpark. She parks her car and gets out making an exaggerated gesture of looking around searching for someone. She sighs as if bitterly disappointed then gets back into the car and pretends to make a phone call. She has an animated conversation on her cell phone then gets out of the car and walks grumpily towards the cinema.
Helen watches Lindsay's little performance and is secretly pleased to note all doesn't seem to be going well. 'I guess we can't have our cake and eat it too' Helen smugly says before she immediately feels guilty realizing she's condemned Lindsay before she has any real proof, other than Bobby's probably delusional suspicions, Lindsay has done anything wrong. Who knows she could just be meeting a friend tonight, a female friend. She's my best friend she deserves the benefit of the doubt Helen thinks. "Yeah right" she says, "That's why I'm spying on her." Her little guilt trip lasts all of thirty seconds before she gets out of the car and follows Lindsay into the cinema.
She stands outside and watches through the glass door as Lindsay purchases a ticket and then walks into cinema two. Helen then enters the complex and walking up to the ticket counter asks for a ticket for cinema two.
"Do you mean for the star wars movie marathon" the ticket seller asks.
"What!" Helen says horrified, she's going to kill Lindsay for this "I mean for whatever is showing in cinema two."
"Exactly, the star wars movie marathon, four non stop star wars movies."
"Fine whatever" Helen pays for the ticket amazed she's actually handing money over for it. 'Lindsay isn't interested in star wars,' she thinks 'what on earth is she up to?'
"May the force be with you." The ticket seller says as he hands Helen her change.
She turns on him shouting, "What the hell did you just say to me?"
"It's from the movie" he squeaks defensively "They make us say it to everyone who buys a ticket."
Helen stares at him warily and then decides he's probably telling the truth. She walks away. He sits down his legs suddenly too weak to hold him up.
Helen sneaks into the cinema careful not to be seen by Lindsay. She notices Lindsay sitting by herself in a center row. Helen decides to sit in the back row where she can watch Lindsay without being seen. Suddenly she feels a hand on her arm and hears a man say her name. She looks behind her and recognizes Ed Chambers who she went to high school with. Ed's one of those people that, once they get a hold of you, never let go. He's nice but he's so boring. He works in her local video store and she's been avoiding him ever since she and Lindsay moved in together. She can't believe she's actually been unlucky enough to bump into him here. If she wasn't already planning on killing Lindsay, she would be for this.
"You meeting someone?" he asks.Helen, who has so much going on in her mind at the moment she's not thinking too clearly, makes the mistake of answering honestly. "No I'm not"
"Oh good we can sit together" Ed guides her into the middle of the back row and then sits down next to her blocking her exit "I didn't know you liked star wars Helen."
"I don't!""Then why are you here?"
'That's a good question' Helen thinks to herself "Seemed like the thing to do." She says with a wry smile.
Ed laughs "You always were a little bit crazy Helen that's what I always liked about you."
'Help. Help. Help.' Helen chants to herself. 'I cannot sit through four movies with this man. The Indiana Jones trilogy now that's a different story but star wars, no I can't do it!' To amuse her self, while she tries to work out what Lindsay is up to, she watches the other people arriving in the cinema, giving only the occasional non committal response to her eager companion. She's horrified as she watches her row fill up trapping her in a barrier of people. Star Wars fans too she thinks with a shudder. Her sense of claustrophobia is almost unbearable. Suddenly her attention is caught though by a nice firm behind, beautifully encased in faded denim, walking down the aisle. "Mmmm mmm mm cute buns" she says to herself.
She's always had a soft spot for a well filled out pair of jeans and those are certainly a well filled out pair of jeans. She watches them, mouth watering, as they walk forward in long even purposeful strides. Her breath catches as she suspects their destination. He's stopped at Lindsay's row and is now making his way towards her. Thoughts start rushing through her head. That must be the guy. There really is a guy. Lindsay is cheating on Bobby. Lindsay is cheating on Bobby with a superstud. Kill me now. Why the hell didn't she introduce him to me? He's the epitome of my dream guy not hers. She never liked that type. He's my type. What the hell is she doing with him? Where did she find him? What the hell is she doing? What does she think she's doing? Does he have a friend? How could she do this to Bobby?
