One of County's Oldest Men, Passes This Morning SAMUEL COBB, one of Lawrence County's oldest residents died today at 5 a.m. at the home of his son, Jesse Cobb, in Oolitic. Mr. Cobb had been critically ill for the past four weeks suffering from the infirmities of advanced years. Funeral rites have been set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Oolitic Pentecostal Mission, with the Rev. Henry Skinner and the Rev. Fred Smithers in charge. Interment will take place in Beech Grove Cemetery. The remains were cared for at the Day, Carier and Roach Funeral Home, and were returned late today to the Jesse Cobb residence to lie in state - until the funeral hour. The deceased lacked only a few days of having attainted 96 years. He was born on May 26, 1843, in Knox County, Kentucky, to John and Lurania Phipps Cobb, and was married in early life to Amanda Jane Hubbard, who died in 1869. In 1869, he married Louise Byrley, who also preceded him in death. The surviving relatives are one son, Nathan, born of the first marriage, who lives at McComb, Okla; eight children born of the second marriage, Mrs. Amelia Keys, Iakland, Calif., Mrs. Edith Herman and Hannah Cobb, Chandler, Ariz., James of Pierson, Okla., Samuel of Sullivan, Rad of Sullivan, Marshall of Dogger, Jesse of Oolitic; 98 grandchildren; 122 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren. Mr. Cobb was a member of the Penetecost Church. |
