The social structure of wolves is based on dominance. Wolves dominate or submit based on their ranking within the pack. Usually older wolves are dominant and younger wolves more submissive. The pack is led by the dominant male and female wolves called alphas. This social structure maintains the order of the pack.

Wolves usually mate in late winter or spring. Many mate for life, although if one is killed, they will select a new mate. Alpha males and females form a social bond that is usually only broken by death or displacement. They hunt, travel, and socialize together.

Both male and female wolves are loving parents. All members of the pack take care of the pups. Male and females secrete a hormone called prolactin which stimulates nurturing behavior.

Pup mortality is high. Only the strongest survive.
