STEELWORKERS IN NAPANEE REACH AGREEMENT WITH CANADIAN WASTE SYSTEMS

Napanee: The United Steelworkers of America, Local 343-06, representing workers at Canadian Waste Systems Napanee, have voted by an unprecedented margin to accept an agreement negotiated by the union with the company. In a vote held Monday evening, 100 % of the members voted to accept the agreement.

"Our members are extremely pleased and satisfied with the outcome of negotiations" Greg Brooks, unit chair of the local said, "We had a mandate to bargain no concessions and we accomplished that and much more"

The 3-year deal includes wage increases of 3%, retroactive to May 17, 2000, in each year, improvements in benefits, working conditions, seniority, and health & safety provisions. The agreement also included paid education leave for union members.

The Steelworkers Union has been seeking an agreement since early June and had a mandate from the members to accept no concessions from the company but rather a decent agreement in the face of expansion plans by the company. Those instructions would have put the members into a strike situation had company not reached an acceptable deal with the members.