Bobby slides into the seat next to Lindsay. She is about to tell him the seat is taken when she realizes it's Bobby. With his blond curly hair, glasses and dressed in clothes unlike any she's seen him wear before she barely recognized him. She gasps and says without meaning to "God you look cute like that!"
"I don't know whether to be pleased or offended by that" he chuckles.
She laughs "What I mean is you look ... teddy bear cute, amusing cute, not ... I want to tear your clothes off and feast off you cute, like you normally do."
He grins. "I don't know whether to be pleased or offended by that."
She smiles at him and then whispers into his ear "Did you see Helen?"
"Yeah she's at the back with a very attentive companion. She appears to be having a delightful time."
"She's going to kill me."
"Yeah and my dad wants a word with you too."
"You make it sound serious."
"It is. He's concerned why his son suddenly feels the need to play dress ups. The clothes were bad enough but when I put the wig on it totally freaked him out. He doesn't believe it's your idea he thinks I'm going through a mid life crisis."
"I'll speak to him." Lindsay laughs "So Ed is being very attentive is he?"
"Yeah I heard him offer to show Helen his light saber and take her to a galaxy far far away."
Lindsay rolls her eyes at him and he sheepishly says "Ok I didn't hear him say that but he is jumping around like an eager puppy back there and Helen looks as if she's afraid he'll pee on her."
She swats his arm "Bobby that's disgusting."
"You sure he won't tell her you organized this?"
"Positive! He's not that bright but he can follow instructions."
"It's a wonder you didn't marry him then" Bobby teases.Lindsay laughs just as the lights dim completely in the cinema and the movie begins. "Time for the show" she whispers conspiratorially to him."I'm ready if you are" he challenges then grins, running his fingers through his hair, "Just don't touch the hair."
"I'll try to control myself" she answers drolly.
"Yeah that's what they all say," he says smugly
"Ten minutes" she warns "sit there and behave yourself for ten minutes and then you have my permission to misbehave."
Holding up his watch Bobby begins to count down the minutes.
Lindsay shaking her head in mock annoyance pretends to ignore him. She can't help, every now and then, sneaking a peek at him, amused and amazed by his appearance.Nine minute's and fifty two seconds later Bobby does the old yawn and stretch move accidentally on purpose allowing his hand to slip from the back of her chair past her shoulder to her breast. "Oops" he whispers. He's pleased with his ability to have behaved for that long.
Giggling Lindsay grabs his arm and snuggles up to it "You are pathetic" she teases.
"But you love me anyway" comes a voice too sure of itself for it's own good.
She cannot lie to him though and says "Very much."
Suddenly a hot mouth surrounds her ear "Want to make out?"
"Oh God" Lindsay laments "I knew this was a bad idea. You've reverted back to your teenage years".
"C'mon Lindsay tell me the truth, you've always wanted to date the teenage me haven't you?'
"Bobby I never wanted to date teenage boys when I was a teenager I certainly don't want to start now."
"Ooh Lindsay do tell! Older men?"
"Real men Bobby. I always wanted a real man."
"And?"
"And instead I'm stuck with you."
He digs his fingers into her ribs making her squeal. Everyone in the cinema shushes them. Bobby is quiet and well behaved again for all of two minutes. Then Lindsay hears "So that is a no on making out?"
"I didn't say that." She replies then looks at him. He is staring at her as if he's unsure what his next move is supposed to be. "Come here you idiot" she says and when he does she kisses him good and proper.
She begins to think maybe she shouldn't have encouraged him when his next question is, "Do you want to have sex?"
"Bobby!" she whispers shocked "We aren't even in the back row."
He laughs eyes wide "Does that mean if we were you would say yes?"
"No!" she laughs " No! Of course not! It means ... it means shut up and watch the movie."
He groans "Are you saying we actually have to watch this thing?"
"We could make out some more" she so helpfully suggests."Excellent idea" he decides and so they do.
From a distance a horrified Helen watches on. Horrified firstly that her best friend is so callously and enthusiastically cheating on her husband and secondly that she, District Attorney Helen Gamble, is stuck watching a Star Wars movie marathon with Ed Chambers. Damn Lindsay damn her to hell!
