Editorial: Other Tales of Terror
The tavern owner had grown up in the greatest of fates. His parents' Inn had known the finest spoils of war innocents could hope for...their place was at the crossroads of many a smaller town, used extensively by Union Knights to avoid the more used (and spied upon) major thoroughfares.
The Knights were a joy to have as guests. Always paying in gold or readily usable materials, they were a boon to the meager business. Many slept by day, leaving the Inn open to its small clientele of regular visitors and the ocassional passing stranger. The Knights always posted their own gaurd but the proprietors could say no thefts or vandalisms occurred when Knights were in thier company.
But, as they say, 'all good things must come to an end.' As the then Tavern owners aged so did the life of the war. As the tides of war changed and the enemy was pushed farther north so went their business. With no Knights as gaurds much mischief became the Tavern, its owners and family. They were at the mercy of each guest who wished to take advantage of their plight, often accepting barters for room and board which barely covered their expenses.
By the war's end the aging Tavern keepers had turned over the running of the Inn to their eldest son and his wife. The man did this partly in honor of his parents, partly because it was the only life he'd ever known. His brothers and sisters had long since moved on as had his sons and daughters save his youngest girl, now a full grown lovely maid, who worked as hard as the rest of the family and even harder at enduring the insults and advances of their ruder guests.
This was worsened by the fact the law of the land now proclaimed even the evil may reside in Union. Far from the Keeps of the remaining Knights, these had free reign to near any crimes short of murder throughout the countryside.
Now the new Tavern Keeper was by all accounts a good man but desperate times brings many to desperate acts. His heart ached over the poverty his parents, wife and dear daughter had to face every day. He tired of the gruel each had to eat while smelling the sumptuous feasts his wife prepared for patrons, hoping each time some few morsels would be left over for his family. He fought back rage at the way his baby girl was treated by strangers unworthy even to speak to her.
So he formed a desperate plan. Gathering his wife and daughter one day when none were in the Inn, he told them the next traveller who happened by who appeared to be wealthy they would put into a room with a faulty lock and, when they were sure he was asleep, they would kill him. The women argued vehemently against these actions...surely the anger of the gods would befall them should they do such a thing! Still, with a resolve greater than the ladies had seen in him before, he soon convinced them this might be their only means of survival.
It wasn't long until his plan was to be put into action.
Strange so far? Maybe you've heard this old folk story, maybe the remainder of my editorial will give it away. Still, this is one of the best allusions to this week's editorial topic there could be.
We've come a long way as a nation, meaning the United States. The 'land of the free' originally was also a home of slaves. We took what we wanted from the original 'owners' of this land, the American Indians, nearly destroyed them and forced the remainder into treaties we have only begun to fulfill.
Our great 'melting pot' has seen a great deal of suspicion on every new wave of immigrants upon our shores. Though this is to be expected to a degree our old law books abound in very unfair edicts pointing at a particular racial class, sexual orientation or the feminine gender. Even as recently as World War II we herded Japanese and others of Asian descent into internment centers which were near our own versions of concentration camps.
While these forms of bias are dwindling in our government they are still reaching tragic proportions among our people, now particularly in hate crimes against anyone who appears to be of Mid-East descent or of the Islamic religion. Pakistani school girls getting beat up by adults. Hindu businesses being vandalized. All types of crimes against even those who claim ties to our new allies!
Union will support none of this and will actively seek the aprehension of any who commit such vile acts. You will also see in many of our websites links to
There you may learn of the hate crimes against all races, creeds, colors, etc AND learn what you can do about it when you see it happening. For any wanting to know the Union stance on this its as simple as reading our Declaration of Universal Entity. In Union, 'harm none and otherwise live free'...Union will in no way support or condone any of these actions!
Lady Tatanka must take credit for the VAST majority of our site updates this week, so much so I must give her a seperate article! In addition to her new realm of Penny's Thoughts, she has worked VERY hard while I've been away, on new projects as well as her 'stately duties'! GREAT WORK, LOVE!!!) with its own gaming forums of Diablo, the EoEE FF/BBRPG Group, and the existing goth/vamp/alternative galleries and BBRPG club The Palace of Pleasure and Pain. Any interested please drop in particularly if you intend to be active: we are looking for leaders there who may find REAL employment with Union someday soon!
I wouldn't normally repeat game reviews so quickly but, seeing we will be meeting in Diablo two weeks from yesterday I wanted to give it another shot this issue. The game is GREAT folks! For a one time price of $10 (and now available in our Sponsors and Shops from our newest addition Best Buy...I still beam with pride at the mention of them!) you'll be able to play online forever!
Rated mature for gore, the game is graphically bloody. (A plus for me! teehee!) While only supporting eight players per game, any who have played Ultima will be familiar with the interface and, while without all the perks of Ultima, offers an opportunity for some early encounters with PK's!
Yes, player killers are allowed in Diablo but this will provide a great training ground for our excursions into more MMRPG's in the future. We will meet in public rooms for the very purpose of enticing PK's among us, just so we might practice our tactics against them!
For those so enclined spars 'to the death' are sanctioned there following the guidelines set forth in Union Law. To save you from looking it up, simply put just make sure your 'spar partner' agrees to such a battle before you pounce on him! These combats are encouraged in Union amoung Knights and all members who MMRP to gain level and fighting prowess.
In both single and on-line games you'll have hours...DAYS of fun with Diablo! Get a copy and join us there!
So, do you want to hear my personal feelings on suspicions and hate crimes? Since you can't say 'no' ('Monty, PLEASE give us a break!!!', etc, etc!!!) here they are: I'm unbiased. Equally suspicious of everyone. Folks of my mindset seem to live longer. Yes, I cast a wary eye on anyone who looks different than me, but no moreso than those who do I do not know. I am suspicious of Mid-East Americans who becry their fate at the hands of their countrymen while not saying they have even bothered to pray for the terrorist victims. But then I am suspicious of 'our own' religious right who proclaim we deserved this because we allow homosexuals and pagans in our country. Both represent a religious right, which I consider a contradiction of terms!
Regardless of color or creed, there are too many people out there who will kill you for some fanatical cause which makes perfectly good sense...at least to them.
One eve shortly after a lone man appeared with not one but two stout horses, one he rode and the other carrying a wagon heavily laden with fine furniture and other costly gear.
He entered the Inn in rich garb, ordered their finest meal, asked for their best room, paid well over the prices asked of each and was more than a perfect gentleman in all respects.
Still, the Tavern Keeper would not sway from his sinister plan. The man was an easy mark. Clearly terribly tired from a long journey he finished his meal, went to his room and soon heavy snores could be heard from behind the poorly locked door.
On hearing this the man gathered his wife and daughter, easily gained entrance to his guest's room and then the three proceeded to stab the man to death with large kitchen knives. The Keeper thought it strange the man's only defense was to try to cover himself from their blows and say 'wait, you don't understand!'
After the deed was done the family began sifting through the dead man's personal belongings. Among fine clothing, costly jewelry and much gold was found a single scroll. The Keeper pulled it open and began to read...
"...for your unswerving loyalty to the new state of our Union I grant you leave of your current duties to take charge of the town we have agreed upon. I further grant you the contingency of Knights aforementioned who will appear, as you have asked, in the night so as to fulfill your request these events be a surprise to the people there..."
The first signature was that of Lord Montahon.
The second was of his brother who had left those many years before.

