Midir, Our Immortal Friend

by the Night Breed

The hallway was dark and the wind swept through it's broken wooden walls as I felt a cold stir in my soul. I was terrified but I made my way forward to the first and only door at the end of the hallway. There I was at my destination but for some reason I would have given anything not to be there right now. My attempt to knock on the door was altered by the silent breaking sound of the door opening by itself. "Oh, My god", I looked into the room startled. "Hello, is anyone in here?" I cautiously asked. I walked in slowly and noticed a very damp and musty smell in the air. There were no lights on but there was an illumination of the moon shining through the broken windows. I stood there just inside the door looking around the room taking in every bit of its macabre detail. There wasn't much furniture but a small table, sofa, and a standing mirror. They looked to be antiques. The room was eerie but also somewhat beautiful. I moved forward to investigate further. I noticed at a closer view an object on the table that didn't fit the atmosphere of the room, but was there nonetheless. "An answering machine?" How strange I thought as I mumbled to myself. "This doesn't make sense. Who would be calling this place". I was puzzled, but this wasn't my reason for being here. I'm looking for a guy who could help me further my research and investigation into the existance of vampires. He's rumored to be a real vampire and not some kid playing dress up. His address and name were given to me by the Astro Vamps and this guy was a personal friend of theirs which makes this even more of an interesting pilgrimage. All the woos in the place was painted black. There were green tattered cloths hanging from every corner of the room and large green candles in every entryway from the two doors to the three small windows. One door was shut and covered by rune symbols, from which I could make no sense. But one thing is for sure. Symbols on a door that resemble any kind of witchcraft symbolism usually means keep out or be cursed and I wasn't about to enter the room. This vampire character, named Midir, that I was about to meet was definitely in possession of mystical knowledge and from what I saw so far, it pointed toward the Celtic magic. Reasons for this presumption were because of the runes and the color green. There was no other color in the whole room except black and green, and green was the sacred color of the Celts. Well, since I had no intention of entering the room or leaving the apartment just yet, I had no choice but just to sit and wait. I hadn't announced my visit prior to coming here, but something told me that my verbal invite had no standing in this scenario. "Midir knew*I'm sure he knew", I said gazing out the window. Time was creeping by slowly and it was well past the witching hour and there was no sign of Midir or any indications that he was even going to make an appearance. "Where is he? I can't wait here too much longer", I said to myself. By now my mind was wandering and I was getting very tired. I felt like going to sleep but forced myself to stay awake. I reached into my pocket to pull out the paper that Daniel wrote wrote for me. It read "Midir, our Immortal Friend, 307 Kings Drive. Don't stay after twelve o'clock" Signed Daniel. I completely forgot that I wasn't to be here after twelve o'clock and remembered after glancing at the note again. Engulfed by fear I looked at my watch to catch the time. "2:00 a.m.!" I said as my pulse raced. I didn't know what was going to happen and neither Daniel nor Eyajo told me why I was to be gone by twelve o'clock. Now realizing it was two hours past twelve. Nothing had happened and I felt pretty confident that nothing was going to happen. I began to walk toward the door when suddenly the ghostly silence of the room was shattered by the answering machine rewinding, stopping and playing it's ghastly message. "Midir, lese-Majeste! Lese-Majeste!" the voice screamed into the answering machine. I have to admit this voice sent chills down my spine but I didn't understand the words. I went over the machine to rewind the message. All my passion for the undead and the supernatural didn't prepare me for the fear I felt when I looked down at the floor. There, lying on the ground, which completely horrified my rational thought, was the plug and a cut phone wire. I instantly grabbed the machine and opened the bottom. "No batteries!" Just as I slammed the machine back down on the table I heard the closed door behind me rub against it's frame as someone or something on the other side started to open it. "Midir? Midir? Is that you?!" I whispered. ...To be continued...