Towards the end of the first movie Bobby and Lindsay decide they've stayed well and truly long enough. They quietly leave the cinema Bobby's face conveniently hidden from Helen by it's sucker hold on Lindsay's neck and her palm conveniently cupping his cheek. Helen watched in disgust as her friend left, in no doubt as to the intentions of the couple who had barely come up for breath during the whole movie. Helen is fuming. She was waiting only for the intermission between movies before she grabbed Lindsay and dragged her home where she'd give her a piece of her mind. She rises to leave but Ed pulls her back down "You can't leave yet there is about 10 minutes to go. You have to see the end it's awesome." The whole cinema shushes them and Helen sits when she realizes she would have to push past 12 annoyed people to get out anyway so the chances of Lindsay still being outside when she does are fairly slim. She sits there getting angrier and angrier with Lindsay and tries to decide what her next move should be. How is she going to tell Bobby he was right all along?
Bobby and Lindsay get in her car. "I'll just drop you off at your dad's."
"I don't think so"
"I thought we agreed you would stay at your dad's."
"You agreed. I didn't. C'mon Lindsay that's taking it a bit too far there's no need for me to stay there. Besides after having your tongue down my throat for the last hour and a half, my father's is the last place I want to be."
"You're such a romantic Bobby" she moans.
"I'm just anticipating a little close encounters of the marital kind." He waggles his eyebrows at her suggestively.
Lindsay gives him an 'I can't believe you just said that look.'
Grinning he says "Ok yeah I know wrong movie but it's the same genre."
Lindsay looks him up and down and dryly says "I'm starting to believe those tight jeans are cutting off your circulation."
"Baby they weren't this tight when I put them on" he leers.
"Bobby!"
"C'mon Lindsay take me home." He gives her his best puppy dog look knowing she can never refuse that.
"What if Helen comes over and finds you at the apartment?" she feebly argues as she wants to take him home with her as much as he wants her to.
"Then I tell her I got to the airport and changed my mind. I decided to fly out in the morning instead because I wanted to give you a night to remember me by. I wanted to remind you what I stud I am and give you something to think about while I was away.""I suppose that could work" she laughs picturing Bobby making this argument to Helen.
"She won't come over anyway Lindsay. If she ever gets away from your pal Ed she's going to go home and plot revenge on you for tonight. You realize that right?"
Lindsay's not convinced "She can't see you at the apartment in the morning either."
"She won't!" he groans exasperated "And even if she does we just move on to plan B or C or D. Lindsay I've seen your notes you've planned for every possible scenario. I bet you've even planned for if an earthquake hits this weekend. We'll get by no matter what happens. Now take me home I may be walking around in someone else's clothes but I'm sleeping in my own bed."
"Ok." Lindsay reluctantly agrees. She starts the car, then smiling, whispers "Blizzard."
"Excuse me?"
"Not an earthquake a blizzard."Bobby looks at her incredulous."Well they reported a chance of snow" she explains. Seeing the expression on his face she warns, "Don't laugh at me Bobby!"
"I wouldn't dream of it," he says while laughing heartily.
"I'll take you to your father's" she threatens barely able to control her own giggles.
11 p.m. Bobby and Lindsay's apartment
Lindsay is in bed running through her plans for the following day. Bobby comes out of the bathroom ready for bed. Lindsay looks up and laughs. He's still wearing the wig. "Bobby get that thing off" she chuckles. He reaches for his waistband and starts to slowly shimmy his pajama pants down. Lindsay picks up a cushion and throws it at him. "The wig you idiot!"
Laughing he climbs up on the bed and looming over her says, "It's not coming off until I know for sure." He begins peppering kisses over her neck and shoulders.
"Know what for sure?"
"Whether it's true."
He's working his way up to her jaw-line. "Whether what's true?" She asks although she really isn't that concerned about the answer by this point.Looking into her eyes and lips teasingly close to her own "Whether blondes really do have more fun."
"Idiot!" she would have said to him if her tongue wasn't suddenly already more pleasantly occupied.
