Ushikata-yadokUshikata is a carrier on ox backl
Yado is an inn; therefore, Ushikata-yado was an inn for Ushikata carriers in Edo era. It was built under a Yosemune-style thatched- roof. It is 18m in width and 11m in length. It was built from late 17 th century to early 18 th century. It was rebuilt a few times afterwards but there was no major change. It has a large dirt floorDOMA and an entrance hall -a parlor- of Tatami room. If you stand in dirt floor, you can see a stable on your left and mezzanine on your uper right. Carriers slept in mezzanine in order to watch their ox or horse during night. This is the only one Ushikata-yado existing on Salt Road. You can get there by 10minute drive from Minami-Otari station.
Ushikata-yado opens at 9a.m and closes at 5p.m. Closed in winter. Admission fee; 200yen for an adult and 100yen for under 11years old.

Maeyama Hyakutai Kannon (Maeyama one-hundred goddess)

Those merciful figurers about 50cm high are standing along the Salt Road in Tsugaike area. During
the late Edo era a Kannon figure was made to wish travelers safe journey . They were dedicated one by one by different Otari people and placed along Salt Road independently. Later, they were gathered. In Japan there are three famous pilgrimage lands, each with a hundred sacred spots. They are in Bando district, Chichibu district and Saigoku district. They all have Kannon goddess figures and this Maeyama Hyakutai Kannon is called a compact pilgrimage land. It is understood that just by walking this Maeyama area you might have pilgrimage a hundred sacred places all at once. These Kannon who are goddesses of mercy have been watching a lot of travelers intently since old days.

Tsugaike Nature Park

Hakuba-oike Pond
In Tsugaike area there are recommendable trekking routs for mountain lovers. Usually most hikers take gondora lift and ropeay cable from Tsugaike Highland to Tsugaike Natural Park. It takes about 30 min.
and costs \1720 for one-way,\3000 for a round trip. From there to Hakuba-oike Pond, it is 2 hours and 30min, walk. Around the pond you can see a lot of pretty and beautiful alpine flowers blooming, and sometimes you will come across ptamigans the prefecture symbol birds of Nagano.
Furthermore you can find snow valley even in summer.
