BOUNTY HUNTER? The following story was told to the grandchildren of General Jack Smith (Pig's uncle), by General's step-son, Evlan Bright. The story is said to be a true story per any number of family relations. |
![]() ~ written by George Smith Evie told wonderful stories of growing up in Fount, Knox Co, Kentucky. His coffee-stained upper lip held a cigarette, his eyes filled with excitement as he would slowly articulate the story of Cousin Pig Smith. Pig had seen a man on the railroad tracks that looked to him like the famous criminal, "Pretty Boy Floyd." Pig, thinking that there must be a reward for ridding the earth of this scrounge, shot and killed "Pretty Boy," and was right proud of himself. That is, until they found out it was a case of mistaken identity. Apparently someone brought the body in for all to see, and the poor fellow was indeed NOT... Pretty Boy Floyd! No one ever did say who he was, but the excitement of seeing the body of a man that they thought was a famous gangster, brought firey enthusiasm to Evie's tired old voice, so many years later. "Pig" was Uncle John-D's boy. His real name was Loyd Smith. ~ George Smith is grandson of General &Laura(Swafford)Smith. Above photo is a depiction, is not actually the famous gangster. |
Per Pig's 1st cousin, Archie Smith: "Loyd was supposed to get 21 years for killing the man, however, a man by the name of Doc Rowland, got him off." Archie and Pierce Smith are sons of Floyd &Rose(Gibson)Smith. The brother of Pierce's wife [Lucy (Rowland) Smith} is Doc Rowland. Doc Rowland was some kind of Law Man. |