The Lands of Lady Tatanka
Our dear Lady of the Land has come through again, is many, many ways this week!
She created her own realm of Penny's Thoughts, temporarily taken over the developments at The Empires of EverEve and even has found time to add her personal galleries to her Palace and the Tavern.
The costumes she has worn for her photos are largely of her own design, either by creating them herself as the green peasant dress or piecing them together. Just goes to show what a little ingenuity can do! The genie costume was compliments of Union Council and purchased at BuyCostumes. Needless to say we are very pleased with the returns on our investment thus far!
Another given is you can count on our Lady for many things, including becoming Union's first paid internet Associate! While no date has yet been set it is certain she will be offered an IRL position in Union...she has made possible many of the developments you see in each week's Gate and is always a source of inspiration to us all! Words can not express our gratitude, Penny!!!

in The Empires of EverEve and overseeing the recruitment and training of incoming members there. Other requirements include:
* Webdesign and hosting skills
Warlord/Lord of Alhanzar: Command Council position available to Knights or members interested in building and administrating the Union Keep
of the Mystic Realms of Alhanzar and overseeing the recruitment and training of incoming members there. Other requirements include:
* A minimum level one membership to Alhanzar
Warlord/Lord of Diablo: Command Council position available to Knights or members interested in administrating Union activities

Both Mike's Character Generator and CharGen 2.0 are from cnet.com (so you know they're good!), small, powerful and, as usual, free!
While designed for D&D they may be used for many other applications, including our NoU FF/BBRPG, where you have no need of the stats generator in each. For whatever purposes you use them for they are both fast, fun and did I say free?
