worked with the Oregon State University Agricultural Service in Wasco, Umatilla, Lake, Deschutes and Wallowa counties from 1941 until his retirement in 1967. Following his retirement, he and his wife spent several years in Kenya and Iran developing agricultural extension programs and training native personnel under the auspices of Near East Foundation and United Nations. In 1975 they moved to New York City where Elgin administered overseas programs for Near East Foundation. In 1978 they returned to Africa for a tour in Lesotho before retiring in Hood River, Oregon. |
Sentinel Echo London, Kentucky June 13, 1985 ~~~~~ TRACES OF LAUREL Roscoe Conklin Green was born January 1, 1859 at Skate, Kentucky (Laurel County), the son of Leonard Lynn Green (Born June 28, 1859) and Elizabeth Ann Johnson (Born February 11, 1865). His grandfather, William H. Green, served in the Civil War, Co. K. KY Infantry; great grandfather, Lewis Green, Jr., in the Revolutionary War; great-great-great grandfather, Lewis Green, served in the French and Indian and in the Revolutionary War. In the Revolutionary War, Lewis Green served with at least three sons, Zechariah, James and Lewis Jr.. Roscoe Conklin Green served with the American Expeditionary Force in France and Germany, in WWI. In the Battle of Belleau he was wounded by shrapnel. Roscoe's son, Gerald S. Green, served in the Korean War. Every generation of this direct line has fought in every American War since 1755, except one. Roscoe Conklin Green had these brothers and sisters: Otto, Clora Parker Sharpless; William H.; Nannie Gilbert; Elizabeth Barnett; Katherine Kilbourne; Ollie Douglas; Leighton; Leonard, Jr.; and Lula Kilbourne. Roscoe attended school at Wyan. He worked in timber and construction contracts with his father in Laurel County and was employed by Black Star Coal Company, Harlan County, as a timber agent. He was a magistrate of Harlan County for twenty years and a Mason. He attends Hart Baptist Church. Besides the Hart community of Laurel County, where he now lives, Roscoe Conklin Green has lived at Alva, Kentucky, in Harlan County, and in Germany during his military service. |
