About my Grandpa Henry

The family stories are that he left Kentucky to escape threats on
his life as the result of a murder trial in which he testified for
the prosecution. He told me about his adventures running a still
with his father-in-law in Indiana in Brown County. It was the
terrible time of the depression and they were nearly starving
working as share croppers. The still helped them survive. Grandpa
told me about one of his favorite customers, a gentleman from the
"city" who came to visit his cousin on the next ridge. He came
over and purchased moonshine, visited with the family and were well
liked by my grandparents. Grandpa told me that the gentleman would
at times have supper or a cup of coffee with them. He was fond of
their daughter (my mother) Kathleen who was very small for her age,
he bounced her on his knee and played with her. Until the day she
died, my mother would become very irritated with me when I reminded
her that she was a "Dillinger Babe," for the "gentleman" was

John Dillinger!
And while every lawman in the nation was looking for him,
he and my mother were playing in the kitchen!

About my Granduncle Mitchell

The photograph of my granduncle Mitchell Taylor came down to me from my
grandmother Minnie (Taylor) Cheek. She always had a large copy of this
hanging near the stairwell and told us that he had died as a child.
The story I recall from Grandma was that he fell from a barn loft, but
also I heard he had alcohol poisoning after sneaking into the moonshine
(maybe that is why he fell out of the barn loft).

straight to Big Richland and married Sarah Taylor instead!
