The first of two nights with Lowen & Navarro, and the first-ever Wednesday night performance for Meeting Grace, came on in a hurry.
Rushing over to the house straight from the KPBS radio studio where Lowen & Navarro had just appeared as guests on The Lounge, the duo quickly set up, tuned, ate and chatted & visited with guests who also were getting settled in and ready for the show. Shortly after the scheduled 8:30 pm start time, Lowen & Navarro played the first chords and instantly had the audience hooked.
The prolific duo drew from theri full repertoire and sang tunes such as "Looks Like Sunshine, Feels Like Rain" and "What I Make Myself Believe" which Dan Navarro confessed was written for his cousin, Dave Navarro, a well-known guitarist who has been a member of Jane's Addiction and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Dan and Eric invited their friend, Jeff Berkley, up to join them on several songs including "Writing on the Wall," "Just to See You" and "Gold Mine." That last song, "Gold Mine," is the only song that Lowen & Navarro did not write that still ended up on one of their albums. The song was in fact written by Joel Rafael, in whose band Berkley is the percussionist. Isn't it wonderful how connected these musicians are and how they receive inspiration from each other?!?
The first set of the evening came to a finish with the popular "Walking on a Wire" and "Broken Moon." After a short break, the talented twosome continued on with a wide range of songs and again had Berkley join them on songs. Some of the highlights included "The Flesh is Weak" and "Pendulum."
Rousing applause brought the guys back for a wonderful
encore of their well-known, "We Belong" in which they threw in parts
of the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want." It
was a wonderful way to spend a Wednesday evening and though the evening's
events started somewhat later than usual, it was time well-spent.
