is excerpts and paraphrases from FAMILY STORIES as told by John and Liz's oldest daughter, Mary Jane (Cobb) Womack (when she was 86 years old), to her niece, Glenda Sue (Harmon) Scully. Glenda Sue put the stories in writing, then generously shared copies of her transcripts with family members. |
where the family remained for a time. John's brother, Nathan Cobb, sent word of good crops in Oklahoma, and a large group of Cobb families (6 or 8 families, including John's and Liz's) chartered a train and went to an area about eight miles southwest of Tribbey, Cleveland Co, OK. John's family stayed on at "Nay's" place for a time until John rented land. He then bought a school tent for the family to live in, which they did move into. They stayed in Oklahoma one year. During that year, they were all sick with "chills," and other illnesses. John moved his ailing family back to Kentucky to the same area they had lived before. He cut logs and built their home. Their illnesses lingered on. Some had Scarlet Fever and "Dropsy." Their fifth child was born during the time they were back in Kentucky. John planted a corn crop that year and when it was hard enough to grist, he sold it, put his family back on the train, and took them back to Oklahoma, to the same area they'd left from just a year earlier. Oklahoma was now "home" and John would never go back to Kentucky. They went on to have four more children, all born in Oklahoma. |

Sentinel Echo News, London, Kentucky March 18, 1954 ~~~ FIRE DESTROYS COBB HOME AT GIBBS The home of Chester Cobb and his sister, Daisy Cobb was completely destroyed by fire early Sunday morning, Feb. 28, at Gibbs. The blaze was thought to have started from lightening during a thunder shower at the time. Although neighbors arrived soon after the blaze started, their attempts to extinguish the flames were futile. The Cobbs were barely able to escape with the clothes they were wearing. Everything, except Chester's bicycle which was on the front porch, ws consumed. Chester cobb, a correspondent to The Sentinel-Echo for the last two years, plans to reside with a brother in Hamilton until a new home can be obtained. His sister will live with neighbors. Jeff Jones, a neighbor, has started a drive to obtain funds to help build and furnish another house. Gibbs is in Knox County near the Laurel County line. |
