THE STORY

The Doctor and Ace arrive at a secret naval base on the coast of Northhumbria, near to the end of the Second World War. There, Dr Judson has built the Ultima Machine, a computer designed to break German cyphers. Base commander Millington, obsessed with Norse mythology, plots to let a Russian commando unit, led by Captain Sorin, steal the Ultima core, which he has booby-trapped with a deadly toxin, found in the area.

Meanwhile at the nearby Maiden's Point, evil is stirring beneath the waves, and the Russian soldiers are attacked by some unknown enemy. Judson uses the machine to translate Viking runes, which led to the release of Fenric, an ancient evil from the dawn of time whom the Doctor trapped seventeen centuries ago in a Chinese flask, after winning a game of chess. The flask was later stolen and buried by the Vikings who settled in the area.

The base is attacked by Haemovores, humans that have become vampiric monsters and have followed the flask on its journey. Fenric takes over first Judson's and then Sorin's body to challenge the Doctor to a game of chess, and Ace unwillingly helps Fenric win. The inhabitants of the base and the nearby village are killed by the Haemovores, who are in turn destroyed by the original Ancient One when their usefulness is at an end. Fenric plans to release the deadly poison, but the Doctor suceeds in turning the Ancient Haemovore against Fenric, and they are both destroyed by the toxin. Later the Doctor and Ace stand on the rocks at Maiden's point and they realise the evil has gone forever.
