in years of: 1807, 1811, 1813, 1818, 1819 and 1822. His father-in-law, George Alcorn, lived in this area, on the old Indian War Path, then called Bale's Trace, on Sturgeon's Creek. This area was in Madison Co, KY, before Clay became a county in 1807. Both George Alcorn and Ambrose Cobb are listed as one of the first families to live in this area. There was a Cobb in the War of 1812 from this area, which of course, could be Ambrose. There was also an Abel Cobb in this area, b:1814 NC, who might have been the son of Ambrose (unconfirmed, more research is needed about Abel Cobb). Ambrose was missing from KY tax lists between 1813 and 1818, the same period of time when his grandmother died in NC. His first known child was Elizabeth "Betsy" Cobb, b: Abt 1804, who married Radford Richardson, on 12 Aug 1822, in Clay Co, KY. The will of Ambrose's grandfather, also named Ambrose Cobb, was not settled until after the death of his wife, which appears to be around 1815, after which young Ambrose filed two documents for the lawful heirs of Ventner Cobb's share, one in Knox Co, KY, in 1815; one in Clay Co, KY, in 1818 To view transcripts of the documents, Click here for 1815/Knox Co ~ Click here for 1818/Clay Co (Use your browser's "BACK" button to return to here) Ambrose was given a land grant of 50 acres in Clay Co, KY, on Sturgeon Creek, on 06 Sep 1821, Warrant #5062, issued by Joseph Desha, Governor of the Commonwealth of KY. It appears they followed the Alcorn family and went to Indiana. |
